I honestly believe the path to success is driven simply by action. It doesn’t matter how amazing/terrible you might be at something; without action, you won't experience any growth, and you won't progress towards your goals. Your dreams will never be realized and you’ll go through life always wondering what could’ve been. It’s not enough to want something in this life. Nobody is going to give you anything; you have to be willing to fight for i,t and you have to d…

Do you have a screenplay that didn’t get into a competition? A film without distribution? An idea that you just don’t know how to make a move on? I have been in all these positions and more than once. So how do we move forward as artists when the world seemingly continues to push back on us? This is the big question and I hope to provide some insight based on my real-world experience. How I work hard to "fail up" as a filmmaker. For anyone who has read my previous blog posts…

Hesitation is the death of progression. Twelve years ago, I was walking through the halls at Lawrence Technological University when I came upon a flyer for a student group that put on play productions. With no experience and a lot of curiosity, I quietly stepped into their Thursday night meeting nervous as hell. In fact, nervousness is an understatement as I was scared shitless. Thinking back, this small and simple decision would set the foundation and help shape my life for the …

It was lunchtime on a Wednesday afternoon. Finished eating at my desk, I sat in my car, in a nearby parking lot, about to crack open a book that would help change the direction of my life. A book so powerful that it would open my eyes, helping make things clear that I once couldn’t see. A book on screenwriting. Reading Screenplay: The Foundations of Screenwriting by Syd Field was the first time I had been introduced to three act structure and specifically the hero’s journey.…
If I am ever in a funk, it is usually because of comparison. Comparison is the thief of joy (Theodore Roosevelt) and it's so true. The minute I begin comparing my ability, my talent, my looks, or my journey to another, I'm automatically spiraling into negative thoughts, which will put me in a funk. If I notice I am doing this, I take a break from social media and focus on practicing gratitude. Social media can be soul-draining at times. It's a wonderful tool for sharing art, thank …
According to the definition, failure is a lack of success. It’s interesting that dictionary.com defined it in this way. A lack of success. It’s seemingly inevitable to experience a certain level of failure in order to succeed. When you think about it, any successful filmmaker would also be considered a failed filmmaker. Is there a level of success one must experience to no longer be considered a failure? What is the measure of success? One hell of a question. Thinking back o…
