Hi, Stage 32 Community!

My name is Gareth Taylor and I’m a Stage 32 Thought Leader and filmmaker with over 15 years in the industry. My career thus far has mainly focused on cinematography, while my storytelling roots lie in screenwriting and directing. My work includes a vast number of films, documentaries, commercials, branded content, music videos, TV and corporate videos.

The entertainment business is a tough place to work and grow in. The competition is fierce and it’s often difficult to figure out how to meet the right people and get work. Experience and talent aren’t enough for 99% of us. An important skill anyone must develop is that of networking.

Today I am speaking with my friend Alicia Robbins. She is an accomplished cinematographer with 20 years of experience. She worked on Grey’s Anatomy and has recently lensed episodes of the popular TV shows Bridgerton and Quantum Leap. In this video we discuss the importance of networking, or as Alicia prefers to call it: socializing. This is an important distinction. The term networking tends to put unnecessary pressure, whereas if we go to an event with the intent to meet people and see friends, it eases the process.

*Please keep in mind that we recorded this video just before the strikes came to a conclusion.

Cinematography Networking Tips

There are many different ways to connect with industry professionals, whether in person or virtually through social networks and online platforms, like what we have here at Stage 32! I hope that my conversation with Alicia has provided you with some new ideas to try for yourself!
