EPISODE 7, SYNOPSIS, SPIRITS

Driven by demonic forces, the plague hits Scotland with a fury in 1517 as the dead pile up in Edinburgh. Regents for James V, 5, King of Scots, sequester him at a distant castle so he isn’t affected.

The dashing and gregarious French Knight, Labatie, ambassador from France, is charged with the young king’s protection. Sister of Pope Leo X, Maddalena de’Medici, arrives to be a tutor and guardian for James V.

Cardinal Albrecht von Brandenburg and Friar Johann Tetzel meet with Pope Leo to formalize an arrangement for the sale of indulgences in exchange for gifts to the Church. This sets the stage for Martin Luther to challenge the Church for exchanging money for forgiveness.

Older sister of King Henry VIII, Margaret Tudor, comes to court with daughter Margaret Douglas at Windsor Castle for a visit with the rest of the Tudor clan. The reunion with Henry, younger sister Mary, and Catherine of Aragon is joyful, especially since all three monarchs have young children.

Margaret and Henry share their struggles, Margaret on how to make sure James V comes to the throne, especially since her other son, Alexander, dies while under Lord Stewart’s care.

Henry confides in Margaret about Catherine’s six pregnancies without a male heir. Mary the First (Bloody Mary) has been born, but she does not solve his problem.

In Germany, Martin Luther confronts the sale of indulgences and posts The 95 Theses on the door of Wittenberg Cathedral. Aided by the latest invention, the printing press, Luther’s pamphlet explodes across Europe and sets fire to the Reformation.

Scottish nobles take revenge against Labatie for the execution of two nobles loyal to the crown, carried out by Lord Stewart. Labatie’s death sparks revenge in Episode Nine.

A major Scottish theologian and reformer, Patrick Hamilton, is unwittingly helped by an enemy of the Reformation, Archbishop James Beaton. A personal angel is appointed over Hamilton.

Spectacular demons and angels do battle throughout the episode and provide a glimpse into conflict in the spiritual realm.
