On the verge of destitution an Victorian apprentice photographer reluctantly agrees to work for a charlatan in faking spirit photographs; but when ghostly images appear on the untouched plates of young women who are murdered within days of having their photographs taken this not only threatens his scientific outlook on life but makes make him the prime murder suspect.
