Six Degrees of Stage 32, AKA - It's a Small World After All

As a member (or soon-to-be member) of Stage 32, you've no doubt heard of the game that started the current age of show biz networking: 'Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon'. As many creative, support and production people as there are involved in film, television and theatre, it is truly amazing how closely we are all connected. This business is often just as much skill as it is luck, but it is also who you know. Connections are paramount. For example, take a look at Harrison Ford.…

Breaking Through

One of the great pleasures running a site such as this is watching a member of the community rise up, take control of their destiny, and find success. Stephen Richard Melling was one of the first members of Stage 32. I remember when he joined. He stood out. He asked questions. He made contacts. He posted information and initiated conversation. He was selfless in his approach. Other members of the community took to him immediately. Nearly nine months later, Stephen has completed his fi…

I'd like to thank all of you who have written or left comments regarding my interview with Indie Source magazine. Many of you have expressed some technical issues using the viewer and have asked if we could post PDFs of the article. And to that we say, "Yes we can". "Mr. Stage 32 With Richard Botto" - Indie Source Magazine [PDF] To view a PDF copy of the entire Summer issue of Indie Source click here. My thanks to Executive Editor, Chris Parker, for makin…

The Cutting Room Floor

A quick piece of housekeeping before we get to today's guest blogger. Stage 32 was recently named Script Magazine's Site of the Week. My thanks goes out to the entire staff. We're honored and grateful. RB

First Impressions

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of speaking with Jeanne Veillette Bowerman at The Great American PitchFest in Burbank. If you aren't familiar with Jeanne, get to know her. She's a dynamo. Insightful, brave, selfless, and relentless (in the most positive way imaginable) are just a few words that immediately come to mind. I have never met a person who, having come into contact with Jeanne, didn't walk away impressed and enlightened. As a successful screenwriter and pro…

Bernie Comes Full Circle

Thanks to Stage 32 member, Lisa Leyva, and Millennium films, I had the opportunity to screen Bernie, starring Jack Black, ahead of it's release. It's a fantastic film with a Fargo-esque vibe. After blowing audiences away at the Tribeca Film Festival and selling out theaters in limited release, Bernie expands to over 100 theaters this weekend and further still next weekend. I highly recommend seeking it out. It's indiefilm at its finest. And, of course, you'll be supportin…

Fade To Black - Now What?

Julie Gray returns this week with a follow up - although it could certainly be called a prequel - to her guest post, Competition Season. The subject prompted hundreds of questions, but the ones asked most by 32’ers was some version of: How do I know my screenplay is ready for prime time? Julie offers her invaluable insight below. I thank her again for her generous contribution to the community. As always, Julie is available for followup questions and remarks in the comments s…

50,000!

This world is but a canvas for our imagination. Henry David Thoreau Seven months ago, when we launched Stage 32, our wish was to make the world a little smaller for those whose calling was to create. Talent knows no borders and exposure shouldn't be limited by geography. We wanted to eliminate all excuses, all the reasons one makes when pulling the plug on a life-long dream. We wanted to spark creativity, drive desires, and ignite the collaborative process. We wanted to set f…

Babz Buzz - What's Hot

Literary agent and Stage 32 member, Babz Bitela, hosts an outstanding podcast for screenwriters called Babz Buzz. As entertaining as it is informative, Babz's show is a must listen for screenwriters of all proficiencies. Whether it's tips on honing your craft, breaking down the beat points of successful scripts, or discussing what's selling and why, no one has their finger on the pulse of the screenwriting community like Babz. On her most recent podcast, Babz was kind enou…

Even more power of networking...

There's no greater success than when the primary strategy of a plan is served. As Curt and I drew up the blueprint for Stage 32, we had many goals, but paramount amongst them was this: Help creatives find work and, by attrition, get projects off the ground. Over the last few months we've seen no less than a half dozen projects launched exclusively employing Stage 32 cast and crew. Further still, thousands of members have made connections that have led to casting opportunities,…

The Power of Networking

If you're a screenwriter, I highly recommend bookmarking the Selling Your Screenplay blog. Head honcho, Ashley Scott Meyers, has written over 20 screenplays, nearly all of them optioned or sold. I've been a reader for years and I can tell you firsthand, his opinions and insight are invaluable. Ashley was kind enough to ask me to guest blog for SYS. Check it out here: The Power of Networking. As always, I'm open to questions and remarks in the comments section below. …
