I just got news this morning that my #1 choice for the lead in the feature film I am producing passed. I've gotten a million passes in my life, but this one stung (guess that thick skin of mine can be pierced, and that's okay, I'm human). I took 5 minutes, poured a cup of tea, looked at the ocean and by the time I got back to my computer my producing partner had already emailed me and our talented writer with a radical suggestion. I had been so focused on putting good juju into the universe for #1 that I didn't even think to come up with a unique idea like #2. The writer instantly jumped on the idea and had thoughts on how scenes could change for this new actor. I absolutely love #2 as an actor and am thrilled with the possibility. His production company is looking for material so we pitched it and they want to read and we sent it over.
I stay motivated because I've put people around me who won't let me stay down for too long and who are awesome, creative collaborators. So, I'm sending new juju to the universe for #2!
I want to hear how you stay motivated as a producer...
(Let me be clear - I want to use this post to lift each other up. There are more obstacles than we've had to experience in the past but perseverance and tenacity win the day.)

I really have to believe in the quality of the IP and the financial success of the movie. Also working together is very important to stay motivated, you can share good news and help out whenever needed. I constantly undertake activties that keep the spirit up. But sometimes it can also be good to focus on something completely different, a hobby, sport or alternate job.

I've been there Amanda. Many times. It hurts and it's not easy to brush off all of the time. But you're a badass for handling it the way that you did and for sharing it so honestly with the community here. =)

It's always so cool to hear who "passed" when a movie is such a success. And once it's made with #2, you realize you couldn't think of any other way it should have been. It's not always easy to stay motivated but I keep getting reminded to keep going whether by a friend of colleague.

It is such a great question, Amanda Toney. Here's my approach... While there are so many transactional moments in business I try to approach producing in an "accomplishment" mindset. If I focus too much on any one transaction - like an attachment or specific financier - I can look down at the road instead of up at the mountain we're climbing. Producing takes time - a perfect balance of patience and aggression - and when the accomplishment happens, it is worth it even if some transactions along the way fizzle Eyes on the prize has always been my motto. I have zero doubt you will accomplish this film.
