There’s been a lot of uncertainty surrounding theatrical exhibition in the streaming era, but AMC’s latest earnings report suggests that audiences are coming back, slowly but surely.
The company’s revenue rose 35% to $1.4 billion, and its net loss narrowed dramatically to $4.7 million. AMC and its European counterpart Odeon (including Nordic Cinema Group, UCI Cinemas, and Odeon Cinemas) are benefitting from a post-strike theatrical rebound, driven in part by titles like A Minecraft Movie and the anticipation of a strong slate through the rest of 2025.
According to CEO Adam Aron, this is “a combination of a recovering industrywide box office, and the undeniable fact that both AMC and Odeon are executing so well in so many different ways.”

What this could mean for indie and mid-budget films:
- Theatrical distribution may remain a viable (and potentially growing) option, especially with a strategic release window
- There could be increased investor confidence if box office growth continues into Q4
- There’s still room for strong independent titles to break out theatrically
If you’re in development or preparing to pitch a project, these shifts in market data could impact your financing strategy. What’s your current take on theatrical vs. streaming as a path to ROI? Are your investors asking different questions than they were a year ago?

If you know specific ones I would be pleased to know. But I am looking. The Ontario Arts Council has a special fund for artists with disabilities. So I will try that too.
