In today's world of independent filmmaking, the VOD, SVOD, and AVOD distribution strategy has become a more substantial option for many filmmakers. We've brought in 20-year executive Mark Padilla, who has worked in the worldwide distribution side of the independent film industry and has overseen the distribution and release of more than 100 films during his career.
The world of film distribution has dramatically changed in just the last few years. During the pandemic, we saw the closure of major cinema chains and independent theaters throughout the US, which led to the rise of consumers staying home to watch movies. As a result, fewer movie theaters are booking independent films with very few exceptions. The cost of properly releasing a film theatrically doesn’t seem worth the marketing spend to promote the movie. What is a filmmaker to do? Video On Demand (VOD) has become the new normal for the world to watch movies. But is all VOD created equal? Is there a path that filmmakers should take as they approach VOD? What are the differences between TVOD, SVOD, AVOD, Fast Channels, OTT platforms, and is there now something called LVOD? A filmmaker should understand the difference between a Pay Television channel vs an SVOD platform and Free TV vs Fast channels or AVOD. For filmmakers or investors to maximize the potential revenue of their projects, they need to understand the different ways films are being distributed in today’s market.
What makes a film successful on VOD is not always the reason why a film might succeed or not succeed theatrically. The marketing strategy approach to VOD is different. The path to recoupment of revenue is different. A successful filmmaker or producer needs to understand the release options available to them. What is the difference between the release “Windows” of a movie’s life? The filmmaker needs to understand not only who the players are in the distribution business but how they operate differently from each other. To ensure the best deal, a filmmaker needs to know what the different VOD platforms expect the type of terms each platform offers, and if the platform wants exclusive or non-exclusive rights. A well-educated filmmaker also understands the other “wrap-around” and ancillary rights that can.
