By Eric Andresen

GENRE: Drama
LOGLINE:

In poverty ridden 1930’s Appalachia, after the death of her bootlegging husband, a young mother must repay his debts and battle established moonshiners as she slowly builds her own empire.

SYNOPSIS:

It’s 1931. The depression and prohibition have made life harder in the already impoverished community of Pinch, West Virginia. While defending herself against her abusive and alcoholic husband CLIVE RUTH, BRISTOL JOLENE RUTH plants an ax in his back after he threatens their 7-month old infant. Now, inheriting his debts, Bristol is thrust into the corrupt world of bootlegging. She soon realizes that digging deeper is the only way out of the hole she’s in. Bristol trusts no one.

JACKSON HARMAN is the kingpin of bootlegging in the hollers of West Virginia. With his wife and seven sons, each son epitomizing one of the seven deadly sins, Jackson rules his empire with an iron fist. He owns the debts that have been transferred to Bristol, and allows her only a short time period for repayment. After all, business is business. Despite Jackson’s hubris, he is only a small fish in a much larger pond. Corrupt prohibition agent DANNY MCELVOY, the son of Irish immigrants, grew up Hell’s Kitchen and takes full advantage of his position of authority. No one, including Jackson, sells moonshine without paying the price of admission.

Bristol becomes entangled in this often brutal world of deceit and corruption and must weather the storm created by these two power-hungry men. While moving toward her ultimate goal, freedom, she encounters ever increasing challenges and obstacles. In her efforts to free herself from this clandestine community, she must first become part of it. As Bristol delves deeper into this world, it too becomes part of her.
