I have a couple of ideas for helping to finding your type - 1) ask your Friends on FB to give you three words that describe you. See what words come up most frequently - this kinda gives you an idea as to how others see you (cuz we always see ourselves a little differently). Also, for the last couple of years, I keep an Excell sheet on all my auditions - date/project/CD/role/etc - what are you being called in for the most? This gives you an idea as to how CD's are interpreting your headshot, or how they see you. Hope this helps!!

Thank you so much for the advice. I think that what I find hard is that my best and closest of friends all say that at first they simply didn't like me or didn't want to know me because I come across as "posh" .... once they got to know me they discovered the opposite was true. But, you have to accept that it hurts to have people say that you come across as unapproachable ..... I guess it's a bit like Rosamund Pike - we were in school and played 'cello together. She also comes across as very "posh" (we picked up our fabulous English accents at Badminton School!!) but is the most down to earth person out there. In my opera career I went from doing the "crazy sister" roles like Dorabella (cosi fan tutte) to crazy witches .... :-) I like the crazy witches (very dramatic roles but with an intensity that would work well in sci-fi since we have to be "in a trance" for the roles) but then I have a very dry and witty sense of humour and just love comedy. I'm still doing opera but heading more towards acting and recently did Drew from Richard Fishers' Funeral and it just felt so natural - easier than opera .... you have to remember that there are a lot of opera singers out there who think Stanslavski is a Russian composer, so being on stage with them can be tedious and limiting. I've done workshops and classes but they were more geared towards realism in performance and interpretation. So, time to take a trip to the actorsgreenroom.com, we are organising the first Stage32 meeting in Geneva (Switzerland) so this could be something for the agenda and as for my FB friends ..... I'm scared my friends will tell me to get roles as an extra in bar scenes :-) ha ha ha! Again, a HUGE thanks for your valuable input! Stage 32 rocks!!!

Haha great! Yes, part of it is tough because you have to be very honest with yourself and hope that others will be completely honest with you about how they truly perceive you on a first impression. Glad to hear that it sounds like you already have a lot of useful information and are well on your way to getting more :)

sagaftra.org, agentassociation.com, backstage.com, entertainmentcareers.net all have lists. Are you taking any classes? That's a really good place to start. Do you know any fellow actors personally? That, too, is a great place to start. Nothing better than a recommendation from someone you know and trust.

Back in the day, we used to pick up the agency directory books from Samuel French -- but that was back when the Internet wasn't much more than dancing hamsters. They still might be publishing the books, but last time I looked through one the info was pretty outdated. D Marcus has some really good links for agency lists, but you will want to research those to find an agency that's right for you. I would recommend first getting acclimated to living in L.A. before trying to get an agent/manager. Nowadays you can self submit for casting notices on LA Casting and Actors' Access, giving yourself a lot of opportunities to audition and book work. Plus, getting involved with a good class and group will let you network organically too, and you may get some good leads for a good agent/manager that way too.
