John Emerson (Fredrick Eaton) of the Los Angeles Water and Power District immediately targets her homestead for its water and lake.  Sophie has no intention of selling her water or her property but Emerson is ruthless and uses the murder of the horse thief of discredit her in an attempt to steal her land.
