42 script requests and 38 meeting requests! Congratulations, everyone! Happy Holidays! I hope you continue to have success in 2025!

Jim Boston

Congratulations to the writers who won those requests these last two weeks...here's to more and more success next year (and beyond)!

Joshua Keller Katz

Woohoo. Love making this list. Feels like my request per pitch ratio increases with time, though I've become much more selective as well.

Thank you

I just watched a webinar that stage 32 gave me for free. I really enjoyed and learned a lot. I’m a screenwriter and I wrote a screenplay about the mental illness I have called paranoid schizophrenia. It’s a comedy about the different stereotypes about the illness. Thank you stage 32 for that. Very much appreciated.

This is a chapter on pitching from my book, THE LAST REVEAL - Movies, Screenwriting, and the Decline of Western Cinemazation, but--NOTE--this is about pitching BEFORE the script is written, not as we do here at Stage 32, where we are pitching to get them to request the already finished script:

That's an interesting take on theme, Lee Matthias, and I can see it working in scripts. I approach theme as the opposite of the protagonist’s main flaw. Example: The protagonist is selfish, and the th...

Well, whatever works for you, I guess.

But I kinda see that theme you describe as selfishness, so the action of the story--"becoming unselfish," the arc you identified--remains the same.

I would emphasize that a one word theme— loneliness — is not a theme at all. That’s definitely an area to explore, a problem, but not an argument. You need a statement that you can prove or disprove....

Outlines

Someone asked me how professional screenwriters write outlines. I replied:

Writers write. Whatever way it works for them. When you start out, you're looking for the process. And over time you find out the only process is your process.

There are writers whose outlines are nearly as long as the finishe...

I usually don't indulge in making outlines until after I'm done writing; that helps me to remember what's ongoing with the plot. I tend to write what I see as the characters unfold their story before me.

Structure - The Elephant in the Room

This is from an article I wrote a long time ago:

Story structure has become a riddle. We have bona fide experts, people with solid credentials, telling us story structure is critical. Many argue that story structure comes in 1 or 3 or 4 or 5 or 7 or even 9 acts! Others proclaim story structure to be...
