How to Navigate the Cannes Film Festival Marche du Film

The Cannes Film Festival can be overwhelming when you plan to attend for the first time. Over 12,000 film industry professionals head to Cannes each year to present and discover almost 4,000 films and projects in development at 33 screening venues.

Fueled by this success, the Marché has expanded with the opening of the Riviera and Lérins exhibition halls, forming a hub around the world-famous Palais des Festivals and the Village International, the number one venue for promoting films from all over the world. As a leading global film industry organization, the Marché du Film takes a rigorous approach in adapting to the expectations of industry professionals worldwide and to emerging economic, technological and creative film trends.

Even if you’re a veteran attendee, things are always changing at Cannes so it’s important you stay in the know.

While we wait for the short film's official selection to be determined and discover if we've been accepted, my question would be about finding hotel accommodations so close to the festival date. With most hotels appearing booked, is there a vicinity you'd recommend we stay within regarding accommodations?

What is the best way to pitch a single feature film at The Marche? And if you can't be at the festival for the duration, what is the most effective time to be there to pitch? Thank you.

Elyse Kelly

How impactful/useful would you say attendance is for a director/producer working in animation? We're a small studio that focuses on animated documentaries.

I know you've talked about co-production meetings and networking opportunities for producers. Will there be similar opportunities for directors?

Jana Tolmie

I know Cannes Film Festival is an amazing place for people who are pitching projects to connect but I am wondering as a film student wrapping up there last semester, is there a specific event for example to network for people looking for job opportunities? Specifically in the field of casting?

Chris Valenti

Writer / Producer from Los Angeles. Looking forward to Cannes Marche Du Film!

Patrick Kanehann

Would PGA membership qualify for the Producer's network add-on?

David Poulshock

Can the Producers Newtork add-on be purchased if you have a film that was shown in a festival but hans't found distribution year?

Connor N. F. Field

I already got accredited for the Marché du Film, I am a student and looking to emerge into the entertainment marketing sector, what options are there for me at Cannes for career development/ networking?

Rob Davis

Thanks Guillaume. Will there be more industry events like the investors circle, based more on finance to reflect the current independent fiscal demands?

David Poulshock

Many thanks Amanda, Stage 32 and Guillaume!

Jana Tolmie

So helpful! I'm attending for the first year this year and really didn't know what to expect, this painted a clear picture and provide great tips. Thanks so much.

Fanely Gouguet

Where can screenwriters pitch their feature screenplay please (if at all)?

Robert Franklin Godwin III

Fanely Gouguet Great question! I have the same one.

Amanda Toney

Fanely Gouguet @robert - we bring in 10 production companies, managers and development executives every week on Stage 32 who listen to pitches, which is a great place to start (just go to our top menu bar under "Script Services > Pitch Sessions": https://www.stage32.com/scriptservices/pitch-sessions). When you are at Cannes, the most authentic place to do it is after you have struck up a relationship with someone, after a while if you feel that there is a mutual respect and a creative fit, then approach if there is an interest to hear a short pitch (start with a 60 second logline). If they are interested in knowing more they will ask. Be prepared to answer if you have any attachments or have thought about attachments. I would not jump right into a pitch when you first meet someone at Cannes, though, as it signals that you are a novice. Use the rule of 3 - always offer someone else 3 things first before you ask them to do anything for you (like hear a pitch). Our CEO gives great advice like this on his instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rbwalksintoabar/reels/

Vince J. Trenton

Amanda Toney Thank you so much for this tip! I'm also a bit of a beginner when it comes to pitching, and I plan to pitch my first professional project in Cannes (after my film studies).

Robert Franklin Godwin III

Amanda Toney Thanks for the advice. To be clear, at the level of Cannes, I am a novice. There would no hiding it and I wouldn't try. That said, I wouldn't impose rudely either. I am reaching out to the few contacts I have that may be attending. Touching base in advance is more likely to get the meet or referral.

Lucia Fink

Hi, I couldn't enter the webinar...Is it available to watch the video now?

Stéphanie Ponsin

Hi, I could'n't attend the webinar, is there so place to see the replay :) ?

Robert Franklin Godwin III

On Stage32, go to settings>my library If you registered it should be there.

Amanda Toney

The replay, just like all your Stage 32 education, will be available tomorrow under your settings (top right hand corner, gear icon) > My library

William Joseph Hill

If you’re gearing up for Cannes or looking for some insight from those who’ve been before, there’s a fantastic conversation happening right now in the Stage 32 Producing Lounge!

We’ve got members sharing their best tips, lessons learned, and advice for surviving and making the most of Cannes, from where to eat, what events not to miss, to how to approach networking and meetings at the market.

Whether you’re a Cannes veteran with wisdom to share or you’re attending for the first time and want to ask questions, it’s a great chat to join in on:
