Why are academic qualifications cited by writers? They are not necessary for creative writing. I just saw a 4-year old play Mozart's concerto on a piano!

And now AI (artificial intelligence). Why do we need artificial intelligence when we have unlimited volumes of natural intelligence and creativity?

Is this a "monkey see monkey do" phenomenon?

Willem Elzenga

Its interesting to know if somebody has spend years studying and has gained certain knowledge, its not necessary to name it but can help presenting yourself to a producer and or director.

AI will do the jobs mankind is not interested in doing, jobs that still need some form of 'intelligence'. Basically its automation.

And yes, as with so many things that are trending its often a monkey see monkey do phenomenon. Too bad.

Ravi Sadana Hi Ravi, screenwriting qualifications aren’t necessary. Live, learn, write. Qualifications may help with the process and the management of such things as formatting and the process of writing, but why waste years and dollars on a qualification that gives you no guarantee of success.

As for AI and screenwriting. My imagination is so vast(!) that it would take it years to catch up to where I was and then I’d have already moved on from there. So more catching up for AI to do!

Hi Ravi Sadana - Managers/Producers, I think, like to see academics for a couple reasons: sometimes it may be relevant to genre, theme, etc... and they may also see it as a sign of finishing what you start, teamwork, and creativeness.

As far as AI - a HUGE RASBERRY (sound effects to come) ;-) Cheers

"Why do we need artificial intelligence when we have unlimited volumes of natural intelligence and creativity?" Artists don't need AI. Using AI to write loglines, synopses, scripts, etc. is a shortcut. Artists should do the work themselves. And yeah, it's a monkey see, monkey do phenomenon. AI will never be as creative and emotional as humans.

As a writer, I don't think degrees matter all that much, but the training, confidence, and experience received in academia studying writing can definitely make one much less insecure starting out and allow you to get into interesting places more easily via an academic-curated network of peers.
