If you write horror, but you have a great idea for a comedy or drama, should you not write it? Art is art after all. While most of us have a particular style of writing is that style limited to one Genre. Perfect examples of the rule breakers would be Edgar Wright, or Tarantino and let’s not forget George Miller who wrote Happy Feet (1 and 2) Babe (1 and 2) as well as the Mad Max series. You wouldn't say that to an actor/actress so why writers?

Expand commentRead comments and it appears "voice" is the common thread, followed by style and genre. Although clichés, know the genre well enough (what the reader, producer, lit agent etc. are expecting to see) so when you bend the rules it comes across as fresh, or "a new twist to an old theme." You should know your voice and style. Then make any genre your own.
@Guy Well said
Lot of responses on this one, was hard to keep up but, the consensus seems to be good story telling is good storytelling. Now we just need to get the rest of the industry (the gatekeepers) to figure that out.
I DONT WRITE ANYTHING IF I HAVE NOTHING TO SAY. HATE WASTING PAPER

Expand commentI must be a 1000 people because I'm comfortable in whatever voice I want to write about. My first short is about two Asian women, my next about two African American brothers and my next feature about a girl from India. I love these different voices and characters, and they love me back. One genre? Not me.
That's so great, Steve! Good luck!
Congratulations!!
Great news. Congrats!!
Congratulations! Always good to see forward momentum.
Congrats!

Here is a short interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDM6QwT-S-E ¨The Fever¨ is a scripted drama series with an extremely diverse cast. Amber Choe is the owner of a high-end matchmaking company that specializes in matching interracial couples. Her lover of 5 years, Veronica, just left her so Amber puts herself back into the database that creates havoc and mayhem. This show has it all, sex, betrayal, power, breaking stereotypes, diversity, and even murder. There are twists that you will never see coming and scenes that will demand your full attention. The production company that is the creator of this show is Poyzen Productions Inc. The Director is the talented Lorenzo Anderson, who has directed many different projects. Oh and let´s not forget that he also play an important character in the show with some of the hottest sex scenes with his on-screen wife. So you want to know where you can watch the show? It will be on local NYC cable (Time Warner, Fios, RCB) every Wednesday night at 9:30pm. This will, of course, be the censored version. We will also be putting it on Vimeo on demand, Amazon, Google Play, Itunes, and even Youtube. As of right now, the uncensored version is on vimeo.com/ondemand/thefever We hope you love it! Here is a short trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eyhEjrhyOOc
that's pretty kick ass - glad you're stepping out of the comfort zone and proving that women of color can be more than their stereotypical labels :)
Awesome work!
Thank you for the support! Can't do it without it.
LaShawn, you are so right. It is something that we can change if we do it together. Bryan, what is your writing style like? Do you have samples? We have the storyline, but there are always added surprises.
Great work, Sondra!

Surprising how hard it is to get an agent or manager to read your work, even when you have lots of credits to your name.
