Timing is how long something takes, spacing is the amount of change between drawings.

Eases mean subtle change at the beginning and end of movements, bigger change in the middle.

What they don't mention, but is very important, was the numbering. This scene was shot on two's, so each drawing appeared on two frames. The first keyframe would have been numbered 1, and depending on...

Dark fantasy animation of the 80s

Here’s a video that came across my feed that may be of interest here. Ten animated films of the 1980s, many are often overlooked.

Great share, Mike Boas! I love The Secret of Nimh, it's such an overlooked gem. I had both it and the sequel on VHS as a kid. I also had The Last Unicorn, but that movie legit unsettled me and gave me...

Thanks, Mike Boas. I haven't seen any of these Animation movies. They're on my watchlist now.

Mike Boas

Secret of NIMH is one of my favorites! Really the only hit on the list, though many are terrific.

I got the new blu-ray of The Pied Piper last year, having never heard of it before. Really incredible to look at.

Kevin Gamble

The 80's was an amazing time for film, thanks for sharing!

I'm not surprised "The Garfield Movie" made that much, Tom Lapke. A lot of adults grew up reading the comic strip and watching the cartoon. So, not only are families seeing the movie, those adults are...

When the first Garfield movie came out 20 years ago it performed so well around the world that a sequel came out 2 years later set in Europe. I'm happy to see that global popularity going strong and the movie doing so well.

Just wait till Despicable Me hits July 3. That will probably be huge.

Indie Animation Studios Looking for Projects?

Anyone know of such places? I am a writer/producer able to pitch an animated project to some top people but I need to find an indie studio who is at least willing to give me a quote for the project. Most seem to have shut doors to proposals. Thoughts? This is an animated war-drama in the vein of "Pe...

There are many who will bid on a job. Most in Canada, the states are all producing their own -- Spain is also thriving.

Thanks Laurie. Any leads of great studios in Canada that are open to this?

Michael Wallach I know an animation studio in India called VawWorld which is run by Indian animator Kumar Sambhav. Want to speak with them?

I do love a great cartoonish performance though. Over the top characters have become taboo in that they're too much, too in your face, or too intrusive, but they really remain effective narrative tools for communicating complicated plot mechanics with lower stakes by being overly dramatic

I definitely hope they find work at other studios or start their own thing.

Brian Smith

This is definitely unfortunate. It always sucks when the artists get the hammer dropped on them. Also, this is unfortunately symptomatic of the overall health of the whole entertainment inudustry. Animation is not immune, but I'm also confident that better days are ahead.

Sam Sokolow

Agree with Kevin Jackson and lean toward their own thing. It's a moment for independents to make quality entertainment en masse.

He should've clarified Traditional animation instead of 2D animation. I have done 2D animation on shows that required no drawing for the animation, and cleanup and color were only used for the models that were rigged, not frame by frame.

Brian Smith
