**the ultimate lesson-learned session**

We Need a Plan B — Writing/Screenwriting There is a part of my creative life that existed long before IMDb rankings, agencies, or character breakdowns — a quiet current beneath everything else, a second heartbeat that kept going even when the camera wasn’t rolling. That part is writing. For me, writ...

How to Punch up the Comedy in Your Feature Film Script. Webinar with Jonathan Tessero

You’ve finished your script (congrats!) or you’re stuck on a pivotal scene (never fear!). You love spending time with your characters, rooting for their wins and mourning their losses. You’re happy with how they deliver exposition and are proud of how subtext and desire drives every word they say. E...

Good idea or not?

I know how long it takes for words on the page to finally appear on the screen, if they ever do, so I intend making Arigni 1 available as a novel early in 2026, with Arigni 2 coming late 2026 or early 2027.

But I'm not sure. Is this a good idea or not?

CJ Walley

It all depends on your goals. I have published all my feature specs as books. That's been great for all my friends who want to read them. It also means my story is out there, rather than locked away o...

@CJ Walley I'd like to have it available but what gives me pause is what if a producer or exec becomes half way interested in helping to sell a series pitch but then says "I see you published it as a...

I cant see them caring that much about poor sales on a novel that's not with a publisher or been marketed hard.

I've spoken with producers who have been presented with "best sellers" that have less than a dozen or so reviews, and I think that looks worse.

David Taylor

I went off publishing my books - it takes too long - and am now adapting them into features/TV series. I have eleven but had my publisher go bust and with it went my Contract for eight of the books. I've fallen in love with TV pilots too.

Wave Your Wand

Happy Monday! I have a hypothetical I was thinking about this morning, and thought I'd open it up to the group: If you could "wave your wand" and pitch a script/project to an ideal person who would it be? Why? Would you feel prepared, or would you be riding the struggle bus the whole way there? BONU...

I don't know anything about contemporary pitch practices. I've been on both sides of the table (writer & producer) during the past half century but none recently. The only advice I offer is to relax,...

Slug Lines - Love 'em or Leave 'em?

In a recent review, the reviewer stated, “…transitions like “Fade in/Fade out” are generally discouraged in modern screenwriting.”

This got me to asking myself, should these transitions be removed out and left to directorial discretions? My current thinking now is to leave them out.

Would love to kno...

Mike's spot on. Don't overthink it.

I use transitions like "FADE TO BLACK" or "DISSOLVE TO" to signal a larger than expected time skip which is pretty much standard from what I've seen and read. Other than that "CUT TO" is understood to before each new slugline.

Anna Marton Henry

For TV spec pilots: I don't really care if you use FADE IN / FADE OUT, though it does take up precious page space. CUT TO between scenes is not needed as it's obvious, and also takes up tons of unnece...

Also, to CJ Walley 's point, I think pretty much all pros don't care about formatting so long as it's not so bad that we don't understand what you want us to see & feel. When I comment on formatting,...
