First up, in this video essay by Frame Voyager, he’s taking a closer look at the unique production behind the 2014 Academy Award-Winning film, Whiplash. The semi-autobiographical drama inspired by director Damien Chazelle's personal experiences as a jazz drummer, was a difficult undertaking. Whiplash was initially Chazelle’s attempt at writing a small and focused film. It struggled to attract interest before he completed production on a short-film version. Only after the short film won the Jury Prize at Sundance, was Chazelle able to attract financing to produce a feature-length version and attach his first choice actor- Miles Teller. It was Chazelle’s feature directorial debut and he needed the recognition of the short film’s win, the talent of J.K. Simmons and Miles Teller, financing from a reputable company, and a powerhouse crew to pull it all together. Each element of the film from the tight and well-written script to the people behind each part of the final production had to succeed during their rapid 19-day shoot for Whiplash to even make it onto the screen.
This is a great example of my, “And What” philosophy to screenwriting and attracting interest for your screenplays. Every little “And what?” that you can add to your project makes it more attractive to producers, managers, talent, financiers, everybody! Learn more in this video!
