I've mainly been a screenwriter my entire career, but I tried to produce two movies way back. A few things I didn't know about going into it were how much work it takes to produce a movie, the terminology (which made things harder), and the legal and financing sides of the business.

Thanks for the warm welcome and for sharing these resources! I’ll definitely be diving into them.

Filmmaking is a world I’ve been drawn to for a long time, and now that I’m stepping into it, I’m seeing just how much there is to learn—especially on the producing side. It’s one thing to have a vision, but another to navigate the realities of turning that vision into something tangible.

You mentioned some challenges you faced when producing—was there a moment where things really clicked for you? Or something you wish you had known before stepping into that role?

You're welcome, Michael Moss. Things really clicked for me when I learned about producing and the legal side of the business. I realized years later that I should've tried to make a micro-budget feature film instead of a big-budget movie and a low-budget movie. It would've been a lot easier to make a micro-budget film.

The Swedes have a word for that type of setting David Dicaire, it's "mysigt". Great backdrop for some prolific creativity, do your thing, man!

Heyyy David!!!! I’m here in the metro Detroit area of Michigan and our snow’s melting into rain buuuuut below freezing temps are on the way. But it is the perfect weather to write in…I have a revision that I been working on that I’m almost done with and I tell the more you rewrite the more you fall in love with your story.

Hey Nathan Waire - awesome seeing you here on IYW. Agreed that nothing is impossible. Beyond cool that you're gearing up to shoot your first feature. I made an almost no-budget indie film in New York at the start of my career that really opened doors and elevated the work I was able to do next. Excited for you. And New Jersey is rocking these days with studio growth and its great to hear about an indie film riding that wave. On the dog trainer, I'd recommend reaching out to the film commission. They're usually super supportive of indie projects and I actually spoke with someone in the NJ film commission a few weeks ago as part of Stage 32's Certification Program and he made a point of saying that they want home grown talent to thrive. They want to build relationships with local fimmakers. And they'll have lists of folks nearest to where you're shooting that I'd bet includes animal/dog trainers with some set experience. Just a suggestion. Keep us posted on your progress with the film.

I have a question. Can it work in certain circumstances to cut a screenplay up into a comic book; you first release issues -- X 1(X=title) , X 2, X3 -- then "when the story is complete, you re-lease the Trade Paperback cominging all the issues into a single volume." ?!

I heard creating a comic book series should be like creating a tv series, episode by episode. I almost think the reason it doesn't work is the same as when you try to turn your novel into a screenplay, one on one. Or your screenplay into a tv series, one on one chronological, cutting your screenplay up into tv episodes. But are we not talking about a different animal here? For me it feels like it could work. The endresult being engaging, and having a natural feel.
