I have been lucky to have one of the shorts I did screened in London at Raindance filmfestival. I am living in Holland myself but I went there and met quite a few directors at that screening from all over the world and ended up working with 2 of them. One is from Sri lanka and we do all discussions on his projects via zoom or skype or videocalls. It turned out that we worked so well together that he told me he does not want to work with anyone else but me. It was highly unexpected but very rewarding! Have you got any experience on working with directors abroad?

Expand commentHi Ruud Hermans I'm from Trinidad and Tobago. I recently had a film that I composed for screened at the Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival a couple of weeks ago and will be screened internationally very soon . The Director and some of the co-Producers live in England where the film was written, shot and edited. It was a good experience and I had gotten the script beforehand (after signing the NDA of course). We communicated on Skype but most of the communication was via Whatsapp. The time difference was not too bad (they were 5 hours away).
In terms of submitting the cues to the Director I use CudDb. He was new to using it but it was very easy to learn. From there he can look at the cues with the score and make suggestions. The end result was the cues were approved and the film was completed.
Nice to hear that you are working with directors abroud too! Thanks for sharing.
Hi everybody,
I'm fairly new here, but I think this is a moderate place to start! I'm re-entering the orbit of the film/t.v. composing world after touring internationally with Cirque du Soleil (until March of this year).

Prior to that, I worked as composer/orchestrator in Montreal, where I lived for a few years. This had me involved with many En/Fr productions, along with some larger projects such as Bruce Beresford's "Double Jeopardy", and Christian Duguay's "The Art Of War", "Hitler: The Rise Of Evil" etc.
They all seem so far off now, though I do recall they were shot in colour.
I'm curious. Is anybody, aside from me, using Digital Performer as their main DAW? I recently upgraded my system and was about to switch to Logic, but just couldn't hit that button. Now I feel so alone!
Pleasure meeting you here!
-Roger
Linwood Bell ...Yay! I knew I wasn't alone! Pleasure!
I've been there since 2.7 I think. Too old to switch, but I did a couple mixes in Luna last week and I enjoyed mixing in it. I'd still do midi in DP though. The tape and Neve summing is pretty sweet in Luna.
A Logic X man here
Was talking with a Stage 32 about referencing other docs for structure or subject matter, and thought - LET'S DISCUSS! What's your favorite? Share your links below!
Are you using it as research for another doc or a narrative? Or you doing it to generate leads on subject matter experts?

Expand commentGood question Karl! It depends a bit on what project it is. Sometimes if i am working on a short film I just do the music as a composer(or it could even be that i do both music as well as sound design if the sound design aspect is almost part of the music) I did a horror short last year and the jump scares etc were part of the music so i did a fair amount of the sound design too. They only hired a mixing engineer for the final mix. Every project has a different approach to that.

Expand commentKaren, usually the sound designer comes in at post production but sometimes if the producer wants the sound designer on set or have him do the booming(I have seen that happen for small shortfilms sometimes). But it often happens that both composer and sound designer come in after production. I am in favour of being involved as earley as possible, that goes the same for sound design. Well that is only my view of course.

Expand commentHi Karl, I second what Ruud has said. In my experience (mostly sound design and mixing documentaries), the composer and sound designers have had very little interaction, but it really depends on the type of production, and style of music and sound elements, and the people involved. In a documentary, where the goal of the sound editor is often to fix and enhance the "realism" that is already contained in the shot, the sound effects are generally more utilitarian and less artistic. The opposite is often true with horror or sci-fi where the roles of sound effects and music can overlap quite a lot, and might require a more collaborative process.
