SYNOPSIS:
Nine-year-old Charlie goes hunting with her father, Roger, and successfully takes a rabbit home to eat. With her desire to go on a road trip with her father, he declines the idea. The next day, Roger drops Charlie off at school but dies in a trucking accident. Now an adult, Charlie and her friend, Georgia go to score some alcohol but go to a bar instead. There, Charlie meets Russ. That night, they have a one-night stand but a few weeks later, Charlie discovers she's pregnant. Scared and afraid of what her religious grandmother will do if she finds out. At a diner, Georgia runs into Russ and returns him to her house where he purposes to Charlie. That night, Charlie and Russ get married. They make their way to California. Now a military wife and a mother to be.
Charlie meets Lola, a police detective and her son, Nicholas. About to fight a pregnant woman over a box of cereal, Nicholas rebuffs the idea and goes for another kind. Months pass and Charlie gives birth to a girl. Leaving her to care for herself and their daughter alone. Charlie gives birth to boy, which makes her think about her own wants and needs. Bumping into Lola at a coffee shop, Lola informs her about joining the police force. Joining Nicholas in boot camp, Charlie and he start to bond. A week after graduation, Charlie is recruited as a scoffer for the chief. Getting him his coffee, donuts and newspaper. During a trip to the donut shop, Charlie takes down a robber. With her arrest, Charlie gains the chief's respect and earns her own desk. Now partners, Nicholas and Charlie go out dancing, this helps Nicholas find confidence in himself to date. A visit from Georgia comes and the two of them go out with Nicholas. Georgia quickly takes a liking to him and become close. Back home after a long night, Charlie misses Russ.
With her son, Lucas, in trouble for handing out condoms to his classmates, Charlie sees it as a nice jester but an invasion of privacy. That night, while being intimate with Russ, Lucas catches them in the act. The next day, Charlie meets Barry, Nicholas's father and Lola's husband. A veteran of the police department. With an invite to Nicholas's wedding, Charlie and Russ attend. Later in the night, Lola is shot. In the bathroom, all by herself, Barry forces himself on Charlie but is caught by Russ. This causes a rift in her marriage and starts drinking heavily. With little left, Georgia pays her a visit and drives to talk to Nicholas. Coming out with the truth, Charlie tells Nicholas about his father's behavior. No emotions in him revealed, Nicholas leaves them. Curious about where his father was when Lola was shot, Nicholas learns that Charlie was telling the truth.
The next day, about to go to lunch with Georgia, Charlie is ambushed by Barry, forcing himself on her again. Feeling alone, about to drink herself to death and jump from the rooftop of the hotel she's staying in. Charlie calls Nicholas. Georgia dies in a hit and run, leaving Charlie with only Nicholas. At the hotel, Nicholas comforts her by putting her to bed. Her last words of the night, Charlie tells Nicholas her father performed his sexual act on her. With his friend asleep, Nicholas goes to the police station and confronts Barry. Things get physical when Nicholas beats Barry up and is about to end him when Nicholas gets a vision of his biological mother. The next morning, Nicholas returns to the hotel room.
Back at the station, while at her desk, Barry leaves the office, badly beaten up. Charlie puts the pieces together, now knowing it was Nicholas who beat Barry up. At his house, Charlie embraces him, thanking him for what he did. Rather than letting her leave, Nicholas offers Charlie to stay the night. The next morning, over breakfast, Nicholas offers Charlie to stay with him, rather than letting her live alone.
With her life back on track, Charlie moves into her own apartment. Nicholas and his wife welcome a baby girl.
Years later, at Nicholas's funeral, Charlie meets Nicholas's daughter, Sierra. Sierra gives Charlie a picture in his memory. With the past behind her, Charlie has her peace.
