As a film composer, it isn't hard to recognize that one of the hardest parts in creating a film or video project is finding or creating the right music. When I see filmmakers who don’t have access to a composer sifting through stock music lists, something always ends up getting comprised — whether it’s time, creative control, budget, etc.
I love working with filmmakers, especially when the music is an artistic pillar of their project -- when the process of creation and collaboration that goes into making the music matter. But as more of my colleagues create projects where music serves a more functional role (and less of an artistic one), we joke about poor quality and missed musical opportunities in the film quality. And then there’s the stock music workflow — late nights searching through endless lists for a track, only to find one that "kind of" works and then realize the required license is $1,000 above budget when the website says "royalty-free”. Well, that doesn’t mean you’re “free" from additional financial obligations. Here’s another instance — you find workable track that gets critiqued in the first client preview, but because can’t dive in and tweak the music file, you have to start this process from scratch. Yeah, so my friends don't love stock.
For almost three years, my team (including fellow Stage 32ers Samuel Estes, Michael Hobe and Matt Kabus) I have been working with filmmakers and music technologists to put our blood, sweat, and tears into building a music technology to break this race to the bottom. We birthed a filmmaker’s personal Artificial Intelligence music composer, Amper. Without needing music experience, you can collaborate with Amper to create the perfect soundtrack for your work/project/films. And yes, it’s royalty-free, always unique, and comes with a global, perpetual-use license.
Throughout our journey, we’ve been building this technology specifically for filmmakers and fellow creatives in the Stage 32 community.
And so finally, we launch. And we are excited to take Stage 32 filmmakers on the journey with us.
We’re revealing Amper at the New York Media Festival next week on Sept. 27th and will be giving 15 Stage 32 filmmakers a chance to have their film featured at this premiere and celebrated by Stage 32 and Amper via Twitter and Facebook.
If selected, your video will be seen by industry executives and professional content creators attending the festival. With Amper, attendees will have an opportunity to create a unique soundtrack tailored to your video. Along with your original film, two Hollywood composers and I will select your video's top soundtracks from each day and post on Twitter and Facebook.
Finalists will also receive a VIP invitation to Amper's private launch party to join industry leaders and fellow creatives over drinks and hors d’oeuvres on top of NYC.
To be considered:
1 - Please upload an mp4 or m4v video file on your Stage 32 profile that is between 15 and 60 seconds in length and let us know about it in the comments section below. DEADLINE IS SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 25.
2 - Please remove the soundtrack from your video but leave in dialogue and/or sound effect.
3 - We also encourage you to include your bio and social media links to be published on social media along with your film.
We are excited to share this opportunity with our fellow Stage 32 filmmakers. Join us for the launch of this incredible tool that will help all of us creatives in the industry!
