It was 2015 and I was working on an oil rig in West Texas as a roughneck, working 12-hour days in scorching heat for 28 days in a row. At any given moment I was physically exhausted, had torn muscles and aching joints, was wet with mud and oil, and experiencing a level of pain that would send most people to the ER. Though my body was under extreme stress my mind was disassociated from the experience, day-dreaming of sci-fi worlds, and the characters who inhabited them. I was 30 years ol…
One of the most uncomfortable experiences that anyone can have is pitching something that they have written to those who will either accept it or reject it. Just like delivering a speech for the first time, pitching a screenplay can be quite nerve-wracking especially the first time that you do it. All too often, a good screenplay does not get produced because the pitch was not delivered in the right manner. Why We Get Nervous? Why does anyone get nervous when they are presenting the…
If I am ever in a funk, it is usually because of comparison. Comparison is the thief of joy (Theodore Roosevelt) and it's so true. The minute I begin comparing my ability, my talent, my looks, or my journey to another, I'm automatically spiraling into negative thoughts, which will put me in a funk. If I notice I am doing this, I take a break from social media and focus on practicing gratitude. Social media can be soul-draining at times. It's a wonderful tool for sharing art, thank …
Feature and television projects from diverse writers, and stories with traditionally unheard perspectives, are essential to art, entertainment, and advancing the conversation in a way that has largely been ignored by Hollywood. However, these days, much to our contentment, things are changing. With the powerful evolution of new voices in both features and TV, projects like QUEEN AND SLIM, THE FAREWELL, ATLANTA, CRAZY RICH ASIANS, BLACK-ISH, POSE, LOVE SUGAR, INSECURE are thriving and lea…
Happy Sunday Creative Army! Here's hoping you had a happy, healthy, and creative week. I've got some fresh coffee in hand and some amazing content coming in hot. Let's dive in, shall we? First up, The Hollywood Reporter has an all-star roundtable all about creativity featuring some of the biggest names in entertainment. This video features Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton the musical, In the Heights), Donald Glover (Atlanta, Community, and hip hop superstar Childish Gambino), Damien C…
Over the last few years, I’ve consumed a lot of crime fiction. Between researching novels and pilots, I’ve read mysteries (recently I’ve gotten into Preston and Child), studied real-life forensics reports and procedure, and I’ve watched thousands of hours of crime television shows. And yes, I did say thousands. I’m fairly certain that’s not an exaggeration. As a writer, I’ve learned I’m a lot like a sponge. I need to absorb content in or…
I remember sitting on my porch in December 2019 and saying to myself, finally, 2020, a new start. I think the majority of the world pretty much felt that 2019 could take a hike, that is until 2020 really hit us with a Pandemic. Being a filmmaker during this time has struck fear within our industry, as well as the rest of the world. So, the impending question is, how do we get back to set? What does that look like as the bans are lifting and work is kinda moving forward? I’m here …
I did not actually mean to write a pilot based on my book, which is a very real thing that will be out in the world on August 25. As in, you will be able to buy it from your bookstore or request it from your library, and you will be able to read about all of the terrible sex I’ve had and the time I bid on a chandelier on Ambien. I will need to put at least three states between me and my parents on August 25. But the state of discomfort reading it pales in compar…

Good morning, Stage 32 Creative Crew! I hope you have had an awesome weekend and carved out some time to write, create, connect, inspire (or be inspired), and move your career forward. To help in these endeavors, I want to share a story which I find particularly inspiring. I am a big believer in doing the work. What does that mean? Write all the time? Yes. Take criticism? Yes. Get notes? Yes. Revise? Yes. Network? Yes. Be entrepreneurial? YES. I am so proud to announce that…

Friends, family, project collaborators, social media connections—I’m sure your network is abundant. But in all likelihood, you’re missing out on a mastermind group—a creative support network of individuals who guide each other through professional challenges. Mastermind groups are well known in the business community, yet rarely used by filmmakers, writers, actors, and other artists. Personally, I think it’s time creatives start leveraging this idea for th…
