It says a lot about the quality of writing when the comedy transcends decades. I still laugh at Malcolm in the Middle and Everyone loves Raymond because the characters are so relatable.
Bazinga!
Any writers from Kenya??
Fun Fact: "Lucy, you've got some 'splainin to do" was never said in the show. It was just the way their dynamic was remembered.
GOOD LUCK @SHEILA
I always wondered how those catch phrases come about. Are they planned and written in the beginning of planning the series or do they come out organically in the writing and just stick.
Writer from Brazil here, hello everyone ^^
Hi, i'm from Budapest Hungary
I gravitate towards single camera. I tend to be more dramatic and pathos based in my humor so it lends itself to the format.

Expand commentShows that have more than one camera aren't necessarily multi-cam. Parks and Rec, The Office, Modern Family are all considered single camera show despite the fact that they have multiple cameras filming at the same time. A Multi-cam is a static set mostly, a lot of times with a live audience, but mostly an indoor set with three cameras. But it's not really the amount of cameras like he says. I lost points on the blcklist.com by saying my show was a multi-camera but it was actually single. This is where I learned this.
Love the burrito wrapper story. Now I want to go back and see if I can find it. Lol.
"As a writer, all I do is eat" LOL!
Wow I need to go back to see this burrito wrapper
thats more of a Charlotte thing but I get what he means lol

GREAT CHARACTERS.
Great characters.
GREAT CHARACTERS!
Great Characters!
anyone ever see a show called Flowers. Ended much too soon but was amazing with it's characters.
GREAT CHARACTERS!
GREAT CHARACTERS!
People think Im funny when I'm not trying to be funny all the time. :D
Yay CLEVELAND! All people from Cleveland are funny
HAHAHAHAH George Costanza!!!
It's Always Sunny masters this. The whole cast are masters of their own misery
i love Seinfeld
We all know a George! Can't see the forest for the trees but is so strong in their convictions all you can do is sit back and laugh
Hi there from L.A!
Seinfeld has some of the most iconics characters of all time! The series about "nothing", a great masterpiece!
oh my goodness... had no idea why i loved Seinfeld
now i know
Absolutely .. George Costanza was first person I thought of as the cause of his own suffering, schemer but incompetent, "ladies man" wanna be but a shlub .. on and on ... yup laughing at the deep flaws :( :)
bad things happening to bad people = gold
Seinfeld has some of the most iconics characters ever! The series about "nothing", a classic worth do watch again even today ^^
Watching Seinfeld for the first time I started to think of it as it's all just one person and the 4 characters are like all 4 personalities in one - like multiple personality. I don't know. That was thought that popped in my mind after watching a few episodes...
George lacks self confidence that often puts him in embarrassing moments
lol mean to children lol dont do that
George Costanza = Daffy Duck - Jerry Seinfeld = Bugs Bunny
I still remember the time George shoved his way out that old folks home in the middle of a fire
Moral bankruptcy aside, George is the character who would probably feel most at home in I Love Lucy. (Speaking of, if you want a show where the characters cause their own suffering...a hundred t
times in a row...)
Hi everyone, just took a minute to say hello. I'm from Oak Park, CA
So many incredible George moments: Summer of George!
LOL! I love the "GREAT CHARACTERS" posts to confirm the vocalization.
or reacting to their antics being recorded by an onlooker and put on twitter
FYI, this is a great seminar, so many incredibly useful bits, thank you!
lol snort..
Jerry on stage: "And what's the deal with iPhones? I don't call anybody, I get the calls! All those telemarketers! Why not call it youPhones?"
Gotta log off... it's 330am here.. .will watch the video tomorrow..
Hi, I'm Keji from Lagos, Nigeria
Kramer would probably ruin the iPhone by accident and sell it to Jerry for half the price.. Haha
lololol i love this sit ex on seinfeld
Laughing at such spot-on "Seinfeld" character predictions.
I would watch this episode of Seinfeld!
I enjoy the Twitter that's einfeldToday that just figures out how to put them in modern situations.
Loving this situation exercise bit!!! This is something new that I will definitely adopt moving forward :D
Joey from Blossom is sooooo funny :-)
Wow, this is a great webinar! We're at the Seinfeld Situation Exercise and I've learn SO much so far....
You shouldnt assume people are dumb just because they seem dumb.. sometimes... lolol :D
Patrick Star would surely eat his own iPhone
Listening in from Seattle

Loving this
The understanding is always my favorite episodes
This is really informative! I thought this was going to be superficial, but Vijal actually goes into depth and gives specific and meaningful examples that are interesting, creative, timeless, and easy to track.
This is wonderful! Vijal is engaging, informative and dynamic.
not able to see his whole screen
Waving my hand at the laptop like a game show host. Hello from Ireland

This webinar is fantastic. Great content. Amanda Toney how much is left ? I have to jump in 25 mins.
what changes in a 4-act structure?
He makes everything sound so simple! Right?
Great webinar
This is all soooo good!!! The examples are super helpful.
Julie Stern - Yes, there will be a Q&A at the end of the webinar.
He is making this sounds so easy.
He's very relaxed and personable, not surprisingly, really enjoyable yet focused and informative, love it, this is great detail for those of us who write features but have yet to write for episodic TV format.
I "purchased" this webinar a week ago but just now I've register, after already beginning watching the webinar. And it doesn't appear in purchase history!
Every once in a while the universe smiles and we/I can smile back with genuine appreciation. This is just what I needed. VijaI is amazing! I could listen to him all day. Amanda, thank you, thank you!
Hahaha!!! Great examp.
They did this running past the speed meter gag in The Office (US) too - as a cold open!
Daniel Stuelpnagel I agree. Very much helped clear up a lot of things.

The genesis of that writing example is hilarious
Amanda Toney I am registered with the same email I joined this webinar, yet it doesn't appear in my purchase history. Why is that? I want to be able to go back and watch the recording.
I think I am finally in the lounge.
YES!!! Love Community!!!
Awesome Stuff
Two weeks ago I pitched to an amazing writer/executive producer, wrote three episodes of GOT and an Oscar nominated movie. She told me my story tonally ... not funny... used MOONLIGHT as a comp so I was thinking this topic--comedy--not so relevant for me right now but I think this is extremely helpful in some essential understandings that are relevant across all genres.
I think the slides are not passing with the speaker :O
British comedies do fly by jokes really well
@artwasem lol i had a lot of trouble figuring out how to get into live lounges during initial broadcast until today.
Interesting note, @staceymalone

The Laugh Point
Love the "laugh point" idea. So many shows could benefit from this!
Well that didn’t work
Lawrence (as in "of Arabia")
Hearing you talking about Laugh Point: Theres stopping after a Laugh Point... will you be addressing theres the essential Follow Up joke. Its like a chaser, but, again, timing is everything. People need time to absorb the original joke, in-out... wait... follow up. <br>EG: Im making this Peanut Butt...

OK not a great joke, but you get the idea.
The Red Carpet walk on the ice rink AKA "Get on Your Feet" bit from Parks and Rec is one of the funniest things I have ever seen
Thanks Dan
"I want to get this at the end," says the guy lecturing about "that's what she said" jokes...
@mosesakempta - I absolutely agree. I couldn't breathe I was laughing so hard at that. And, when the carpet just ended. Hysterical.
what about "and she hates sandwiches". it's a hat on a hat but kinda funny :-)
This is all gems! Love it
Nils Underdem`s comment: what about "and she hates sandwiches". it's a hat on a hat but kinda funny :-) Yah! A chaser joke. Its like a dessert on a meal of a main joke. Makes it more satisfying.
from Nigeria here.. our flatbreads are up to standard Vijal! Lmao..
For further examples of "Reactions can be the punchline," check out almost any episode of Archer.
Orange you glad I didn't say banana?! This is a classic.
Rule of 3 is SO important! Do y'all pick up on it when you watch it, too?
why is it "K"? I went to the bathroom
clown in the windshield
Normal. Normal. Crazy. RULE of 3.
OK I get it now
"K" is funnier = my mind is blown!! Very nice
Canadian?
Touche on the Canadians
K - anadian...
Yah - that works. XD
ahhh can tell is funnier w k sounds
Great discussion on sitcoms and comedy -- will Vijal be going over anything specific to streaming (the title of the event)?
Personally hoping showrunners believe in "K is funnier" during staffing season.
Interesting
Interesting..
That was funny @KimoKoshi
Yes! The rule of 3 pertains on every structural level, top overview on down to the most granular of story beats and punchlines, essential nuggets !
Jerry Ashinyo from Accra, Ghana
Damn... who else wants a burger now?! LOL
Krusty the Clown is the king of comedy K's.
Where do I sign the contract with McDonalds?
Vijal is dropping so much knowledge and doing it all with humor. Great session!!
Big vegan macs…
Hollie Michelle Harper - the "K" sound makes the statement funnier in dialogue. If you are torn between two synonyms, chose the one with the "K" sound. Not stone, but blocK. Not head, but Cabeza. Not hit, but knocK.
This is one of the best screenwriting webinars I've attended, and it's not ended yet. So much invaluable knowledge is being shared and Vijal is such a great presenter.
My favorite "episodic show" joke -- The Simpsons' "real Principal Skinner" episode, where at the end (after Springfield collectively renounces the Earth-shattering revelation that "Principal Skinner" isn't who he says he is), someone notes that they will never speak of this again.
This has been so informative!
A good example of a character evolving and then devolving is Nate on TED LASSO - SPOILERS getting built up to become a coach in Season 1 and then betraying (and graying) the team in Season 2
@Jennie that's a great example...I loved how that arc played out.
Agreed, @Jennie - and I love how that is SPOILER opposite from Jamie's arc, where he leaves and comes back.
Ahhh that's how the "fish-out-of-water" inherently has dramatic tension
Los Angeles too
But what about Judy Winslow...?
loved Urkel
Say that about Stewie the baby in Family Guy!
Urkel had catchphrases FOR DAYS...
Do Character arcs work in Episodic shows? I feel like its the beginning of the end of an Episodic series, because that eventually drops the original dynamics that made it work. Expand commentDo Character arcs work in Episodic shows? I feel like its the beginning of the end of an Episodic series, because that eventually drops the original dynamics that made it work. Like in Frasier with the story of Niles and Daphne,, when they started being a couple, it killed that hilarious push-pull dynamic of NIles unrequited, secret love for her. In Seinfeld, they didnt do story arcs much, and the show kept being fresh (most of the time). Even when George and Susan were going to get married, that didnt really change the dynamic or the essential, comedic nature of George, and eventually they resolved the arc by killing Susan off and restoring status quo. So should a show have character arcs over a season or seasons?
Urkel had catchphrases for days. Amazing
Yeah thats when I stopped watching Blackish, it was to much for me to handle.
I'm thinking of the success of shows like "The Golden Girls". The characters were so specific and rich.
Lol repeat jokes
But actors get tired of playing the dumb character and demand their characters get college degrees and now be more smarter.
A running gag
Pretty pretty pretty good
If I'm understanding this, you should've stopped saying "repeat jokes" after 3 times, yes? lol
JOEY DOESN'T SHARE FOOD!!
Al & Peggy Bundy's marriage dynamics. Classic!
Nate actually becomes a hateful character in T.L
@Corinne, arcs work in episodic shows for the episode they arc in. Going back to The Simpsons and its 30+ year run, Bart and Lisa learn to love each other all the time...and then go back to getting on each others' last nerve. (Ditto for Homer and Ned, even.)
^ yes! Loved that show and the fact that they didn't really change too much for the better or worse
So much great info and great teacher too
We look forward to their personalities clashing as they confront their challenges. They were so consistent in their quirks; we knew who was the strategist, the naive one, the sexpot, the manipulator.
Hi, Greg from Greece. Thank you. I love the comedy break down
Really great webinar! Thank you Vijal, Netflix and Stage 32!
This is such a great workshop, amazing work Vijal, Stage 32 & Netflix :)

Thank you for this! I am a cartoonist and I am interested in adapting my comic series for television--this has been really helpful!
As a Stage 32 member since last August, I started off this new year with several Pitches and also Script Development talks with Executive, it has been so worth it and absolutely no way I could connect with these industry specialists except through the power of network available through Stage 32, I am an independent writer in Baltimore and I value these opportunities very much, THANK YOU !!

Thanks V so much, thanks S32 & NF
Vijal is a fantastic screenwriting instructor. Great instructional format, too.
Thanks. Great brainstorming :D
Vijal this was amazing!!! Thank you soooooo much for your time and genius and ideas! Learned so much!!
What would be the difference in your approach to a standard tv show vs a limited series?
This was great. Thanks
Thanks so much!
Thank you so much for your time Vijal.
Thank you soooooooooo much for this.
Thanks so much Vijal!
This has been fantastic.
Thanks Vijal - great webinar!
thank you so much for sharing <3
Thank you so much Vijal what a lovely heartfelt wrap-up, and thank you so much to Stage 32 for an amazing session today !! Love it
How do you adjust your story structure for a 4-act structure?
This was Awesome!
Thank you very much! This has been GREAT!
Can you talk about the difference between muti-cam and single-cam as pertains to 2 acts vs. 3 acts? Thanks!
Can a pilot be strictly driven by voiceovers?
Excelente enjoyed this very much.
Who is the best person to email at Netflix if you wanted to submit a script? What is the process like?
I loved the bit about using similes and metaphors to make a joke relatable. How do you incorporate a pun joke that's funny in another language or a joke that's funny in another culture to an English script?
Thank you Vijal. Any tips on writing a logline for the pilot or episodes?
Thanks to Amanda and Vijal for this. It's great to have my country mentioned as an example, too :-D
This was one of the best webinars ever joined!! Awesome, took a lot great inspiration! Thank you so much!
The Writer's Room is sooooo worth it!!!
Thank you so much,Vijal. That was so helpful!
Loved this class
Thank you Amanda and all at Stage 32. Vijal is amazingly great. Very good presentation. I'll be in touch. Have to leave now, sorry. THANK YOU SO MUCH>
Yaay Thank you!
thank you, it was amazing, thank you Vijal !
Questions: How many characters is too many or too few and should you always try to pair them off?
Wow thank you great gift
Thank you so much
I can't click on the link
1)Does the cultivation of a plot come before fleshing out characters? 2) For a pilot, do you write smaller B and C stories if you’re using the pilot to introduce characters. 3)Any advice for turning a one character comedy play into a comedy TV show? I presume it’ll be single cam
I HIGHLY recommend the Writer's Room, y'all!
Absolutely, the Writers' Room has been amazing and well worth it,
The Vault videos, Executive Hour and numerous programs,
I've been a Member since August of last year, this program has boosted my confidence and craft so much, I feel that it has saved me years of solitary study time by being able to connect with this special cohort of artists, love it !
Question: Does a multi-cam always need to have a laugh track? Are there multi cam examples that don’t have a laugh track?
Very engaging
Can someone reshare the link for the free month?
Hi from Boston, MA Vijal this was so awesome because I can't tell a joke if my life depended on it!!...OK may be if my life depended on it...
Thanks so much for this great learning session, Vijal! Thanks for moderating, Amanda! Great stuff!
I asked this earlier, but was wondering if catch phrases are written and incorporated in planning the series or do they come out of the writing organically with each script/show?
How do you navigate a major character/actor leaving a show? ie: Two and a Half men
Question: Awesome work all :)
Am In the wright place for the free month? In the writers room?
Can you talk about Cold Open And Tags?
right..
totally understood the answer but forgot the q :D
Is there any pilot show written for both single n multi cam and how
QUESTION: For those shows that are nor entirely Comedy, nor Drama (such as After Life, Shameless, 90210); Do you think we could apply many of the Comedy concepts or do they take more Drama arch, structure, and situations?
Could it make sense to write a multi-part pilot, like a three episode pilotÉ
im in for Space Twins
With half-hour dramedies becoming more popular like "Harlem" and "Insecure" that is surrounded by four friends, is it important to build B & C stories around each friend and what is an effective way to do that?
Thanks - gotta run. But I learnt so much. Peace!
Thank you Amanda and Vijal! A lovely learning session!
Question: do you have any tips for the logline of the pilot? Thank you!
Are cold opens still necessary for comedies?
id def watch Space Twins. and im actually not a big showwatcher. have missed more shows than anyone ever trying to write scripts ever
Logline is how long for comedy shows
thanks Juan
Are cold opens still necessary for half hour dramedies? Also, when there's a show like "Harlem" or "Insecure" that have four friends but are written as half hour dramedies, is it important to build B & C stories about all of the friends in the the pilot. What is an effective way to do so?
mmm very helpful Q regarding B and C in pilot
That was Carl Reiner? I use that quote all the time.
Chris Mack addressed same Q in his pitch webinar. International shows translate well even when specific to region.
Su Sol - In the webinar, click on the CHAT icon at the bottom of the screen, and that chat box will have the link to the free month of the Writer's Room.
Felt like i should watch Squid Games but did not want to watch it until hearing amanda say that.
Are shows with short episodes easier to sell? Are nowadays Multicam shows meant to be shorter?
When you are writing a comedy for younger audiences, how can you work the character’s trait that is not entirely negative but still funny? When you are writing a comedy for younger audiences, how can you work the character’s traits that are not entirely negative but still funny?
Can you walk us through a day in the writer's room of one of your shows?
I LOVE Kim's Convenience, and I'm a black female. Write and it will find an audience globally.
This webinar has been the best webinar on TV writing I have ever experienced! Kudos to Vijal Patel! Thank you Netflix and Stage 32!
Can you walk us through a day in the writer's room of one of your shows?

I'm a person with interests and desires and problems that a lot of people can relate to - through a different lens.
Thanks - if Vijal could look at this question after zoom: Any advice for turning a one character comedy play into a comedy TV show? I presume it’ll be single cam. Also best way / advice to learn how to write full pilot script if your used to writing smaller scenes
Can you please provide certificate for these webinars or workshops

Expand commentYour discussion about writing cross-nationally, like from Bohemia, there is the universal, human experience, but I often wonder how much international cultural differences in approach affect a story getting picked up. For example, how I would write to Canadians is different from how I would write to Hollywood. For example, in Canada, we can find low-key very funny. From here in Canada, US humour as much balder. So if Im going to write true to strictly Canadian culture, I can be more subtle. I keep getting the feeling that this wouldnt grab the balder market of the US. I think that become a significant question about writing cross culturally.
Yes, I know Schitz Creek was a hit, but thats balder writing from a Canadian standpoint. So these cultural differences doesnt mean it wont take off, but there is so much more that other cultures have to offer and Im not sure that gets picked up.
Does Vijal have a writing mentorship/fellowship program?
Thanks to all involved!
Amazing! Thank you for your time and expertise!
This was really great, worth staying at till 10:30 pm here in the UK!
Very Good. Thanks

Pretty Epic times.. Vijal was extremely simple and gave me hope that I can do this too. What passion. Thank you.
Many thanks Vijal and Amanda. That was great.
What specifics can you share about writing for a streaming platform vs. an episodic network sitcom? For example, what main points should I hit for a serial 30-min dramedy pilot that would improve my opportunity to be picked up?
Also - the best places to send and sell your script
Thank you for your time! 7am over here. good night all <3

Thank you so much for the webinar, I do appreciate all the speakers today. and soon I've been doing my Romantic-Comedy series for Netflix. It's been an honor to be a part of this webinar, again, Thank you so much.
So far, the Netflix + Stage 32 Present webinars are some of the most useful I have ever watched. Great stuff!
Thank you so much, Vijal and Amanda! Really great information :)
Nice
My favorite parts of Vijal Patel's workshop were the importance of clear characters and characters' dynamics, the fact that characters are always funny when they themselves are the cause of their own suffering, the exercise of wondering how characters would react in any situations, pairing opposites, the formula examples of Gilligan Island and Blackish, and the rule of three.
I'm really late watching but just to say this was awesome!! I learned so much, thank you so much Amanda Toney and Vijal. It was so informative!

Expand commentThanks again for putting together this fantastic webinar Amanda Toney and Vijal! I love writing comedic moments, and I think this whole webinar series has been some of Stage 32's most inspiring and enlightening pieces yet. With that in mind, would it be alright if I asked you some follow up questions?
1. What do you think are some of the most common mistakes that new comedy writers make?
2. How common are writers' blocks for comedy scripts, and what are some of your go-to techniques for overcoming them?
3. I struggle a lot with writing dialogue for ensemble casts because of how difficult it can be to give each character their own unique POV and speaking style - especially when I cannot bounce ideas off another writer. Are there any tips and pointers that you could share to help writers that are in my position to tackle writing for ensemble casts effectively even when the writers are working alone?
4. What about when you are creating characters who are supposed to be either quite smart, witty, and unpredictable? Does it make it more difficult for you to predict what your character is going to do very easily for those reasons, and what are your methods for overcoming this kind of writing struggle?
5. & are there any tools/techniques/checks-and-balances writers can use to check to see if the endings for their conflict are ending in a natural and/or entertaining way? Even if they don't have easy access to another writer or a test audience to bounce their ideas off of?
Fantastic webinar, thank you for hosting this.

Hello from Colorado - working in New Mexico.
As a novelist, one of the many things that really works (from what Anna has been saying) is that the writer has to know everything about everything, but the viewer doesn't have to - and if a viewer does, them being proved right (or prescient) is usually a very enjoyable event.

Hello from Cape Town, South Africa my question is what is the best advice for writing from personal experience? / actual life events
Do you think that streaming learnt from wrestling or did wrestling learn from streaming when it comes to endless storytelling?
How would you pitch a series of different 60 min films? Example: Black Mirror, Twilight Zone, Amazing Stories?
This is incredible...thank you for putting together this webinar. Watching from Gaborone, Botswana.
Great seminar! Thanks

Does every subplot need to resolve by the end of the pilot?
Another Great Netflix - Stage32 Webinar. An overwhelming amount of information! Will have to listen again!!
Thank you so much for this workshop, it was really useful! My question is: Would it be possible for a pilot to convey a genre, and slowly through the series shift it to another genre? The secondary genre comes from the background of the setting and overtakes the original one. Thanks again!
Thank you so much Amanda & Anna! THIS WAS GREAT!!!

Amanda Toney I'm SO bummed, I had to work and could only stay on for the first hour - so I didn't get the surprise at the end. Can you tell me what it was?
Greenbrier, Tennessee!
I got off of the webinar before the end, Lisa Isaacson. I wonder what the surprise is also.
The surprise was a free month sub to their Writer's Room group. I don't remember the link, sorry.
Couldn't be more grateful to Anna, Chris Mack at Netflix, and my entire Stage 32 team for what has been one informative and inspiring day. And, of course, entirely grateful to the 26,000 creatives and pros who have signed up for this webcast and the thousands that attended today and brought so much positive energy and phenomenal questions to the proceedings. Much love to you all.
Lisa Isaacson and @Maurice - The surprise was a free month in the Writers' Room.
Amanda Toney - I'm not finding the PDFs of the Story Maps. I'm sure it's user error.

Expand comment@Alastair Swartz "what is the best advice for writing from personal experience? / actual life events" Do it! A few words of advice... Think about the ways in which your life experience is universal. How will people be able to connect with your story? Take a look at the stories of other people in similar situations (line of work, etc.). How are their stories different? Can you incorporate some of the differences into your show so you represent not only yourself but something more universal? And finally the hardest thing - if you create a character based on yourself, that person has to live and breathe on their own. They aren't you. You will receive notes on your script and show that will keep making it better if you are able to let go and see your story as a scripted show, not as a documentary or referendum on you as a human being. Also, if I am working with you and horrid things happen to your character, I don't want to know if it's real! Yikes! It's only fiction, right? Please say it's only fiction! ;)

Expand comment@Bryan Wright "How would you pitch a series of different 60 min films? Example: Black Mirror, Twilight Zone, Amazing Stories?" That is an anthology series. They're becoming popular! They need to have some common threads in terms of genre, themes and tone. The episodes need to be palpably connected, sometimes even by the type of story engine. When you pitch, talk about the overall concept of the series, especially those connecting threads. How do the episodes make up a cohesive whole? Why would an audience want to watch a show about these themes / with this tone? Do all your episodes take place in the same or similar world? Are there narrative devices that are used in all or most episodes? Then pitch 3 - 6 episode ideas (depending on how much time you have). Focus on how they are similar and also how they present different takes on the shared concepts. Pick episode ideas that represent the variety of your stories. Be sure to mention subplots. Hope this helps!

Don't leave it with what seems like an unfinished scene. A lot of times that means a nice reaction beat. Take a look at how Joel's departure is handled in Mrs. Maisel so that the subplot temporarily closes, though obviously the situation is not resolved. Or how Succession leaves each character in a particular place where they can be picked up in the next episode. They don't feel like loose ends, but more like characters left on pause till "next week." Does that make sense?
Thanks for the webinar. Greetings from Los Angeles.

1. General Question about the bite we take from the Seasons or Series story arc in the pilot: Can we get some hint on how to weigh room for showing off the characters vs. showing off what the story engine can do?
This is hard! It depends on the type of show you're writing and the pacing. You really want to establish both your main characters and your story engine. But as to how much story to get through, where to begin and where to end - that is one of the toughest questions in writing your pilot. Try to get a handle on your first season's big milestones and that might help. So will this: arrive when your world is "ripe" for the story to start. The biggest moment in your main character's life, the one event that will forever alter their existence, needs to happen by pg. 20 of your pilot (pilot launch). And its consequences need to lead to another moment later where things have really gone so far that going back is out of the question (series launch). Once you know those, everything else should fall in place.
2.Question about the Midpoint: What do you think about a ticking clock introduced before the midpoint? (I'm thinking of suspense vs. time to show the audience around in the world and give them intimate moments with the characters.)
Don't rush your first act, even if your pacing is fast. Characters first - always. Until we have some sense of your world, we won't understand the story. Until we have some connection to your characters, we won't care about the story. So it's a tradeoff - you want to start the story, but not get too deep too fast. Having said that, I don't know of any rule that says no ticking clock before the midpoint. If it works, it works. Lupin sets up the idea of the ticking clock in Act One (Assane mentions in his plans that they will have 7 minutes). The Expanse sets up a time constraint as stakes in Act One - Miller obviously has only so much time to find Julie in one piece. The longer someone is missing, the worse things get, as we all know from umpteen crime shows.
A master class, truly.

Expand commentI’ve tried various kinds of techniques throughout the years to develop characters organically, yet these techniques tend to make them come out acting rigidly and untrue to how I might have envisioned them in my mind’s eye on an emotional and instinctual level. This is especially true for characters who are wily and highly intelligent, such Chandler Bing, Patrick Verona, and Nick Wilde. How do you suppose writers can overcome writing obstacles like these so that the characters will match and/or exceed our expectations of them without getting bogged down by irrelevant details and world building clichés?
Great session. Quick question Anna. What do you do when you start off writing a 10 part web series. The pilot generates active interest but the feedback also is 'this can be a great two-hour movie'. In such a situation would you recommend pivoting into the new reality or staying the course. Facing the predicament presently.
Hello! I haven’t received the story map. Where can I have access to it? Thanks.
Loved Anna Marton's master class. (webinar)her knowledge, her style , her structure, the clarity and the specifics, and the comms . Your presentation served me well in evaluating my own scripts, see the areas of opportunity, evaluate them overall. For me it was a very good exercise in that way. I will see this webinar every time I finish a script next year and I am currently working in one.

Expand comment@Melissa Spearman "How do you suppose writers can overcome writing obstacles like these so that the characters will match and/or exceed our expectations of them without getting bogged down by irrelevant details and world building clichés?"
Please ask easier questions! ;) Character development is just difficult and requires a lot of trial and error and practice. I don't know what techniques you've tried, but there is really not one magic formula. I've got some techniques that might help or are at least worth trying (I go into these a lot more deeply in my labs). First, really, really get to know your characters. Know them like you know your life partner or best friend. Do character development outside your script - if I give you the assignment to write a character description of no more than one page, you should complain that it's not enough space. Goals, motivations, plans, flaws, fears, backstory, relationships, moral compass, attitudes, habits, surroundings, etc. etc. Make them take personality tests. I love the 36 Questions That Lead to Love, and the Colbert Questionnert, among many others. Create a dating profile for them. Set up their insta, complete with pictures and song picks (yes, even for a historical character). Then set it all aside. Don't push or force, just let the character talk. Let them do stuff. Don't try to hold so tightly and control everything. Don't try to make them sound "smart" or "emotional" - just let them be, because by now they live inside you, dying to get out. And don't tell the audience anything they don't need to know right at that moment in the script. Leave something for your pitch. If this ends up helping, will you please let me know?
Wow! Such a Master ! I love the character building suggestions!

If it were a movie, would they be interested in developing / producing / financing it? (Because if yes, then maybe you do pivot to work with them). When I tell a writer their concept would make a better film than TV show, there are usually one or more out of three reasons: 1. The concept hinges on a "quest," a conflict that is inherently resolvable, where there is a definite end to "they will either accomplish this goal or not." That's at most a mini-series. 2. The world is inherently tiny with few characters and storylines possible. 2. There are no subplots nor can I think of any. If one of these holds true to your project, then you can either change it to make it more suitable for a series or make it into a movie.
@Anna Marton Henry Thank you for your inputs. Will certainly keep that in mind moving forward.
