Upcoming Webinar with the writer of the StudioCanal film BAGHEAD! How to Avoid Tropes When Writing Your Horror Film

This webinar will be hosted by Christina Pamies, writer of the StudioCanal film BAGHEAD!

One of the most important elements of any horror movie is the ability to shock and surprise. When an audience can predict what happens next, a scare loses its power. When a protagonist starts acting like a “character in a horror film,” the audience loses interest in their journey. Originality is a bonus when you’re writing in any genre of film, but in horror, it’s essential to the film’s success.

Tropes aren’t necessarily bad. They sometimes offer a comforting familiarity to our stories. As writers, we can be lulled by this appeal to our comfort zones. But we need to remember that people don’t go to horror movies to be comforted! In this genre, audiences want the opposite. It’s our job to reject what is most comfortable and familiar to us and find new ways to tell our story, all while keeping the things we love. This is what will make your horror movie feel relevant and fresh in a marketplace full of competing stories.
