How Do You Deal With Your Anxiety As An Actor?

We all feel it. The nerves. The doubt. The anxiety.

But Stage 32’s fearless leader, RB Botto (@rbwalksintoabar), has a simple truth that just might change the way you move forward:

The more you do, the less you worry.

Every audition, every pitch, every rewrite puts you in a position to win—and builds the confidence to keep going.

Missed an opportunity? That’s okay. There’s another one around the corner.

Watch this video and keep moving.

What part of the creative journey triggers your anxiety the most? Let’s talk about it in the comments.

Ashley Renee Smith I like what RB says. It reminds me of the concept of neuroplasticity: that the more we do something the more we strengthen the neural pathway (for example of putting ourselves out there) and the easier it becomes to do. So each time it feels awkward or uncomfortable we can remind ourselves of that fact. That even if we didn't 'win ' we are strengthening the neural pathway that puts us in a position to 'win' one day.

Totally agree on this. In this case it is a not too difficult to restructure the brain, bad habits, often learned in childhood, and practised your whole life, can be 'unlearned,' and replaced by good, positive habits. Abd Believe it or not. The distructive behavior can be replaced by 'BUILDING' behavior in a few months; but only if you practice every day and, when you catch yourself on a 'negative' thought, out loud tell yourself 'WHY IT IS,' and what you 'SHOULD' think. Not only bumb think out loud, also people who want to 'grow'. (And about the bums, they don't speak out loud because they lost their mind, it's the opposite; they do it because they do not want to 'loose' their mind - a clever unconsciously created coping meganism)

Furthermore, work on several projects at 'the same time, ' but only with utter focus on one.

When you're temporary stuck on that project, you start to work on an other; this way you never get the time to worry; switch, switch, switch, always keep your mind busy. When you start to feel overworked, go on a 2 week holiday and come back vitalized, ready for new insights concerning your projects. At least, that's what works for me.

Rutger Oosterhoff 2 I like what you say, i think i'm at the 'go on a two week holiday' stage :) There is a lot to be said for the 'fertile void'
