I get that. You're watching a film and expect it to go one way and doesn't. You then think, hey if it went in this direction it would have been better or more interesting or even move into another genre.

I have notebooks filled with ideas. I kept them not too far so that I can take a look. An idea, is not a product you hear that a lot and it's true. If you have an idea for a statue it's not the finished sculpture. Remember that, and try to find the best container for your ideas...

Boomer's lucky. Most people don't know anyone in the industry. When I wrote my first script as a challenge from my wife, I had little knowledge of the craft of screenwriting. I've worked with Playbooks as an actor and that's close as you get. I gleamed what I could from the Internet. When I finished the first rough draft I consulted with an older veteran actor. He asked some questions about my script that added some great scenes for motivation of my characters but some of his advice was counter productive. I padded my script with useless information and scenes. He really new about theater not screenwriting. Here's a scream. I always got high marks for story and concept in contest, low marks like 7's for formatting and structure. Re-did my plastic template I used and corrected all the margins. It's close to perfect without the software. Just got back my evaluation from PAGE for my comedy. Used the old bad template on it. Got a 10 in formatting and structure and 6's and 7's for story and concept. They really like my dialogue which is rare for a rough draft. I never got a 10 in anything. Go figure. I'm getting long winded because you're me three years ago. Start with the story you have the most passion for. Write an outline for it. I always know my end and how I'd like to introduce my characters. The middle is the bitch for me. I wrote my third screenplay backwards. I then knew what scene I needed to flow into the scene I just wrote. Good luck and have fun with it. Since most writers don't make money or much money, you might as well enjoy yourself. It's a hobby till someone pays you.

In my view, all scripts are essentially stories so you have to be a storyteller....to your family, kids, friends, people in the supermarket queue...anyone who will listen. if you can engage them, that is a good start. Personally I believe in the process of collaboration. It usually helps enhance your ideas and often suggests new material. I love working with other people and sharing the creative process most of the time.

Through this site I've seen a number of screenwriters in my general area. A monthly support group meeting for coffee or whatever to discuss our problems with scripts from loglines to needed scenes would be a good idea.

I don't know, maybe I'm weird or just a newbie at this, but I actually like having to do rewrites over and over again. It doesn't feel like "work" to me. If something feels like work, maybe the person shouldn't be in that field if they are going to complain. I like rewrites because I get to explore the story through the other angle. If someone accepts the script how it is, NEAT! If they say "maybe it needs a bit juicing up here" ALRIGHT! Let's get those creative juices flowing and see what we can do. This article kindof puts a downer on writing. I guess some people are like that though, love the profession..hate the writing. Wait, what? Writer is in the title they signed up here. Sigh. I can't wait until Screenwriting is my actual job, only thing I will complain about is my sleep deprivation. But then the ideas only get better from there.

Replace the word [screenwriting] in that headline with [truck driving] [corporate finance] [computer programming]... Hopefully you love you what you do, but it's still a job, right?

I can't think of anything more rewarding than being part of a writer's room...

Thak you for the article. While I do a lot if rewrites, I do move on and enjoy the next project. Glad I don't fall into any of the negative categories.

You make a good point, Alle. Part of why I don't like treatments are because it can never be as good as reading the script. It is so much easier to skim through the script to get an idea of the writer's style and the potential of the story, than just read a 1-5 pages treatment who was polished in a way it doesn't necessarily tell the real story anymore. I'll write treatments if absolutely needed, but...the real piece of work, the script, should speak for itself. Treatments and scriptments should be personal tools for the writers. Don't you think?

Treatments are primarily a tool to see if a writer can plot - I still hate 'em.

I have never written a treatment. The closet thing I did was write an 8 episode bible for a proposed television show outlining the episodes. For feature screenplays I always write a solid, catchy logline and a one/two page synopsis.

Treatments can be a good way to ensure the dramatic elements of the story are strong, full, engaging and fit appropriately.

It's always different for each writer, it's best to just write what works for you. They can be really helpful when writing the script itself I've found. For getting a script sold or funded it's a necessity however.

I am a big fan of Ouran High School Host Club and Black Blood Brothers and other things they have done. I love their shows and I love their ADR writers and ADR directors. And would love to work with at least one of them. (That would probably be Michael Tatum because he is my favorite everything Voice and Writer). Haha. But yes! Thank you! And that is great that DBZ has helped you along. OHSHC is what really helped me. It is great!

but in celtx, its 10.5 by default. can we change it to 12 point?

Celtx uses the correct size typeface when it produces the pdf Shrirang, are you looking at the editing screen which is quite small by default?

Jeff is right, 12 Courier or New Courier is the standard. Hands down.

thanks CJ, if celtx converts it to correct font size in pdf then no problem. I asked this because when I exported document to text format and opened it in MSword, it shows 10.5, that's why...

Then there's nothing to worry about Shrirang. Text format has no font settings embedded, it's just raw character information. What you are seeing is Word opening the file and applying it's own standard typeface.

I don't do it as often as I should. I think I should start doing that more! I have a lot of interesting people on my list it would be nice to know what they are doing.

Reece, You make a real good point. I read your post and went and started to check it out. I realized that with over 400 People in my network that could take a lot of time. As a matter of fact, I am not sure that the new layout here even shows a wall post of an network associate if they were to indeed post a project that way. i guess I just check under toolbox>job postings and look around there.
