Happy Sunday, Creative Army!
Have you had a creative weekend so far? Whether you’ve been writing, filming, editing, or just taking time to dream up your next big idea, I’ve got some fresh inspiration to keep that fire lit. So grab your coffee, and let’s dive in.
First up, let’s talk about the start of something great. I’ve always believed the first few moments of any project are crucial. You’ve got one shot to hook your audience, and how you deliver that opening can make all the difference.
That’s why I had to share this stellar video essay from Just One More Thing. It breaks down the opening sequence of DAVID FINCHER’s Fight Club, which in my opinion, is one of the most masterful intros in cinema history. From the pacing and visuals to the way exposition is seamlessly layered in, Fincher throws you right into the mind of the Narrator- chaotic, paranoid, disillusioned- and doesn’t let go. It’s a great reminder of how important craft is, especially in the first five pages or first five minutes of your script or film. So, if you’re looking for a masterclass in how to start strong, this one’s for you.
Now, let’s shift gears and talk career strategy. I know this industry can feel like a grind. Rejection is part of the deal. Waiting is part of the deal. But the second you embrace the idea that this is a long game, it all gets a little easier. You can’t get to mile marker one unless you take the first step. And that step might not feel flashy or even fun. But it’s forward motion. If you’re expecting this journey to be fast or easy, you’re going to burn out. This business is built on consistency, resilience, and choosing to stay positive even when you’re not seeing immediate results.
So here’s the truth, if you stay in the game, do the work, and surround yourself with the right people (which, hey, Stage 32 is a great place to do that), things will happen. Learn more in this video.
Now I want to hear from you—what’s one opening scene that absolutely hooked you? Maybe it’s a favorite movie, or maybe it’s a pilot that inspired your own writing. Drop it in the comments. I love hearing what lights you up creatively.
