On my way back from the Cannes Film Festival this year – the film I directed, Close Encounters with Vilmos Zsigmond, an 80min-documentary film, was an Official Selection (at Cannes Classics) – I was wondering if I could gather some tips (let’s say five) for those who haven’t already made the step to grab a camera and shoot, for those (like me) who have no budget just passion, for those who are dreaming of having one day a film in Cannes. Yes, you can.&n…
As an artist, I can always find people that will compliment my work, even when I know it is not worthy. It's always nice to hear great things about our work, but we really need to know what people are really thinking about our films, good and bad. We all have these 'yes' people around us. They tell us what they think we want to hear. They offer praise but no criticism. But we must have the criticism from trusted people to improve our craft. The best way to receive this criticism is to ha…
I’m baaaacckkk…And so is the Weekend Blog. Based on all the emails and DM’s I received, you missed your weekly dose of news, vids, tips and tricks. Truly happy to hear how much many of you look forward to perusing all the content I offer up each weekend. But it does beg the question…Why do so many of you choose not to comment and discuss said content? Let’s remedy that this week, shall we! Let’s hear from you down in the Comments section. Remember,…
As filmmakers, we all try to move forward and create our films with the talent, materials and tools at our disposal. Some of these we may have in or arsenal and others we acquire through purchasing, hiring, renting, borrowing or simply putting the “arm” on colleagues. However, apart from a great story and script, some of the most important components of our productions are those resources called humans. Whether above the line or below, these critical creative team members are…
Hello friends and fellow creatives! Erik here from the Stage 32 Happy Writers. One of the best parts of my job is that I get so much face time with executives across the industry. I get to watch as writers around the world pitch to them every week, I get to hear their thoughts, their first reactions and read the feedback they send in for each and every pitch. I'm in an extremely lucky position to be able to ask these executives questions about pitching and what they're seeing in the ind…

Some of you may not know about all the incredible education resources we have on Stage 32, including a 2 year archive of our monthly "On Stage With RB" webcasts. If you're not familiar with our "On Stage With RB" webcast, …
It comes with great delight as we announce the 2nd Annual Feature Screenplay Contest Winners! Our judges were simply “wowed” by the writing caliber and talent of this group, and we couldn’t agree more. The 3 Grand Prize Winners are in for a Hollywood treat. They’ll be flown to Los Angeles to have meetings with a group of industry execs, enjoy a cocktail hour with some of our executive contest judges, be mentored by a Stage 32 Happy Writers team member for 1-year, …
Back in college, my fellow actors and I were eligible for a competition at the Kennedy Center’s American College Theater Festival. A judge watched our production of “Beyond Therapy”, and then got to decide which two actors that would be entered in the competition, but not before sitting down the cast to give reviews of our individual performances. When I got my review she said something that struck me: she noticed that I was a “giving” actor. &nb…
The idea that any good story has a moral heart is not a new idea. Writers, story gurus, developmental editors, everyone who has had any experience with storytelling talks about the importance of having a moral element that drives the protagonist (and antagonist) in any good story. There are many terms people use: moral argument, moral problem, moral flaw, fatal flaw, inner-fault the list goes on, but regardless what the proprietary language used, everyone who advocates for this basic pri…
No weekend News and Notes blog this weekend because I'm out of town...However... As we approach the final stretch of 2016 I thought it might be a good time to reflect a little on the creative goals we set for the year. Need a refresher on the goals you set? Here is where we all checked in to start this year. How are you doing? Making progress? Lagging behind? Changing direction entirely? Let's talk about it in the Comments section below. And, of course, if there is the opportunity to a…
Stranger Things is killing it among the industry people I know right now. Almost everyone who watches it drinks it straight down. I thought I'd try half an ep to see what it felt like. I watched five episodes non-stop, then finished the series off the following evening. Same with the recent Ashley Pharoah show The Living and The Dead from the BBC. I watched it as fast as I possibly could. One is glorious 1980s nostalgia, one is a heart-achingly beautiful journey into Thomas Hardy …
