My name is Arielle, and I am an NYC-based actor. I recently acted in and created the story for the short film, "Sac de Merde." I entered the short into the Stage 32 Short Film Contest, and it was one of the winners! The contest is amazing. If you're one of the winners, you are automatically able to screen at both HollyShorts and Raindance, in addition to screening to hundreds of industry execs online. As an actor, the networking is fantastic. I'm meeting people I never would have been exposed to otherwise, and I can't wait to see what comes out of those relationships.
I really can't rave enough about the contest. We just got back from Raindance with RB and Amanda, and suffice to say, IT WAS INCREDIBLE. I would highly recommend submitting - it's been one of the best parts of my movie-making experience and film festival circuit. If any of you have any questions, please feel free to reach out. I'm obviously very passionate about the process, and would love to touch base. Here is a picture that Amanda took of me doing the step and repeat at Raindance - very cool!!
PS - I submitted to the Short Film Contest through FilmFreeway.Congratulations!
Very Nice of you to share your experience. Can we see your film?
Congratulations

Willem Lodewijk Elzenga Thank you. We raised the money from a small group of investors, and our
ROI initially comes from Amazon Prime Video (so make sure to watch!), and we are now exploring more digital and international outlets.
Jack Binder Thanks, Jack.

What is your proceedure for picking which idea you want to turn into a film?
after I've come up with an idea I'll freely tell my friends about it to see if I enjoy discussing it, then I usually let my better ideas gestate in my mind for many weeks before I pay them any real attention and then once I decide to look into them I am super critical about the marketing and sponsorship of the project usually before I bring any more creative focus to the idea.
How do you pick which idea you want to work on?
I try to forget it. If I can't, I write it.
I have a filmmaker friend who says since things take so long to get going, he doesn't move on anything that he wouldn't want to live with for 5-10 years.
For me it has to be funny, unique, and something I would spend $15 on to see in the theaters. And more importantly, something I feel passionate enough about to spend the next year of my life working on.
Amazing, Dean. Your info and passion are so needed. Thanks so much for sharing!
Thanks so much Deb!

Guy Down The Road
The scene begins in a quite discreet town on the outskirts of a busy city in Northern Europe.
It's Friday, and the weather reminds the towns people of the summer events taking place around the small city during the weekends.
The people in this small town are known for a lot of things, but what sets itself apart from a lot of other cities is it's lack of a lot of the main things in a town. For example, it lacks a police station. Since the early 90's the town disbanded from the counties police department. As many of the people expected chaos to erupt in the town, what happened was the exact opposite.
Instead of the police making sure everybody was safe, the people in the city made sure each other were safe.
Relationships grew stronger between the cities residents and grudges were dropped as the people knew they had to look out for each other in a different way then they had done before.
As the benefits of this knew plan were seen over the next 5 years, the people started to ask questions. Questions that were not answered but questions that were tried to be answered.
...
It was just another day at the coffee shop in town, smiles were flooding peoples faces as they were getting excited for the cites monthly beer fest. One of the customers looks out the window and sees a man approaching down the road. It's evident he's on a mission with his pace. Business continues as usual but then the door opens and...

Hi Dean, Thanks for connecting. I'm impressed by your bio (especially your PhD). I'm a scientist/screenwriter from Colorado. I have a penchant for writing lead roles for strong, smart women and minorities, including several lead roles for Latinas. I have some examples on my Stage 32 Profile page (see Loglines), spanning genres and budgets. Cheers, Tom

I just finished performing in a wonderful sold out show called FOLK CITY SCENES for the award-winning Articulate Theatre Company in NYC www.articulatetheatre.com. We are looking for ways to move the show forward. Last year I starred as Mrs. Antrobus in our successful production of THE SKIN OF OUR TEETH by Thornton Wilder. What a brilliant writer. It is such a privilege to speak his words. Continued success with your impressive endeavors!

Expand postThank u for this amazing post, Dean, and to Stage 32 for asking you to share your knowledge and your expertise with us. I read it like it was written for me, and could relate to some of your "nay- sayer" experiences. I leapt for joy reading how you passionately worked on a No-go script, and made it real. That is true grit, and so inspirational. So many people like to put others down, or reject their work, without giving the next project or person a voice. I could feel your passion, your empathy, your talent from reading your blog, and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Im a huge fan of your work now. Its giving me hope to push the boundaries which have crushed my dreams. Ive learnt so much from Stage 32 blogs, from reading some peoples comments, and from following some posts.. My biggest mentors have given me inspiration, and helped me keep going. I could have chosen a career in Java, or continued as a writer, but my passion lies with film making and Im forging on, against my families wishes, because this is what makes me happy inside. Not many people understand my desire to have a youth film club in South Africa, and barely anyone wants to sponsor it, but its not stopping me from making short films with other children, or from teaching them what I learn on Stage 32 and behind a camera. I love sharing and caring, and its my dream to make everyone happy. I will happily follow all the advice given to me, and succeed beyond my own dreams. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and experiences with us. You made me believe again. :)

Expand commentHi Sahar. Yes, I understood your mail. Your English is good. I was also too oriental at school, and with acting roles for TV ads, its so limited to find work. I see and feel what u saying, coz my life is almost similar. Ive been working paid jobs since the age of 10 and have also developed many talents from around 13yo, so I still have many years to grow and strive for the things I want. I started my film club last year. Ive recently gone back to finish my education, so Im not as active with my writing and filming as Id like to be. Im very similar to you in that we try harder than the next person to succeed, because of how we look and because we dont have many friends. Im lucky to have my moms support with most of what I want to achieve. My rich uncle pays for my education, and wants me to give up filming and writing, and follow his career in IT, which I excel in, but which Ill follow some day when Im ready. I have to keep my filming and passions low key for now, or forfeit an education. I wish life was more simpler. Hope you keep striving for what you want, and get there sooner than you wish for. Hard work pays off, and your energy is good and positive too. Best wishes. :)

WOW ! The world is wonderfull, LIFE is good, many people act bad to uns and destroy chances because of racialism or becaus they cannot see a multi cultural theater + film industrie. With the help of god we will meet the right ones who will help us to realize our visions. We will work hard on it. HEY :) you start with your camp?! Fantastic. As you said it will take time AND we have to give us the time it needs to get there where we want to :) THANK YOU for all your emotional, sensitive words. Say a lovely hello to your mum. Our mums are great. They support us :) Have a successfull time (with studing). We will stay in touch.

Expand commentHi Sahar. Its been a long time since we chatted, and I hope all is going well for you. I start filming next week with my youth film club for the long school break in South Africa, and I just know membership will go up from the 30 we had during the year, as more kids join. Im considering many new ideas for the club, and I pray we get the support we need. Last week I was involved on a womans Indaba event, and I enjoyed being the only female camera crew with 5 males. They treated me equally, and we made lots of jokes all day long. It was my second stint as a camera lady, filming International events. Im hoping to get more, and so far, Im building on my network skills, and forging good friendships. Ofc my skills have sharpened, and Ill take that with me when I make more short films within my youth film club. I hope you have succeeded in making lots of movies, and that you have a wonderful circle of support with it. Lastly, please keep in touch and keep on believing in your dreams. :)
