Kim Kahana, Sr. (born 1929) is an American actor, stunt performer and action choreographer of Hawaiian and Japanese descent. He has done stunts for over 300 movies and television programs and runs a stunt school in Groveland, Florida that has trained over 15,000 students.

Unable to read or write, Kahana dropped out of school in third grade. At age 13 he hitchhiked across the United States by himself, sometimes stealing in order to eat His performing career began as a knife and fire dancer in a stage show called Samoan Warriors.

Kahana served as a paratrooper in the Korean War where he was captured and shot by an enemy firing squad. Feigning death, his captors left him in a mass grave from which he escaped. A hand grenade explosion also rendered him sightless for two years and permanently blind in his left eye. The U.S. Military awarded Kahana one Silver Star and two Bronze Star Medals, as well as two Purple Hearts for his services.

Kahana also performed and coordinated fight scenes and stunts (often uncredited) for numerous TV shows, including 28 episodes of Kung Fu, and made numerous appearances on other programs, including Mission Impossible, The Six Million Dollar Man, Vega$, Magnum P.I., Charlie's Angels, Quincy. Fantasy Island and The Brady Bunch. Because of his size (5' 7", or 168 cm) Kahana frequently acted as stunt double for female actors, including Stephanie Powers of The Girl from U.N.C.L.E. and Sally Field on The Flying Nun.

Kahana has served as a member of the Stuntmen's Association of Motion Pictures and spent eight years on the Screen Actors Guild's Safety Investigative Team and the Stunt Safety Committee. He runs a production company called Stunt Action & Safety Coordinator, Inc. that runs second unit production for major motion pictures. He opened the Kahana Stunt School in 1972 to train performers in stunt work and safety, as well as how to navigate the motion picture and TV industries.

Calling all Scriptwriters! Time to get on your computer and write that contest winning short script. The Tampa Bay Film Society has launched a new short script contest and is seeking two movie scripts for production in 2018.

Entry deadline is December 31. Winners will be announced in January with production date TBA. The second script will be produced in early fall 2018.

Contest entry free for TBFS members and $10 for non-members. We will offer script analysis for additional cost of $10 for all entries for writers wanting a critique of their work.

October TBFS Workshop Reveals Audition Secrets

What is your casting director seeking when you go to at that all important audition? Come to the October Workshop and get up-to-the minute casting tips from our very own Casting Director, Bobbi Hill and Orlando Casting Director Nancy McBride at our October 28th Workshop to be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites, 3990 Tampa Road, in Oldsmar.

Nancy is the go-to Casting Director for everything from Film, Commercials, Infomercials, and Industry videos. Her clients have included the likes of: Campus Crusades, MTV, CMT, Bass Pro Shop, Super Nanny, NASA, ESPN, C Media/HBO Casting, Atlas Films/Dr. G Medical Examiner, Jordan Direct, and many more. She is also state President of Women in Film & Television.

Bobbi has a full-service casting company, with 34 years of experience. She also is experienced in casting over thousands of varieties of projects, from feature and independent films to commercials, industrials, voice overs, television, radio, theatre, infomercials, music videos, documentaries, trade shows. Worked with clients such as Coke, Jerry Springer, CMTV, Blue Jays, Coors Beer, Cold Case files, Campaign ads, Pep Boy, Stanley Steemer, Must live in Pinellas County commercials, Reality shows, two TV series, Walk on Water, and Condo Cops, currently being aired and many more.

Bobbi and Nancy will offer casting tips and outlooks from their separate views as casting directors. Bobbi has over 34 years casting experience, and Nancy McBride, National and State President of Women in Film And Television, Florida has also made a name for herself over the years as a casting director. I belong to a great screenwriting group in Tampa - Screenwriters of Tomorrow. Their feedback and comments have helped me to make my scripts better. The first 45 minutes is a lecture on screenwriting. The balance of our 4 hours is dedicated to writers who bring 15 pages of their scripts. We each take part in reading and then we critique the work. We meet the 4th Saturday of every month at the Safety Harbor Library. If you live in the Tampa Bay area, check us out. We are also on Facebook.

FLORIDA FILM NETWORK GENERAL MEETING Please join us on Tuesday, July 19th at Suite 4K Studios from 7-9pm. We have a full lineup of guest speakers: Chris Polidoro, Josh Warden and Paul King will be discussing special effects makeup. Rick Danford – Director/Producer/Actor – Some of Rick’s Horror shorts are: The Book of Nightmares, The Thing Under The Bed and The Lost. Austin Janowsky – Austin is a professional comic book artist/creative director since 1994. He has worked with amazing companies like Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, NASCAR and more! After working for Marvel Comics, Image Comics, Dynamite Entertainment, Cracked Magazine on characters in the biggest movies to have come out, he decided to try to be in movies himself. Just starting out, Austin has already been known for his work on The Book of Nightmares (2015), BS Meeting (2015) and Relation Shipwreck (2015). He enjoys the challenge and the work needed to create great performances in each film he is in regardless of the size of the role! His film “Love Hate” was just shown at the SSFSF St. Petersburg Muvico. Come on out and meet these wonderful talented professionals.

LOOKING FOR A SOUND ENGINEER FOR A SHORT MOVIE FFNTB’s production of Just My Luck needs a Sound Engineer. We have filmed most of the short movie, but we are adding some action scenes. I am screenwriter recently transplanted from Pittsburgh to Saint Petersburg, FL. I studied theatre acting and film in college before transitioning into screenwriting. Horror and Science Fiction Thrillers are my cup of tea. Now that I have multiple full length features written under my belt and some competition experience, I'm wanting to actually turn those ideas into film. Next week I begin filming the continuation of my web series, which I act in and write. Wanting to meet other film makers out there who would be interested in being part of the process. That starts with meeting other artists. I feel like Stage 32 might be of service for that.
