SYNOPSIS:
Elijah is the leader of “The Way”, a cult that is a fundamentalist sect of Christianity. He is a loving husband to Daisy and they both have a one-year-old, Charlie. Elijah is preaching in Watford one night; he converts a middle-aged woman called Linda. She is receptive to his message and joins “The Way” that evening. It’s late and he is tired, but after speaking to Daisy he decides that he wants to go home to see her, even briefly. He drives through the night to be able to get home, however his car collides with another and he is seriously injured. He is rushed to hospital in critical condition. He meets with doctors who advise he takes it easy. His fellow leader, James is eager to get Elijah back into the job and working again. With the help of Daisy, Elijah is allowed home, however he suffers from blackouts, and even hearing voices. He decides to speak to his GP for advice. They explain that it seems that he has some PTSD symptoms and maybe speaking to a therapist about what happened might help this. After some frustration, Elijah agrees to see a therapist. Linda speaks to her friend Stacey and tries to convert her, they argue, and Stacey accuses Linda of joining a cult. Elijah agrees to take some driving lessons to ease him gently into it again. Unfortunately, he has another episode whilst behind the wheel and this sets him back.
Elijah meets with his therapist, after a rocky start she manages to get through to Elijah and he agrees to continue with the sessions. Elijah goes to see his dad, Neil. They haven’t spoken in a while and their relationship is clearly strained. He never told them about the accident, and they have only found out through speaking with Daisy. The next day whilst Elijah is preaching, he has another attack and collapses on stage. Elijah has another appointment with his therapist, through speaking to her he remembers something. The Way was created, he created it, to con people into donating money to the church and get rich. He doesn’t remember every detail, but he is certain that James is also involved somehow. Elijah believes that he is being blackmailed by James to do this but when he confronts James about it, he says that it’s the other way round. Elijah agrees to tell the congregation the truth. He doesn’t tell the whole truth but agrees to step away from the church. An argument between Elijah and James ensues that ends in Elijah sacking James.
Neil arrives at James’ house after he has been summoned there. He finds that James has kidnapped Elijah and tied him to a chair in the basement. Furious, Neil gets James to let Elijah go. He runs home and gets Daisy to pack up some things and go with him to Watford. They go to the hotel that he visited before the accident. Daisy is confused and upset but Elijah refuses to tell her what has happened. She leaves and goes back home. He catches up with her at home and tells her what he knows. She freaks out and kicks Elijah out, who goes and stays with his Dad, Neil. Linda goes and prays in the church meeting rooms. Stacey, who is worried about her tries to find her at her house but fails. She decides to look for her at the church, managing to break in through an open window. Elijah goes to the church to see if he can find answers. Elijah, looking through his desk drawer finds a gun and a letter, but we do not see what it reads. He goes to the bathroom, whilst Stacey sneaks up the stairs and finds the gun and the letter. He finds her in his office. When she tries to leave, he panics and hits her over the head with a crucifix. He goes to wash the blood off his hands, and when he comes back out, he comes face to face with Linda, who had come to investigate the noise. He realises that she knows too much, grabs the gun from his desk, there is a struggle. Linda is shot in the neck.
He quickly disposes of the bodies in the woods behind the church. When he gets home, he finds James with Daisy. Daisy is on her knees with gaffa tape over her mouth. Before the accident, Elijah had an affair with James’ wife who has left. Elijah paid James off to keep him quiet. James explains that if he can’t have his wife then he shouldn’t see why Elijah should and slits Daisy’s throat and manages to escape. James goes to the cabin that Neil owns. They used to go as children together. The police begin looking for both Elijah and James. Elijah follows James to the cabin after collecting the gun from the church. Neil arrives to warn them about the police; the cabin has already been surrounded by armed police. James explains that he has nothing left to live for and he intends to be killed by the police, robbing Elijah of getting revenge. The police surround the building, James goes to run out of the cabin with a gun raised but Elijah manages to shoot him before the police can. Now with nothing to lose, Elijah leaves the cabin and is shot by the armed police. Neil goes home, where he is greeted by his wife at the door who hugs him. Charlie crawls up to the door and Neil bends down to pick him up.
