It’s that time of year, people. Can I get a hearty “YES!” It’s time for November Write Club. So let’s hunker down. And. Get. It. Done. Whatever “it” is for you. We’ll use the 30 days of November as a personal deadline for whatever project you’re working on; be it a first draft, a rewrite, a TV pilot, a short, a feature, a pitch, whatever. There are no parameters other than what you choose to accomplish within the month of November. We’ll support, inspire and cheer each other on throughout our 30-day endeavors. We’ll encourage each other to reach our individual goals. Please keep in mind: this is not a competition. This is not a win/lose thing. No word count. No page count. No. This exercise is about pushing forward. In the weeks ahead we’ll share our highs and lows within this ongoing thread, and share our progress within the weekly November Write Club check-in blogs every Sunday. Remember participation is key. You must check in and report your progress, and participate by supporting and encouraging others all month long. There’ll be a well-earned “gift” at the end, an extended push forward with whatever step may be next for you. So whaddaya say? You in?

Thanks, Beth. Actually, I'm on my 5th draft of it. lol But, these characters keep changing my mind. lol That's why I'm determined to get it all together in November and fine tune the best draft possible.

Yeah, I know... Working on two simultaneously can be problematic—you are well aware of one script that I'm working on, Anthony. So we'll see. I've been doing a ton of outlining, working things out in my head, etc. I should be able to get far, but I'll need my fellow Write Club members to keep me motivated. Lol! ;)

Oh, you're on the fifth draft, Linda? Whatta great goal for November. After all that preliminary work, you then should be able to pin it down and focus during this month. Get it where it needs to be. ;)

I sure hope so. Every time I think it's taking the right turns, the characters shift gears on me, and then I rewrite it. lol So, my goal is to stay focused in one direction (hopefully the right one) and polish it to the max.

Hey, Beth. I'm going to be working on a complete rewrite of a script that I started awhile back. I was halfway finished when I lost direction of where I wanted it to go. I'm also doing NaNoWriMo and writing a book on the same said script. I WILL be done with both by the end of November. Thank you for bringing up this project, it helps to get everyone motivated, sort of a kick in the ass to get us all working again.

I'm in. Been working on my first feature script since June and about half way through the first draft. Didn't outline at all at first just hit the page running with my idea. I knew where I wanted to go just had to stop for a while with my home flooding in Louisiana and figuring out the details to connect the beginning with the end...now outlining the middle and end to make sure it all makes sense. This could be a really good exercise to get that done.

Hi Brandon. I'm so sorry to hear about your home flooding. Did all your family and friends fare well? Big congrats on working towards your first script! That's huge! So, as far as your focus this month, are you working on an outline and also completing a first draft? Or just an outline? I too like to keep things a little open, see what I discover along the way. But for a first script (well, any script) it is helpful to have a plan. That first one can seem daunting. Let us know how we can help. ;)

That's a genre I've never done before either. I may have to hit you up later for your research. Maybe you could point me in a direction. Lol!

Beth, yes. It'll be a first draft. I'm going to be writing a Pilot that feels like, "Orange Is The New Black" MEETS "Wild." A secluded and off-grid environment that houses the nations' worst juveniles is the only thing that separates the innocent from the evil. The best chance to prevent the spreading of heinous violence is to introduce to the group, a young teen who has everything to loose and has nothing in common. It's going to be fun!

@Beth I'm doing my own adaptation of Paradise Lost, something I've wanted to write since I was a freshman in college 7 years ago. Two features later I'm ready to go. It'll be divided into two stand alone feature scripts, the first focusing on the war in Heaven and the second focusing on Adam and Eve. I've spent the last 6 months primarily fleshing out the first since the war as told is only a chapter and half long in the book and I am oh so excited with what I've come up with. So excited it's finally time to start getting this epic baby down on paper. Time to take the plunge once more. Happy Writers better be watching out in a year or so.

Tia, I'm so happy to hear that Write Club has inspired you to join and to tackle your writing. :) I would suggest that you choose one script to focus on this month. If you've been frustrated and haven't made much progress, perhaps working on only one script would be best. Then to make progress, perhaps work out an outline first. Plan out the script, loosely or beat by beat, before writing a first draft. Of course every writer has a different process, so do what works best for you. But from your post it sounds like you don't have a clear direction for your story. With this 30-day deadline, perhaps an outline would be helpful. ;)

Beth we were fortunate to only have about 4/6 inches of water so we were able to save most of our stuff but as far as construction goes there's little difference between inches and feet. It's still a huge inconvenience and you can't live there during reconstruction...but we've been back in for over a month now...some friends won't be back in till the new year. As far as the script I'd like to finish the outline for sure. I have written two short screen plays in the past year and a half with one already shot and trying to get into Festival circuit. Next one goes into pre-production in the next few months. I have found I'm fairly decent on writing dialogue but a feature is a whole different beast so I need to hone the craft of starting correctly. Made the rookie mistake of just jumping in because I knew how I wanted to start it. It was supposed to be my next short but it just took off. So that's where I am at!

Thank you Beth. My goal? To be honest with all of you, the goal is to remove any doubt about WRITING RULES or FORMATTING when it comes to Screenplays. I have a lot of ideas and material to work on. RB has mentioned this many times before "We all have our "System" or "Way we do things" so, I'll explain "My way of doing things" and ask for advice, in case I'm doing something wrong. Since I always work on multiple scripts, I'll mention whatever script I need help with.

Niksa, I'm sorry to hear you've been dealing with some doubt — we all have. You are not alone. Perhaps it's a matter of adjusting perspective. There are no absolute rules to screenwriting. Much of it is subjective. So perhaps consider all the 'dos and don'ts' and blanket statements generally thrown around as "common practices" and/or "guidelines." We all know there are exceptions to everything, and each writing choice is relevant and dependent upon one's creative intent and the context of a particular screenplay. Writing is much more complex than simple black and white "rules." So I kindly suggest to take, learn and absorb as much as you can from many different resources that are available to you. Use what works what resonates, make it yours, and discard the rest. If you need some book recommendations or other tips, I'm sure Club members will be willing to share. I hope that helps!

Yup, you're not the only slow poke, Aray. Haha! I tend to spend a lot of time working things out in my head. I also love to refine things, I'm in a constant state of rewrite. Lol! Plus my life is very busy and chaotic — I distract very very easily. So part of the November challenge for me is to step up my daily production. Get it out of my head and on the page! Here's a tip for those of you with time/focus/schedule challenges: use a timer. That's right, I've resorted to tactics often used with children. Lol! Because I juggle so much during the day, it helps me to better manage my time. :)

How long should each act be in a teleplay or television script?
2 people like this
I know there is no rule but I've seen some table and assuming you are writing a 3 act episode, Teaser (3-6) pages, Act 1. (12-15) Act 2. About 20 pages and act 3. (12-15) pages. Each page is about 1 minute.
3 people like this
Mark: if it is a 5 Act Teleplay, 12 pages per Act give or take. The first few Acts at times have more pages than the last 2 Acts. It's a guideline so do with it as you will.

Well, I'm more of a feature writer, but the industry standard for the page count of a one hour-drama is between 45 and 63 pages—50-55 is generally where you want to be. For half-hour comedies, this count needs to be between 22 and 32 pages. So it depends on which format you are writing, Mark. Here's an article I found, perhaps it will be helpful to you: https://screencraft.org/2016/01/05/the-screenwriters-guide-to-formatting....

We all do things differently but some writers don't pay attention when it comes to accuracy, in this case, the accurate scene location. If you mess this part up, no manager, agent or producer will ever take you seriously, no matter how good your story is. It all depends what you write about but if you have some of well known public buildings, monuments, famous places mentioned in your scripts, there can be no mistakes. I'm just asking for some opinions regarding this but I'm sure some or most of you did the same thing (at one point). I have a scenes in various scripts that take place in the White House, Pentagon, this secret White House underground bunker...etc. I extracted every possible scene location I could find from some of the scripts, like the West Wing and some others that mention The White House. I'm I doing something wrong here? Just to be clear, I don't even need any lines from any writers, just the accurate description of some place or location. I know I probably sound like an amateur but, if any of us gets this part wrong, we are good as dead. Would any of you agree with this Accurate Scene Location theory or if you have some other way, please let me know.

@Niksa - I am facing something very similar with my science fiction novel. What I strive for is credibility. I make sure that my "science" is plausible if not possible (and I have a physicist friend to check me and make sure I am not being ludicrous - I don't mind stretching the imagination and that is also part of the fun, as long as it doesn't come across as ridiculous), and I research locations. One scene takes place at CERN so I researched CERN thoroughly online so that my locations make sense, but I don't minutely study every detail. And...we are talking about a work of fiction, so I also believe you have some leeway. I read somewhere that one director goes to the extreme of actually having the trash in waste baskets that are in the scene be trash that actually reflect what would have been there in reality - even though no one would ever see it that closely. One thing to remember is that while there are rules, writing is very subjective. What one person loves, another person may label as drivel. One person would think that "trash accuracy" is great - another would think it a colossal waste of time and resources. If I were you, I wouldn't drive yourself crazy with this. GOOD SOLID writing that tells a well-told story will garner a lot of attention - even if there is 1-2 "oops" in it buried within. Just my opinion ;)

So yesterday (It's Nov 2 here) I began outlining 5 x5 minute scripts for my webseries. That was great! And instead of trying to insanely smash out 'goals' and kill my self doing it, a habit of mine that has slowly broken me down over the years, I have decided to set small, manageable targets and rejoice if they are not met. Failing forward. Enjoying the reduced pressure. And today I simply want to outline my crowdfunding video, and consider the C story for each ep of the series. Loving this group!

Nancy, I know exactly what you mean. I have some Sci-Fi scripts and in Sci-Fi we all predict what the future might look like, what are the living conditions on some planet, its size, atmosphere, color, the technology in general. We have to describe these things, the way we see the movie scenes while we play them in our heads and all of it needs to make a little sense, because it's part of the story and because it's Science Fiction. But, in this case no one can trash any of us if we are accurate. If someone does, he/she is not worthy a second of our time. Does any of this make sense, I'm not sure but there are cases where writers got a big PASS for being sloppy when it comes to this. Anyway, the list of locations INT. or EXT. when it comes to the White House, Pentagon, any landmark in L.A. or New York is always the same and once I have all the possible scene locations, that's it. What I write about is what makes the story Interesting, good or not so good. Thank you for taking time to write all that but I'm not gonna gamble by giving someone even a chance to trash me based on Wrong Location.

@Niksa - I admire your dedication to accuracy, Niksa. My physicist friend is actually on the team that discovered the Higgs boson and conducts research at CERN. He mentioned that Dan Brown was not very plausible in what he depicted in his story line - yet the book and subsequent movie was a success. I am not saying don't be accurate (I do lots and lots of research so that I am at least plausible which adds to the enjoyment of the story), I am just saying don't go to such extremes that it steals your joy. It's all about the story ;) I LOVE Aaron Sorkin's The West Wing and he is known for doing his research - yet the TV set is not very accurate: http://www.whitehousemuseum.org/special/wwtv.htm It's all about the story :)

Niksa, accuracy/truth is extremely important to me as well; being authentic with the story, characters, settings, etc. The level of accuracy often depends on your subject matter. However as a screenwriter you need not go overboard with details. Capture enough to be "right." Most of the research I do for a story I end up not using it, but yet it informs my writing. The goal is to paint a vivid picture in the mind of the reader. My thought, keep reading scripts from TV shows/films that deal with similar topics and themes as you are creating. See how the pros deal with it and follow their lead. :)

Beth, where do we post our updates and respond to other's work. I've decided to change my project for this adventure. I'm going to try and finish my pilot episode and create a series bible for a script that I've been working on. It's based on my Assumptions book series. Still doing the Nanowrimo also, it's going to be a busy month. Can't wait to see everyone's creations.

Always ncie to be missed, BethI take each day as it comes! I've been around, just haven't been as active. Issues with both my wife and father-in-law's health took up most of my time, but I never stopped writing or percolating ideas. Over the summer I completed another pilot before I took the Stage 32 Mentor Series of How To Write a Series Bible with Michael Poisson. That took some time to complete but well worth the time! Been reading more scripts than I used to regardless of the time it takes me. Will be working on a few outlines before the end of the month. I thrive off of stress. No worries Beth, in due time I'll spread my genius around (note the sarcasm and bullshit).

Best wishes on all of your writing endeavors!

I look forward to the November Write Club After-Party at RB's place....last year was hella good....converting his hot-tub into a Champagne-Filled Cold Tub was one of the coolest things I've ever seen! How can RB top that this year?

Nancy and Beth. I know what you mean but you know how everyone will advise any one of us: if you wanna learn how things are done (in this line of work) you have to read and that's what I do. I read a lot and when I find some location or settings, I simply copy it. I never go into small details, there's no need, it's pointless even if you MUST do it that way because things inside or outside keep changing all the time, I just need to be sure I got the location and settings right. I honestly don't care what color wallpapers anywhere are or how big is sofa, just important details about settings matter. I remember reading once on some site where a script consultant tried to explain to some writer who in his script described a sound of rocket in space. The consultant told him, there's no sound in space and he was 100 percent right but the writer asked a few times, how come, why not.... These details I do care about and I'd rather spend an hour or two on research than sound stupid. As for the goals, on December 1st, I'll post whatever I complete this month (various scripts).

Barbara, thanks for sharing a great tip: set small, manageable targets and rejoice if they are or are not met. That's what I'm doing this November, setting daily goals. Hopefully this 30-day exercise will help me better manage not only the work, but my schedule and my anxiety. By focusing on smaller tasks, within a larger goal, you can make steady progress. Better roll with the punches when that's all you can do. For example, I was doing well today, and like Aray, "life" blew up and I had to adjust. So it's gonna be a late night for me! But I still should be able to hit my goal.

Hi! Pretty much done with this draft. There've been many before it, but I think this one could be it - I've been working on this (feature) since January. Right now, I'm preoccupied with a line of dialogue that could be funnier. Said line, if you're curious, is "Y'all need Jesus" and is uttered by an old, black lady, having overheard a young man reciting a distasteful theory on sex and money to his friend. Trite, I know. It was originally a placeholder. Suggestions for a replacement? P.S I apologize if this isn't the place for me to ask. Thanks, Tamim

Wow! I just did it! I toyed around with C stories, and wrote the basic outline and some of the dialogue for my crowdfunding video. Crap, that feels good. And we are only on Day 2. Well, Day 2 here in Australia. Happy Day 2 to everyone else in advance! Margaritas at mine if you are in Sydney.

@Nancy thanks for the compliment, but I wouldn't call myself amazing. Maybe crazy and determined. After 12 books and being in Nano for the past three years, I think it's easy to rip out a book in 30 days. Now, the real issue is trying to get a pilot and bible developed, that's the challenge. I saw that you were writing sci-fi adventure, that's so cool, I wish had that talent to write those sorts of stories. Can't wait to see what you got going on.

"David, I'm so sorry to hear about your family's recent health problems. I hope everyone is doing okay." Thank you for the concern. My father-in-law had a kidney transplant done 9 years ago. Last week, they found one of his heart valves needed replacement. Because his heart was working overtime, his kidney was working harder. Now his kidney isn't working at optimal performance because of the heart issues and has to go back on kidney dialysis for the rest of his life. He's 74 and just like me, a fighter to the end. "You know, you never cease to amaze me—and that's no bullshit. Lol!" Thank you kindly. I never see myself in the light others see me in. I just do what I need to do to move forward and if that provides inspiration or motivation to others, bonus! Have to get back to work on fleshing out those three new one hour drama pilot concepts. Hope to start one of the outlines in a few weeks! Once I know which one it is, I'll let you know!

Short version - 2 projects for Challenge: Notes in Vic novels and blog posts. First task done - decided what to work on for challenge. Kind of cheating maybe, because I would be working on one anyway. Two things I’m pulling first 5 novels in my series to add a page of “Notes” (and think of something better to call it). Each novel has a cameo by real person, at least one cryptid and lots of little mentions of daily life that most people are unaware of (1920’s). Anyone else do this or have suggestions? Not totally an idea out of thin air. Graham Masterton early horror novels - The Manitou in particular - had actual news article at beginning. This is just a tweak to that. I read yesterday how others have had people say they were wrong about historical facts. Me, too, and so far they have all been wrong but it is still irritating, so this might lessen the incidence. Also, I am a Nancy Drew fan (originals) and they always had bits of reality in them. (I like to think of my character as Nancy Drew with a gun and war ax.) 2nd task for challenge is 4 blog posts. Can’t get myself to blog - would rather write novels - but keep hearing that I “should” blog. So I will try to write 4 things to begin posting weekly after holidays. Maybe I can keep going if I have a running start. In spare time will be working on illustrated story, but not totally in control as I am editing around illustrations as they arrive. For fun I’m beginning book 7 in series.

Oh, I’m sorry to hear that, Aray. I have found that when I have a blow up with a friend or family member, or if they’ve done something they’re not even aware of that’s sending me over the edge, I vent it all on paper. Then I save those papers for later when I need to write an angry scene and it brings all those emotions right back to mind, but for a creative purpose. And, as a bonus, their stuff doesn’t bother me anymore because I’ve released it. Anyway, good luck with tonight’s creative pursuits!

Ok, that should have said woman ON woman. And even that phrase sounds like I am writing porn. Which I am not. Just to be clear. Sigh.

Love what you said, Barbara. Lol. Okay, tonight I start typing. Like Stephen King says, "the scariest part, is starting" or something to that effect. But, once that first scene is in front of me and I pretty much got my ending as a roadmap, the rest is just hitting the computer every night for the next 28 days. Good luck fellow screenwriters!! BETH, love you.

As I begin writing my screenplay for Write Club, here's an article that is always helpful to me, from Michael Hauge. Hope you some of you, if you haven't already seen it, find it helpful as well, in the spirit of this website, as our leader Richard "RB" Botto, would say. http://www.storymastery.com/writing-style/dont-summarize/

Ready. Set. GO! I've been watching the steady stream of comments over the last couple of days and feeling the energy flowing from this amazing group. Now, I finally have a few minutes to sit down and take that first step towards my goal. First step is to remind myself what's already in the script. Keep that encouragement coming. Cheers!

Writer´s Write Club log... Earth-date... Nov 3rd, 2016... 8.24 a.m ... A cold, very cold morning in Northern Europe makes me wanna crawl back into bed. I´m up, zombie-walking into the shower after starting the most important thing I own (after my laptop) - the coffee-maker... After grabbing a mandatory cup of morning coffee, I sit down and start looking over the 53 pages I´ve managed to put down in two days. Not bad... Not bad at all... Good boy, Z!... I log onto holy website that is Stage 32 and read comments in this thread... I am home ... Keep going you guys! Today, I will push further with this new script but I will also step away from it after few hours and work on another one just to keep myself on track in every way... Look forward to Reading about your day as your day unfolds! :)

What a turnout! I had originally planned on roughing out an outline for a new screenplay. I just finished the Pro Series at ScreenwritingU (7 months, whew!) and am pitching my new screenplay BUT the pitch which they had me pare down to a short HOOK page in the class is getting turned down by producers that I pitch here on stage32 because it has too little info... SO I am rewriting the pitch for the 100th time during this month and hoping I can get it right with a little help from co-writers! It did have more info before the last critique. AH! I have written 2 books and a screenplay on this subject but condensing it down to a page gives me more trouble than anything. LOL If I get it right and have the time, I will also begin the new outline, BUT this takes precedence. Oh, the life of a writer!

By week's end, plan is to give each scene a title & description that tweaks the beat outline, and then a short story will sum things up. The process will also strengthen my pitch & a few scenes improved on the way. I'm glad that various posts prompted me to try this.

OR I may make a few changes to my new screenplay. I love the beginning and end, but believe it needs a bit of work in the 2nd act. It is inspired by a true story to which I own the rights (as author). I look forward to Sunday's posts and will have a rewritten pitch for Speed King! ready by then. Using the feedback I am already getting has been very valuable to the improvement of this type of writing. After writing 36 books, I am long winded once you get me rolling. haha

Just joined Stage 32 and this was one of the first things I saw on the Twitter page - great concept, I'll definitely see what I can complete before November's end. I'm still gearing up to draft my first feature-length spec script so I think the pre-drafting work is something to aim for, finish a second draft of novel would also be plausible, and hopefully I'll also be able to pitch some of my short scripts to a producer. Sounds doable

Hey, Beth! Hope you´re well today! I make you smile? In a good way I hope? I know I can be silly sometimes, haha. Even weird, especially for people that don´t know me, LOL. Yep, got some sleep which is not too bad and I agree with you. Today is a little slower day here as well. We gotta have those moments too, right? I managed to do some rewriting, I had a nice lunch, watched a movie (Bad Moms) - hillarious, by the way- and now I am back at my laptop for some more work.
1 person likes this
Lol! Yes, in a good way, Zlatan. ;) After all that writing I would think a slower day is in order! Me, I'm off to a not-so-great start, I guess? I've certainly made progress, yes, but the 'set daily goal' thing isn't working for me. It's actually bumming me out. So I'm switching to a weekly mindset. By Sunday I hope to have my rewrite at least half-way finished or more. Then I hope to wrap it up by mid-month and switch to my other project for the remainder of the 30 days. That better accommodates my general daily stresses of life and busy schedule.
2 people like this
Oh, thank God! You had me worried there for a sec, Beth. ;) I hear you and I´ve been there myself a time or two. You´re awesome even if the daily goal doesn´t get reached, you know? It´s better to enjoy that one page you feel good about then to write ten and you´re anxious about those afterwards. Think quality in stead of quantity and good days will come when you even exceed your own expectations.... I just read all this back and I sure sound like a zen-buddhist, weed-smoking teenager. LOL. Awake hours of life are the hardest thing to manage. So pat yourself on the back dear Beth and keep smiling :) If you need a helping hand, or mind rather, you know where to find me :)
3 people like this
Thanks, Zlatan. Much appreciated. You were worried? What? Haha, don't be! ;) As far as goals... Yeah, I'm an artist as well, and I much prefer a natural ebb and flow to working. Some people really respond well to set daily schedules, which is fantastic! All writers are different. And comparing yourself to others is just a really really good way to feel really really bad. So don't do it!!! For me, I'm working to find a good balance between the two: going with the flow, and daily discipline. ;)
3 people like this
Congrats everyone on your progress thus far! I am with Beth as far as finding a balance - the daily discipline has ebbed the last couple of days for me and that's okay...some days fare better than others and being in the midst of what would be analogous to Act 2 of a screenplay - I am tangling with my subplots to keep them moving and interesting as I forward the main plot. However - Luke is feeling rather needy this morning - this is what it looks like to have a 95 lb. German Shepherd in your lap when you are trying to work. Of course Luke is 9 years old which makes him an older gentleman of 71 in dog years so I give him a lot of slack...

Well, you truly are a Wonder Woman, Beth. Now, I get why you´re so busy. Can we see some of your work as an artist anywhere? Personally, I am not as blessed with creative gifts, LOL. There is a piece of legislation here in Europe (yes the whole continent) that clearly states that I, Zlatan M, am very much prohibited to draw, paint or create any form of imagery that isn´t in written form. LOL. That´s how much I suck at that. Once I painted a human being but it turned out to be an abstract image of... something else but definitely not a person. :)

Honestly, it's "life" that keeps me so busy, like most people. No super powers. Lol! ..Ummm, I had a website up for a while, but took it down. I've done some commissioned work, some shows, working in encaustics. But I lost my studio space because the business I was renting from expanded and they needed their whole building. Basically, they kicked me out. LOL! Anyway, because the material I was working in is toxic, I can't quite work with them at home, nor do I have the space or ventilation. So, I'm switching to acrylic. Long story short, I'm currently looking for/figuring out a new studio space. Anyhoo, I'll share something on my profile page at some point. ;)

Day 4 here in Oz, and all I want to do is get freakin' Final Draft working. It crashed in the middle of a rewrite last night. Well, at the end of the rewrite that it didn't save. And breathe . . . However, I usually think that when that happens it means that the next time I rewrite the scene it will be even better. What I previously wrote is in my head for the most part anyway. So again, failing forward!! And cue margarita. For breakfast.

I am a newish Final Draft user, so in part it could be me just not knowing stuff. It absolutely crashed without saving. However, I find when I write a draft, then close the app, I cannot just open it up and start making changes. I have tried looking into it, and found one way to make changes, but need to do some more research on it. Clearly I am doing something wrong as well.

I've managed to get to page 50 of my rewrite and ekked out about 5 pages on my new script. My goal is 2-3 pages a day so it will be done by the end of the month. The rewrite has to be finished this weekend, now that someone wants to see it, lol

Barbara - It happens to everyone from time to time. It depends on your OS and how old is your computer. Any newer machines have more than enough memory and processor speed to run Final Draft and 5 other programs at the same time. In default mode, I think automatic save was set to 20 or 30 minutes. I changed it to 10 and It works fine. If you upgrade your OS you will have a small problem if you want to save your file to PDF. In that case, open Final draft and use option RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR. It works. There should be a user's guide or some manual attached to software. As for making changes problem, I'm not sure, never happened to me. I hope any of this will help.

With FD10 and Windows 10, run as administrator is a better option all the time.

I got 39 pages of my one hour drama pilot completed. Now, onto the rewrites. What is the appropriate maximum page limit for a one-hour show? I thought it was around the 43-minute mark, but I could be mistaken. I've also written 3k words in my novel for NaNoWriMo.

Wow, that's fantastic, Izzibella! I believe the industry standard page count for a one-hour show is somewhere between 45 and 63 pages, but 50-55 is generally where you want to be. There was a discussion about this much further up within this thread. :)

Thanks to everyone for all of your support and motivation. I know the feeling Nancy, I'm struggling at a point in my new book too. I just need the characters to start talking to me again, do you do that also at a standstill? Beth, thanks for the clarification. I may need to expand on some parts to make the 50+ mark. Is it better to add more dialogue or more action to expand?
1 person likes this
Izzibella, it's really hard to say without knowing any context. I've read TV pilots with different page counts, some with act breakdowns, some without. It depends. Perhaps search for pilot script pdfs of various TV shows that are similar to what you are doing. ....Perhaps another Club member could better answer your question?
2 people like this
Izzibella, I was at a writing intensive workshop years ago and the speaker gave us a challenge to get our characters talking again if we were stuck. He said to put them in a completely different situation than what is in the outline of your book, and ask them how they would handle it. It’s amazing how that gets the characters ‘talking’ again. For example, give them a personal problem. A misunderstanding. A comedic situation. Anything that is different than what the book is about. For some reason that helps bring their voices back and you can go back to where you left off.

And Aray, my logline has changed with all 5 incarnations of this TV pilot. So, once I get this draft polished and very sure that it’s exactly what I want it to be, I will create a new logline and post it. However, I’m very intrigued by your logline. Sounds interesting. Love that you are putting a horror spin on it.

@Izzibella - In response to your question, "I know the feeling Nancy, I'm struggling at a point in my new book too. I just need the characters to start talking to me again, do you do that also at a standstill?" I just let it roll around in my head and look at other stuff to try to stimulate new ideas - sometimes walking away for a few hours is the best thing I can do. I might write steadily for several hours some days - other days I get up - watch an episode of one of my favorite shows on Netflix - go for a walk - talk to some people - surf the internet - read something - random things can create insight that gets me going again. Forcing it doesn't work very well for me when writing fiction. I am also an engineer and used to have a paid gig writing technical articles from a human interest angle for an online engineering forum and never had a problem meeting deadlines, but writing a full length novel is a different animal... Hope your characters start talking to you soon! Maybe you should start talking to them and they'll answer ;)

The novel will need several edits and redrafts, I only intend to get the basic SPG issues and some noticeable errors fixed, get it printed, and given out for a read this month. I think the planning and outlining of the feature is my main focus for this month, and I need to increase my workrate. This thread is mammoth but I saw that you're working on two feature scripts - sounds like you've also set the bar high, best of luck with that :)

And that got me excited even more about the current script I´m writing. Big wheels keep on turning!

Yesterday I rewrote a query letter, sidetracked and wrote a letter to the editor about a #$%@ referendum on our ballots (but it was a good letter to write), then did my first out-loud pitch to myself (which felt good but went long), then quickly typed those thoughts while the inspiration was still warm. :) Today I am teaching and the students are taking a quiz, so I will read screenplays as time allows. Open to suggestions for that!

All right, all right, all right... HERE. WE. GO. It's another day, my dear Write Club! Day 4! It's absolutely fantastic and exciting to see that everyone is making such great progress—so far so good! ;) Welcome Jeremy and Sapphire! We're happy to have you here! As we head into the weekend... Our first check-in blog will occur this Sunday, November 6. Remember participation is key! You must check in and "report" your progress: sum up your week; are you on track? what were your highs and lows?; how are you doing so far? what's next in your steps ahead? We need to see you all month long to track your progress. Plus the weekly, Sunday check-in blogs gives everyone ample opportunity to share more specifics (if you wish) about what you're working on; perhaps share loglines, etc. Also, Club members, please support and offer further encouragement to each other on one another's check-in blog posts by commenting, or answering questions, or sharing resources/information. We're in this together, are we not? ;) Okay, thank you so much everyone! Now let's keep going! Onward and upward!

I'm not an expert but I'm sure you'll get some concrete answers on this thread.

SIGNIFICANT PLANETARY EVENTS IN NOVEMBER THAT AFFECT CREATIVITY From half-way up Mt. Charleston - Tonight, November 4, is the peak of the Taurids Meteor Show. Definitely affects creativity....every time you see a meteor in the sky, you will feel a surge within your creative being.....be ready. The Taurids peak runs through tomorrow night. November 14 Full Moon. It's the Supermoon, aka "Full Beaver Moon," as the Native American Indians called it. A great night to create...especially if you live on land that was once occupied by Native Americans, and know how to connect with spirits. November 16, Leonids Meteor Shower peak. It runs most of the month, and peaks on the 16th. Again...meteors....creativity.....mmmmm......like prosciutto and cantaloupe. Take advantage!

I'm teaching full time, so, my goal will be flesh out the 2nd installment of what I HOPEwill be a franchise, the Crystal Dragon. The first movie is on my loglines page. THe second one is set in Uganda. I also need to get on paper the main points for ENTIRE series, (3rd set in China, 4th in India). This writing will be done in rough draft of what I want the children's graphic novel to look like (hope to release graphic novels and movies in tandem, this is a franchise vision). My goal will be to write at least one page every day, and to work hard-core on the week-ends, devoting at least one full half-day, probably Sunday afternoon. I'm lucky, because the characters and the plotline is already done in my head :) Thanks for the push, Beth & co!

Sunday Check in: Task one - write at least 4 blog post to have a running start in January beginning a blog. Results: 14 topics decided on and I thought about it A LOT. Well, a little. Task two - add 'Notes' to first 6 novels of Vic series. Results: Two completed, decided topics for two more. In spare time did rough first edit of a novella, received art for an illustrated story and started artist on next image. Happy with progress but not satisfied as I like seeing things in the finished pile. -- Is this where/how we check in or is there something else?

Checking in! I managed nearly 1000 words on an article concerning the AFM this week... not alot of words written, but lots of reading and research! Considering I have been blocked for months, this is great progress for me :) Thanks for this exercise, it's helping me recover my momentum :)

Okay, there seems to be some confusion... Today's Sunday Check-in Blog has not been posted yet. It will post around midday, PST. This thread is the ongoing, daily place to comment, share our highs and lows, share our daily progress, support and cheer each other on. The weekly Sunday Check-in Blogs will be posted on Sundays this month on Stage 32's Blog. The blog is where we check in, sum up our week's efforts, give a "report" (for lack of a better term), and/or share more about what we are working on—share loglines, etc (if you wish). Activity within this thread and posting/commenting/supporting others on the weekly Sunday Check-in Blogs is how we track everyone's participation and "see" who makes it to the end of the month. So hang on, the blog will post soon! For those of you who posted your Sunday "report" here, do post it on the blog as well. Remember participation across the board and all month long is key. And, again, this is not about self-promotion, but rather about our shared efforts in writing. Thanks Write Club! ;)

I pulled out a pilot idea I had several years ago since I thought this would be the push needed to finish up and write the bible. My way of writing is knowing where I am starting and where I want to end, all the rest is just typing away and getting all my thoughts/ideas down...then, I piece it together. So not exactly the usual form, but it does provide me with many possibilities, or new ideas for other projects. Apparently, I have the squirrel effect when starting a project, but I love it.

Hello Everyone - I had to duck out for awhile to take care of a bunch of mundane tasks unrelated to writing - but I am back. I have a blog I started last January although I haven't been faithful to it for a few months now because I have been channeling the majority of my energy towards writing my novel among other pressing responsibilities. That said, this is not a plug but rather, a way to say that I am grateful to be a part of our writing community and I want to salute each of you in your writing endeavors by sharing my very first blog post: https://novelwrites.com/2016/01/27/getting-started/ I hope it blesses you!

I've managed to get through one round of revisions on my old script I'm reworking and now I'm blasting through a second round before I send it to the two producers who requested it (nothing like a little pressure to get you working!). I got another five pages done on my new script, not as much as I wanted but it is what it is. I also have a freelance article due Wednesday so I've had to dedicate some time to that too.

Hey everybody! Pilot idea changed...it's no longer a procedural but it's a dramedy now and not a procedural. It's great. It just evolved as a I revised my idea and I'm happy about it. I'll be rewriting my outline and synopsis for it tonight and will be typing up pages this week (it started as an idea in a writing class I'm currently in)

Okay. Yesterday I mentioned a CLEAN page. It doesn't mean these pages won't need a small or even some drastic revision. It simply means I'm done with changing, adding or removing something (from that page, not the script) . Whatever that's called, writer's final draft or something else, fine by me. Now, the weird or the hard to answer questions. I have 3 scripts and in each one, the main character's face was never seen. To be honest with you, that's the whole point. The first script is called Scriptor Optimus. The second one is called Chameleon, which has a sequel. How do I even begin describing the main character? The only movie I can think of right now is Dredd (2012 version). In Chameleon I created a scene where one of the characters talks about this Invisible Person but he doesn't know his identity, just some details, what he was doing before, what he did... etc. The story part is not a problem. I know where it starts and how it ends. Okay, in Scriptor Optimus, one of the main characters is called John (the invisible one) but in Chameleon, no name, age, nationality... nothing. Does anyone else have or had the same problem?

Hello Stage 32 family, I have currently made it to my 100th page of the first draft of my Sci-Fi/Drama "Structure". I have 20 pages to go. Anyone in the Writing Club have any suggestions on how to take the filler out of the second, and possibly the final draft? Thanks.

Jeremy, Another Stage 32 member, Dan Guardino posted this a while back on how to write more economically, and it's really helped me in regard to taking out the filler. "Avoid large blocks of dialogue. Keep action lines to three lines of under and four at the very most. Write only what we can see and avoid character’s thoughts. Don’t describe every detail in the scene. Avoid describing character’s every movement. In other words paint your scenes with broad strokes and let the reader’s imagination fill in the rest. Avoid words that can usually be eliminated such as “are”, “and”, “there”, “it is”, “it's”, “to go”, “to say”, “is”, “to be” and words ending in “ly” and “ing.” You can usually eliminate first words of dialogue such as "Well", "No", "Yes", "Of course", "I mean", etc. Eliminate words like "hello", "goodbye", "please", "thank you", and "you're welcome" unless used for irony or emphasis. Avoid having your character ask questions but when they do don’t have the other character answer if the audience will assume what the answer would be. Replace the "to be" verbs with an active verb or eliminate them entirely. For example "She is in uniform" becomes "In uniform.” "It is dark outside" becomes “Dark, " etc. Make all your action immediate. Eliminate words like "suddenly", "then", "begins to", "starts to" and just make the action happen without any sort of temporal qualifier. For example: "Suddenly, he runs off." becomes "He runs off." "She starts to climb" becomes "She climbs."

Congratulations on completing a hundred pages of your first draft, Jeremy. That's great!!! But, as they say... Rewriting is writing. Lol! So not only do you need to edit, remove "filler" and make the writing terse, you need to go over everything, and you must be as objective as you can. You need to strengthen the structure, dialogue, characters, action, etc. Is the theme clear? Is the intended tone resonating? Does the opening clearly set up the world and characters in an engaging way? Does every element serve and drive the story forward? Is there building momentum? Is the writing too repetitive and redundant? Are there holes in the story? Is there dramatic tension in each scene? You must consider each and every character. Is each one fully developed? Is the protagonist active, not passive? Is the dialogue too "on the nose?" How can you better add subtext? The list of things to consider when rewriting goes on and on and on and on... But generally you start with story/structure and work your way through many many many rewrites, consider each and every element until the final polish checking for any last things, typos, grammatical errors, formatting issues, etc. Of course it's always a great idea to walk away from a first draft, take a break from it. Then when you return you can view it with fresh eyes. Any issues that you may not have seen before may then be more obvious. I hope that helps!

I have my rough draft script of Assumptions over at my Stage if anyone wants to take a look. Now that I got Linda's suggestions I have to go back and work on it once again. You're welcome, Izzibella. When Dan Guardino first wrote it, I knew it would be something I would want to use for each of my projects. So, I've copied and pasted it for myself for future references. :-) It's amazing how those suggestions can make dialogue and scenes so much tighter. Not to mention flow so much better. And Aray, I read your screenplay during October, and I liked the different take on the Ouija board. I thought The Thin Man worked as a demon pretty well. Your concept and execution of the story was what made him creepy to me. And Beth, thanks so much for your listing of helpful hints as well. I wrote 10 pages of the middle scene today. Way too much and the dialogue is about as bland as a baked potato. But, at least now I can go back in tomorrow and trim and polish and then spice it up. To me, that's the fun part. And if life allows, I will probably be doing that all week. :-)

Sure, but those weren't "hints." Lol! We need to be thinking about the larger story related elements and our specific execution—our voice—as well as editing when rewriting. It's all important. Every word on the page. ;)

In other words, when rewriting: remove yourself as the writer and look at the work as a reader. When you consider your own work from that objective perspective, all kinds of issues suddenly become apparent. Lol! ;)

Yes, 'hints' was not the correct word. lol I think I meant 'tips' but either way, I understand what you're saying. :-) And I completely agree. When I first started writing screenplays many years ago, I bought a book on how to be a screenplay reader so that I could see what they look for when I sent it to agents, who then turned it over to their readers.

The Sunday weekly check-in blogs are where we (Club participants) "check in" and "report" our weekly progress, and share more about our projects (if we wish). But we need to track participants across the board all month long to "see" who participated until the very end; the weekly check-in blogs help us to do that. ;)

Day 3 of me in this. I came to the conclusion that, if I am going to do my writing, a few things must happen. I needed to get it out my head that whatever I'm going to write it's not gonna please everybody. I need to go through my show's history and do a reasonable time jump. I just write it like it feels. And realize that, after all these years, I have been using the correct format for a teleplay all along. So last night, I got through the prologue and two acts. I think the block is broken.

Hello Everyone - I hope you are all off to a great day! Regarding Beth's wisdom: "In other words, when rewriting: remove yourself as the writer and look at the work as a reader. When you consider your own work from that objective perspective, all kinds of issues suddenly become apparent." This is so true - and the way I personally accomplish this is when I finish something - I set it aside for awhile. When I am in the midst of battle (writing) I am too emotionally invested in it so I need some distance. Even just a few days helps - or I could go as long as a month or two. This is never unproductive time because I turn my attention to other projects. Beta readers can also help with this task but you have to be careful in whom you ask, especially if you are writing to a specific audience. My current beta reader for my science fiction novel is a physicist and while I appreciate his comments very much and would be foolish not to at least consider them, sometimes he is looking for a realism that simply doesn't exist and wouldn't register on the average person. For example - he once told me that an astronaut would never have access to having a conversation with the Secretary of Energy (this occurs in my novel). I can choose to accept that, or I can evaluate it and say, maybe not normally, but it is certainly in the realm of possibility as far as me and my audience is concerned...and so in that particular instance I don't make any changes. But if he tells me that my physics supposition in a specific scene is completely ludicrous - yes - I will certainly tweak that part so it will be more plausible. I am also a teacher so one thing I will absolutely advise is what I tell all of my students - get rid of FLUFF!!!! Please don't write to fill in - if you are writing redundantly or off topic, you are not helping the story. Hope this helps - Never Give, Up Never Surrender! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fdcIwHKd_s

Bhimsen, I'm happy to hear you've had a breakthrough! YES!!! That's great! ;) "Writer's block"—to me—really isn't a "thing" but rather us battling our own self-doubt about whatever it is that we are working on. And sometimes the best way to work through self-doubt is to just work through it, go through the motions and write. Or walk away, do something else for a while, to gain a fresh perspective on whatever is causing our doubt. Often from that new perspective is where the solution reveals itself. Happy Writing! You got this!!! :)

@Randa - try to rise above it and keep plugging away. Even if it means putting your current project to the side and outlining a new one, one that resonates with how you're feeling, don't put the figurative (or literal) pen down. I haven't checked in since last week, but still on course with novel editing - hopefully have a second draft ready to print by next week. Outlining of the feature is taking a bit longer than I had hoped but I'm still confident I can put in enough work to have it ready to start drafting by the end of this month. Keeping plugging away everyone - best of luck

My fellow Happy writers, so sorry, I haven't been around here, in the last week or so. Been kinda crazy and busy, working the elections and other issues...I have been reading many of your great, encouraging posts, however. I finally hit the computer and got first four pages of my screenplay , "INFAMY" which is probably going to be my most inspirational and uplifting story, as those of you who know me, know I'm a dark drama writer. But, at least the scariest part for me, as Stephen King would say, is now over, starting a new project. Now, is just a matter of sitting down every night and must through to November 30. I turn off my Facebook and told everyone I won't be around until December 1 and I really have to stick to that plan. Good luck everyone as you all forge ahead. Happy writing. HOPE never quits.

I have a questions for all of my fellow writers, do too many plot twist in a script take away and distract from the basis of the entire story? I have some plot twist i have been planning out, but i do not want to so many plot twist that it gets annoying and have the audience see write through the writer's intent?
5 people like this
@Jeremy, I think it can depend on the genre. For example, you tend to see more in thrillers than drama. Consider your favourite film that has a lot of twists, how many does it have, does it seem to be overplaying them? Maybe write a synopsis of your script, inc the plot twists and get a few people to read it and get their views.
3 people like this
@Anthony, that is a great suggestion. I will write that out and show friends for their honest feedback. Thanks man.

@Jeremy... Anthony is correct, there are probably more in Thrillers then other genres... because you must thrill in thrillers... so probably the Protagonist should have at least 10, 15, 20 or more different actions to keep thrilling the reader/audience... to survive whatever he/she are up against... the twists would most likely be towards the end of Act II... I'm not sure exactly how many twists you'd have, guess it depends on your story.

Good evening, everyone. I woke up with a more precise logline swirling through my mind. YAY! But that could still change by tomorrow. Lol Then I reworked several scenes and now I’m not so sure I like them. Then I realized that almost all of my characters have double 'Ls' in their name--Polly, Lila, Bill, Allison, Skull---and realized I should change that. lol Then I decided to print out my revised TV pilot so I could edit the hard copy which always helps me find the typos….and my printer ran out of ink before the last ten pages were printed. Soooooo, I may take a break from actual writing tomorrow and spend the morning reading scripts and books on writing TV pilots, and also pick new names. :-) Jorge, glad to see you're back. Was wondering what had happened to you. Izzibella, Wow, writing another 5K is awesome! And Aray, I hope all went well at the dr’s office.

Hey, Jeremy. ...Yup, I agree with Anthony too; it does depend on genre. But it's really hard to say without knowing any context or your creative intent. I would just add, perhaps work it out through extensive outlining. And, sorry, I wouldn't rely too heavily on the opinion of friends and/or family, unless they have in-depth knowledge of story and screenwriting. Sure, they can share if they like what you are doing or not, but they may not be able to advise you in a constructive way: how to improve upon your work. It's often best to seek out opinions and advice from professionals. If you wish and when ready, you could also post your work on your profile page for general review from the community. Aray, I hope you're doing well! I'm happy to hear you're making steady progress. :) Sylvia, how goes the horror script? Just curious. LOL! :) Linda—and for anyone else who may find this useful—here's a pdf of Christopher Lockhart's paper on the construction of a logline: http://twoadverbs.site.aplus.net/logline.pdf. It is very thorough, breaks it all down, goes through a number of various logline examples, what works, what doesn't, and how to fix it. ;) I hope that helps!

@Jeremy - I love a really good plot twist! That said, sometimes I get a lot of different ideas that I could incorporate into my story but while I want it to be complex enough to be interesting, I don't want it so complex that the audience loses patience with it. I watched the first "Now You See Me" for the first time a few weeks ago and I was delighted at the plot twist that occurred towards the end - I was not expecting it at all and that made it much more fun. I think it is best to evaluate the risk versus payoff when introducing a plot twist - and does hindsight add plausibility? Do my subplots support the possibility? My current nemesis (Chapter 24) involves a plot twist which is why I am struggling with it right now. I certainly applaud your efforts - and as Beth has already said, be careful of whom you ask to provide critiques. Our craft is already subjective and asking people who don't understand the elements of story can sometimes cause more problems than it solves. That said, you have to be careful of the hypercritical reviewer as well...For my fellow creatives who sometimes get so caught up in the rules that they don't allow themselves to express what is in their souls - I love this quote: "The avoidance of error is not the same as the achievement of art." --Jeff Gerke Happy writing all!

Thanks for asking Beth & Aray... the class is very helpful. Not ready to really write the script though... learning the steps of the Horror genre. Trying to decide if it's going to be a slasher or grounded.

Beth, could you come to my house and FORCE ME TO WRITE? No? Okay. I'm forcing me. It's been a hella week at work, and I did do a very good job getting those two shorts all dandied up and submitted to the st32 short contest, but other than journaling I haven't kept to my promise to write at least a page every night on the children's graphic novel. I know what happened though, really. It was that short I dandied up. It was too intense. I think it might be the most intense scene I've ever written. It was almost traumatic. I screwed up big time at work, because my head just wasn't 'here'. I needed a few days to just live a normal life before delving back into the fantasy land. Anyway, I think I'm healed and ready to write. Ok. Going now.

@Aray, I like the idea of commanding him to blow his brains out. Maybe put a twist on it where he pleads with her, make it heart wrenching...like...'we've been friends since elementary school...remember when we used to (give a scenario that happened when they were kids) Maybe have her look like she's thinking about it, contemplating, like she's going to spare his life...then an evil laugh after a few moments of him thinking he's broken through to her...his hand starts to move towards his head, he knows she's using power to do this...he cries, pleads then...BANG she wills him to kill himself Anyhow, as soon as I saw your post above, that's what came to my mind...sorry if I overstepped boundaries and gave suggestions...I think you're story will be great...love the premise.

Well, I don't think forcing is ever a good thing... How 'bout encouraging? Lol! And I know what you mean, Sarah, I've been struggling very much this week (for many many reasons), but I am working on some heavy, intense stuff. It is draining.

Sorry I haven't been around this week. Been busy with the kids, the election, job interviews, & my wife had several days off this week so a lot of family time mixed in. Haven't been able to write but I have been thinking and seeing some holes I want to fix. Also jumped back into John Truby's book The Anatomy of Story to help make sure I'm not losing my story in the weeds. So I'm still working just not putting pen to paper...(not literally, I write on my phone on the CELTX app)

Re-writing this new feature has gone well thus far. I am quite happy with the script, actually. There is probably still room for improvement but I´m trying not to overthink it. Today, I´ll try to figure out a good logline and keep working on some other stuff as well. Hope everyone´s doing and feeling well! Have a great writing weekend everybody.

Good morning everyone! Thanks Beth for posting the link to Christopher Lockhart’s logline structure. Very helpful! Congratulations, Sarah on submitting the shorts for the contest! Brandon, good job on not giving up when life throws in a ton of distractions. Aray, if those are the revisions on FEAR, wow! I see you’ve been plenty busy! Congrats, Anthony on the rewrite. And good luck with the contests. And congrats, Zlatan on the rewriting as well. I can definitely relate to overthinking a story. That’s why I ‘finished’ the pilot yesterday and am moving on to the query today. Which are always the hardest things for me to begin. Once I get the first draft of the query going, I’m usually okay. But trying to collect all the important info and squeeze it into one or two pages….and that’s with a screenplay. This TV pilot query is a whole new challenge for me.

So around midnight last night I was explaining my plot difficulty on Chapter 24 to hubby. Just explaining it out loud helped clarify the issues involved. Haven't figured it out yet but I'm closer. I switched over to another project in the meantime - hoping to gain some perspective for when I go at Chapter 24 again. I am about midway through the second act on my science fiction novel and that is the challenge for me - heightening the tension and keeping my audience involved and interested...Hope everyone is making great progress - Happy weekend!

Thanks, Linda! I totally get what you´re saying. Often, I struggle with pitches myself, that is to contain them and still get across every important thing to the story. Hope that query of yours turns out as you want it to be. :)
@Dan - That list was good but is there any way around the part with Suddenly and Then. Just an example here. Five people stands near the entrance. Suddenly, one of them vanishes. Then, another one, then another one.. The last man stands, confused, looks around.... Any suggestions how to describe this without using Suddenly and Then.

Hi Guys, I'm a bit late joing the party, but I'm finishing up a long-time needed rewrite on one feature, and hopefully finishing a first draft on another. This while I'm doing writing assignments for courses elsewhere. So might be a bit ambitious, but going to go for it!

@Niksa, I understand your need to use suddenly and then. Think about why you're using those words. What emotional impact are you wanting to get across to the reader? Then find a way to visually describe it. Go through different scenarios on scratch paper.

So even though I'm in the midst of a very, very ugly estate battle with my brothers over my mother's estate (I won't bore anyone with the details but it's really horrific to be sued by your own brothers), I have been rewriting on my script -- sort of using it as therapy, if you will. It's going well as I've tightened up a lot of the structure and am now fleshing out some of the relationships. This is the part of my life I'm enjoying right now!!

Since I am done with the script I started back at day one of this crazy month and ideas are brewing I saw that there is a Comedy Contest on Stage 32, I thought to myself, why not give it a try. I don´t consider myself to be a writer of "funny pieces" but, why not try, and the Write Club is a perfect venue to get it started. So, with that said, I am off to start this one, today on this Nov 14. I will not have it as a goal to finish this one in 14 remaining days, but instead I will try and finish it by the final deadline of the Contest. Until Nov 30, I will try and do as much as I possibly can.

Honestly, this month is giving us some slams around the head... We haven't progressed in the extend we wish we would have ... We both came down with a real bad case of the flu 10 days each; still not fully recovered.. then it turned out that our mom needed to have surgery (last thursday)... because both of her hands needed to go under the knife, we're litereally having to help them (our mom & dad; who works full time) out with everything that needs to be done around their house (temp. moved back in to help out as well) ... so yeah.. not a great amount of progress so far, we're afraid... you have these times when you (literally) just can't even...

Good morning/afternoon/evening depending on where you are! Pitched my two TV pilot concepts to an Agent this weekend for his opinion on which to write. It's interesting, a topic I have the most experience on is a concept I've put off writing about since I started screenwriting. This Agent was over the moon about the concept and had more input on it than I thought. It's a concept based on and around the "sport" of professional wrestling/sports entertainment (I have over 16 years experience in the industry). He wants to stay in touch over it. Funny, he one concept I thought would be a waste to write about has more buzz around it than I thought. Maybe it's because I walked in on Doink The Clown and Greg "The Hammer" Valentine doing lines of cocaine and he liked that story! Now the fun of outlining begns.

Hi. I've been following along for a couple of weeks now, and am enjoying the comments. I have a question that I hope isn't repeating one someone else has asked. I am working on my first short film. I've written one or two scripts before, but never ones for film or TV. I have a question about how to address an activity that involves two characters, whose main goal is simply to drive the plot along and are not essential to the story. I have an auction taking place with a bidding war, but the key aspect isn't the bidding war itself but the final price which is revealed at the end. Do I have to map out the dialog between the two characters, or can I just say "Two people enter into a bidding war..."?

Hello everyone! Great to se you all being productive and awesome as always! I slowed down my tempo a bit and have written some 10 pages (2 Days work) on the new Comedy script and have also done some re-writing on other projects. I am also slowly preparing some new pitches and planing ahead for new steps to take as we begin a New Year. Always thinking ahead. I have surpassed every goal I had at the beginning of 2016 when it comes to my Writing. I hope for a successful next one as well. How about you guys? How has 2016 treated you in terms of Writing. Have you done all you hoped to achieve? What are you hoping and striving for moving forward into 2017? Would love to hear some thoughts!

hi, Monica, you have to wrrite everything that comes out of any actor's mouth. Auctions are really fun, so have fun with this bit of dialogue! If it's truly not important, than write in your action what the main character sees, example: INT. AUCTION ROOM - DAY The room is half-empty as Johnny sneaks in the back doors. We hear SCENE MUSIC, and MUFFLED TALKING as people bid on the final item, the wooden chalice. Johnny hears the final bid clearly. AUCTIONEER Sold! Three thousand dollars to the lady in the white dress!

Good morning everyone. Whenever you have writer's block, is it wise to just start on another project until you can break that wall of writer's block? Or is this too much? The reason i ask is because my favorite writer/director combo, The Coen Brothers said in an interview that they will start writing another project whenever they have writer's block, and come to that project whenever they have more ideas. What's your take on the matter?

Hi Jeremy. Do whatever works best for you. :) When stuck it's often a good idea to walk away and do something else for a while, gain a fresh perspective with a little distance. The solution may come to you while going for a walk or cooking dinner or whatever. Personally, I'm with the Coen Brothers... at times I do like to move on to something else, be it another script or just another project of some kind. It keeps you working while your subconscious figures things out. It's amazing to me how distraction can also be a good thing. Lol! It frees your mind. I hope that helps! :)

Had to take two days off to map out my next four scenes, which I just completed. Great advice BETH, when stuck, walk away, do something else. I lay in bed, most of the time awake since I suffer from insomnia and then the characters start talking to each other in my head and there's the scene or scenes played out for me as a stage play, then I hit the computer and write it. I'll have to admit I'm a bit behind as I just completed page 27 and I want to make this one 83 pages at least. Will see. Good luck fellow Happy writers as you move on. HOPE never quits. Oh, I did take a class ON Demand yesterday, on Pitching. Thanks, RB for the gift.

Very sound advice - it's obviously subjective, some people are adamant to stay focused on one project, but it's not something I prescribe to. After developing a project to a certain point I always have it on standby, and eventually, I'll pick it up again when the moment's right. For the past few months' I marked November as 'the month' I would start to outline my first feature script, and thus far, I've put three ideas on the shelf / standby, because I don't feel that there's an organic flow to the process. I've since revisited a short screenplay I've written this year and I've seen an opportunity to develop this and another two - three other short screenplays into a feature. That's my aim for this month - outline this project as much as possible, and if all goes well, start drafting in December. Novel redrafting is beating along steadily. If I can get another draft completed, printed, and handed out for some notes, and I manage to outline the feature, then November's goals will have been met. All the best everyone, keep plugging away.

Another question: If you're submitting your script to one or more of the contests, is it a good idea to post it to your profile as well?

Monica, as long as your work is copyrighted, you should 'get it out there' in any way you see fit. I personally use stage32 as my go-to place for the latest edited versions of all my spec scripts. Even on my personal website, I just have the loglines for my specs, but direct visitors to go to my st32 loglines page to download my specs. I would advise against posting your work on the Blacklist until you actually win a contest. I made that mistake, and now I can't update my specs on the Blacklist unless I pay another $50USD to 'activate' them. My fear is that if someone powerful did get interested in one of my specs, they might go to the versions on the Blacklist, which are terribly old. It's easiest to just keep each spec readily available in ONE place, and for me that's the stage32 platform. There's also the Coppola's zoetrope environment, but personally I prefer ST32.

Thanks to this extra November boost I was able to get to this point. I am very grateful to 'BENSONHURST' as well for creating this Stage 32 site. Alright! Still alive! Going strong with the comedy script attempt as I am about 30 pages in. Got a little stuck about page 25 I have to admit but pushed through it somehow. It is hard being funny I gotta tell you. Especially as I don´t want to be just funny as I am trying to have a depth to these characters and have them be inadvertently funny, in a way. No wonder I never actually wrote a comedy before.LOL. I am leaning towards a rom-com I think. :)

Hello again. Here's a short summary how I worked on the script I chose to write this November: After days of preparation I began my script and am now writing about 10 pages a day. So, I think I'll get the so called "shitty first draft" done by end of the 30 days. Great feeling. Good luck for you all! #AmWriting :)

Greetings writers! For the past week I've been fleshing out characters and plotlines for my new pilot script. The outline is becoming the longest and most detailed I'veever written. I think about the story, visualize scenes and camera angles as the story plays out. Makes it easier to write and see where the story is going and jot down plot points/ideas that make sense. If I can't picture it clearly, I don;t write it. So much time and so little to write! strike that, reverse it!

Spent my weekend in LA with rounds of meetings that were exhausting but productive. Now back to my current script, which I'm still hoping to finish by months end!

Love reading all your comments. Inspiring. I will be pulling all nighters (if my neck pain let's me) so I can wrap first draft by 30. Aray, good luck on your plans to move to California. Fellow writers, keep the hope and move ahead. Peace.

Just joined this site and looking forward to reading some of the scripts you guys been working on. I started a new script this summer and hoping to finish the rough draft by the end of November

@Aray, exciting for you to be planning a move! Have you started job and apartment hunting yet? Having just got back from LA, I'm pretty sure it's not a place I want to be full time. Fun to visit but so damn exhausting. The traffic, ugh! Over an hour to drive 17 miles one night. So brace yourself for lots of traffic jams, lol.

@Aray, when someone says to me they've always wanted to do something, I say make it happen. You only get one go around on this planet, as far as we know. Make it count.

@Aray - why do you hate writing loglines? I really love writing them. It clears your mind for what your story is about and you have to bring it to the point. It's the best way to exercise how to tell your script in one sentence when you pitch.

I agree with Elisabeth Aray. Log lines are an essential element in getting your story sold as well.

I find loglines to be my Achilles Heel. It's an art. So many varying opinions on log lines and their length. It's just like a script, always going through rewrites.

Good morning everyone! Well, just when I thought I was going to be working on the other screenplay, I received the edits back from the query. And it appears that I need to cut oh….50-75% out of it. lol So, back to the keyboard. Looks like that delete button will be smoking today. Hope all of you are still on track and enjoying the process.

Thanks, Aray. I will need it. :-) And congratulations to you for finishing your screenplay!

@Aray - you used the word "hate" in your reply to David Levy... and I just feel quite the other way and enjoy them because they give me a certain clearness. But anyway.

Loglines are a crutch to some. Hard to find the right words to sum up a script in 40 words or less. Or is it 35? 45? 62? Omaha Omaha! Hike! Little light laughter. But there are many who find loglines the hardest part. Stage 32 and other sites have webinars and classes specifically for loglines. Some concepts are easier than others to craft. We all have our strengths and weaknesses. Guess all it takes is practice.

@Aray, I'm doing a class with John Truby at the moment... The first thing he had us write is the Premise/Logline for our script and then he critiqued them all... looking for the 'gold' in each one. A great hook, makes for a great script.

Aray, agree, loglines take practice, reading loglines of popular produced films help me a great deal. I read a while back, to think of the logline like journalism 101: I want the who, what, where and when in one sentence. If that makes any sense?
@Aray... John Truby is having 50% off sale this week. Maybe check out what you're looking to get.

Yeah, loglines are difficult to write... but I'm learning to love them. Lol! Aray, did you see the Christopher Lockhart link I posted earlier within this thread?—how to construct a logline. If not, here it is again: http://www.twoadverbs.com/logline.pdf. Enjoy! ;)

Been able to do just a little bit more this week, not nearly as far as where we hoped we'd be but such is life. Interesting thing happened yesterday when a director emailed us out of the blue saying he "heard we were writing a specific short" and that he was interested in reading it because it fits the profile of something he's looking to shoot very soon, so that currently takes the biggest slice of the priority cake for us, as you can imagine.

Just popping in for a bit. Been silent here recently. Just busy with work and life. BUT, I'm writing. I should have a draft of my pilot finished if not by the end of this, then definitely with the first couple of weeks after this ends. And, in addition to working on my pilot, I actually started coming up with ideas for features also (I've been very inspired by Moonlight, The Lobster, and a host of big AND small indie films that have come out this year. Random: People You May Know (JC Falcon), Other People (Chris Kelly), Jean of the Joneses (Stella Meghie sp?) and Hell or High Water (David MacKenzie) are MUST sees for everyone who loves movies! Jean of the Joneses may be hard to find since it just came out a few weeks ago and premiered on TV One BUT I'm sure it's out there somewhere....) This whole month has been quite inspiring for me and actually DID get me out of the rut I've been in for a while regarding writing. AND I think I'm getting closer to the particular genre(s) I want to write in....

Hi All from out of The Netherlands! I am a bit late to the party, but here I go....I have read the discussions about loglines and would welcome some feedback to help turn-up the sizzle of a logline for a Spec I've written, a Bio/Action-Adventure adapted from a book.
Thanks, your thoughts/feedback on how to punch it up, is appreciated!

Want to finish strong and walk into the next year even stronger with a lot of going on. :) But first things first. Last week of the November Write Club and my comedy script is moving along. Slowly, but still, moving along.

Well, here we are. Making our leftover Thanksgiving sandwiches. Looking at the final 4 days of this "Happy Writers Club'. I think all of us whether we finished a screenplay we were working on, or started a new screenplay. We all have one thing in common. Our love of this craft. To tell stories. Some make people laugh. Some make people cry. All of us want to have the experience, strength and hope to move forward. And thanks to BENSONHURST, Beth, the entire dedicated Stage 32 staff and the wonderful fellowship in the lounge we can be truly grateful that we are part of one of the best creative communities since The Bard had the gang over for Mutton and Ale to talk shop. And whether you are new or just coming back. Welcome you are in for the ride of your creative life. CANARSIE out!!

Steven, that sounds so exciting about the parade balloons. I think my granddaughter would love it also! Thanks for the tip. :-) As far as writing goes, I’m still revising the query from the notes I received on it. I took a few days away from it so I could see it with fresh eyes. Cutting it down without losing its tone and concept has been quite a challenge. In the meantime, I’ve signed up for a contest, and will be polishing up the script one more time (or ten) before submitting. I can’t believe there are only four days left in November. This thread has been so inspiring that I hate to see it end.

It´s going alright! :) I am at the midpoint of the Comedy scipt I´m attempting at. Emphasis highly on "attempting". How do you know you´re funny when you´re writing? LOL! I laugh Reading somethin back to myself but how funny is it really? OH God!... Anyway... As with everything else, the truth always reveals itself, LOL. What I can say, I sure have a lot of fun writing this one. Yesterday, I wrote just one single scene the entire day. Yeah, because I re-wrote it like thirty-fourty times! And it was hillarious. Is it funny now as I have kind of agreed with myself on what the scene should be? Who the hell knows! :) I had fun. Novemeber of 2016 = SO MUCH FUN :) Thank you guys and keep working! No slacking off these last few days! :)

Sylvia, so glad to hear that writing in your head counts. Because I've definitely been doing that all week. :-) Zlatan, I know just what you mean about 'attempting' to write comedy. Finished the (technically) first draft of my latest screenplay. Oddly enough, I hate the title but love the content. What I mean by technically, is that I was redressing scenes and issues from the first and second acts while still writing the third because I had to fix earlier parts that had become loose ends. I hate the title but I can't think of anything else catchier that fits. Hopefully everyone else in the club is doing well.

Well, life is all about priorities and adapting your situation accordingly when it turned out we weren't gonna be able to do much on the "bigger" screenplay we were writing for personal reasons (see previous update in this post), we decided to turn our attention to a short story that had been stuck in our heads for a while but didn't get the right hook for ...so we did some brainstorming and the short film "stuck" (see loglines & also script revolution) was born... the funny thing is that we already got a request for it (award winning short film director!) before it was even fully finished, which was kinda fun! Fingers crossed and hope everyone had a productive month

I will not finish my latest script in the next two days but I will keep writing and plan to try to get in at least 10 more pages. My goal now is to finish it by the end of the year and get it out to my contacts in January. Which is fine because nothing much seems to happen in the industry during the holidays anyway. I did get my old horror script revised and put it out on Virtual Pitchfest, and got some read requests for it. Also got to meet with a manager of a fairly big agency while I was in LA this month and met up with my friend/mentor who is a working screenwriter. Also managed to get a couple paid freelance assignments done. So overall it's been a success. I wish I could finish this script I'm working on, but there are only so many hours in the day. I do know I'll get it done by the end of the year tho!!!

Hey you guys! Looking good from what I see :) I must confess, I didn´t write a lot today. Proof-reading was the order of the day on my end. I have so much material and drafts of all kinds so I kind of cleaned out my "library" and proof-read that what is current. There are always some typos and misspellings in my house. Stupid fingers! :)
@Sarah-Are you doing your own sketching/drawing on that graphic novel or are you collaborating with someone?

Does writing academic papers count for time writing? I need to get back to book and script work...this stuff is soooo boring, but has to be done.
@zlatan: on a random note: our minds went totally Goonies on "Hey you guys!" :) proof reading to us is just as important as the actual writing process, matter of not letting people know exactly how tired/bad/... (or drunk haha) you were when writing the initial ideas/draft @Aray: We've always found the process (existing) novel-to-script easier than going from a novel-concept to a script. When the novel exist, it's a matter of reducing the "explainy" elements down to the visuals, whereas when it's more a concept to a novel, you have all of these ideas in your head and it takes so much more to condense to a multi-character 100 pager (especially if you're in the mindset of a screenwriter it's more difficult to suddenly think in novel-type blocks of text)... we wish you all the best!

Good evening everyone. It seems that all I had to do was say what my writing schedule was last week, and it immediately went out the window. I’ve spent a lot of time playing hurry up and wait. Or more like wait and hurry up….wait for family members to leave so I could hurry up and write during my brief moments of quiet time. (Husband, and two sons all work on different shifts---gets a bit crazy when some are eating dinner at the same time the others are eating breakfast.) But, I did catch up late last night with actual writing. I revised the query…again. And I’m down to 50% of what I had, but still not short enough. And I polished the TV pilot and finally submitted it to the Stage 32 comedy contest. Tomorrow I hope to finish the query and then the search begins as to where to submit it.

Hey all... huge congratulations to all of you, new and old members that were successful in all of your endeavors during this time and those of us that didn't quite make it. That's okay too. I'm so happy to have participated this year,... what a family we are!!! I loved getting to know all of you that participated and shared your dreams and goals with the rest of us. So open and honest. You know who you are. I love you so much. RB, we should present a Stage 32 Oscar to Beth for her contribution and dedication to us... getting us the writers who struggle every day to get our butts down and WRITE. Yes, it's difficult... life can get in the way of our dreams, that's okay, that's life... family first... but what a journey I've had this past month, reading all the comments on this post about what's going on in your space... the struggles, the roller coaster ride we live. Yes, life does get in the way sometimes... but the journey is what it's all about. Love you all! Please keep in touch. Please remember... It IS a journey. It IS a process. We all have our own process. NO Judgments, please. We can only do what we can when we can. Thank you, Beth for being there for us. Your inspiration and dedication to spur all of us on... was out of this world. I will never forget your support to each and every one of us. I can't imagine your sacrifice...that you are able to get any work of your own done during this time... thank you so much. It's almost time to make our lists for next year's goals. Maybe we can share our goals for next year between Christmas and New Years. And then kick off the November Writer's Club at full speed next year. Best to all. Hope Santa finds you wherever you are in about 3 weeks. :-)) I'll be heading down to Tampa right after Christmas for a week... mini holiday. Happy to have a meet-up. Let's connect if you're there. LOL. Good night.

Great! It seems many would like to share the fruits of their 30-day labor so other Club members can check it out. But let's please be mindful to not let this slide into "self-promotional" territory (sorry, I know, I know... LOL!). Perhaps simply let the Club know that you've posted something on your profile page and give its title. That should be enough to guide people to your work, a few clicks and we're there! Also perhaps comment on Club participants' logline/script posts. Let them know you took a look! ;) I'm really looking forward to reading your work! Thanks again, everyone!

I find it to be a good, strong and interesting story line but written in an overly wordy fashion. Some of the words you've used are a bit off for the American market – like “trolley” for what we call a “cart” but that's pretty minor to what I see as a good strong story. Well done.

Thanks, Anthony C. ;) And what is generally preferred in all the S32 craft and business forums—they're meant for topic discussion, talk about craft, etc. Of course you may self-promote on your profile page and in the promotion section "Your Stage," sometimes "Anything Goes" is okay too.

It does Sylvia, they're pretty interchangeable.

Good luck to you all in your next steps!
Sylvia – generally it does refer to a streetcar. She used the term in her script referring to what we call a beverage/food cart being pushed along an aircraft aisle – I've been on many flights but I've yet to see a steward push a streetcar along the aisle. It just points out one of the difficulties of writing for the international market – I've tried writing for the UK and Australian film markets – I can't do it because I don't speak their version of English. I notice that you're in Canada; do you push a shopping cart in the grocery store/supermarket, or a buggy, do you put your infant in a baby buggy or a pram, do you drink from a drinking fountain or a bubbler? Hopefully you see what I'm trying to say. In the US, the first person to read your script is a young intern in the agent's office and if the kid doesn't understand it; your script goes to the junk file! Many of you will argue with that – but that's just the unvarnished truth. Sorry 'bout that.

Hey guys, let's please steer this thread back to Write Club. Thanks! :)
You're welcome, Aray! Thank YOU! Thank you and everyone for being a part of Write Club. All of you make this happen! This effort and all who joined in inspire me as well. I'm diving back in today on my work. ;) I'm also going to click around today and next week to read Club members posted work. I hope others do the same!—whatever you can, perhaps read just a few pages. And please remember to leave comments on profile pages. Let's continue to support each other. Write on! :)

How about we stop arguing on how to argue and move on? :) There must be more November write club members who want to share (part of?) their experiences this november with us.. so turning this over back to you.

Sylvia—amazing post, by the way! We rather do become family, don't we? And a Stage 32 Oscar for little ol' me? Aw, shucks, how sweet! LOL! But really it takes a village to motivate, inspire and keep those creative fires burning. So thank you, sweetie, for participating, contributing, and being there for all of us. Love you too. ;) And again, big thanks to everyone! Love y'all! xoxo
Hey, Dan G, I'm so happy to hear that we helped to keep you motivated. And thrilled to learn your projects were a success. Congratulations on a job well done, sir! :)

Sooo... now that it's December I think I should update my November Write Club status. Hmph. I'm not sure I fall into the "success" category or not but it was tres cool to read about everyone's progress and indeed, success. Although I technically didn't complete anything I made significant progress on the play I'm co-writing and did indeed make progress on the dark comedy feature I'm mapping out. I wish I had more detailed pages to share but I just wanted to thank everyone here for simply being inspiring. And a big "Woo-Hoo!" to Beth for just bein' there. Write On!

Just decided to scroll through this thread from the very beginning and I found it amazing how many good posts that I actually missed, when I thought I had been keeping up. Even though we are no longer in the November challenge, it's still very inspiring and motivating to go back and read the quotes, and guidance and progress. :-)

I'm reporting in...been real busy with work and life so I didn't complete my tv pilot on schedule. BUT, I will have it done soon and will spend December rewriting and editing that. BUT, I really enjoyed this, and I definitely will do it again next year!!!!

Just an update that I finished the first draft of my November write club script, after suffering holiday and illness delays.
