P. James Norris

What is the term Ms. Cohan is using to describe the pilot where you start in the middle of the action?

Horror/Thriller, Agnieszka Baczkowska-Maśluszczak. A Sci-Fi Plant Horror sounds interesting.

Hariharan Thavanirupan

Watching from Sri Lanka, this webinars great!

Dawn Sellers

I think good dialogue is natural but not cliche. How a character converses shows who they are.

Sajani Fernando

Hi, I'm writing a script about the journey of a boy who becomes a feared villain. And he is challenged by his childhood best friend emotionally and through action as well because his friend disagrees with how he thinks.

Sajani Fernando

Any thoughts or ideas about it?

Phiwa Sukumane

@Summer Rona Dialogue must move the story 4ward, Characters must sound diff, must not be repeatitive, must not be realistic - not kitchen sink, no backstory in it. Lastly - no, 'good mornings'

Theodor Inelus

Research is extremely important. Ive prepared a year and a half for a feature lenght script I wrote.

Regarding relationships of the characters, I agree that all characters should have some type of relationship with all the characters of the show, but why is so important that male/female leads of a show have to have a sexual relationship/tension? Example: Benson/Stabler.

Agreed Vikki Harris ! Relationship dynamics are so, SO important to creating multi-faceted characters. To your point, I really enjoy female characters that have a camaraderie with a male character without it becoming romantic (e.g. Zoey and Mal in Firefly).

Interestingly, I remember reading about how Vince Gilligan and the team wrote Breaking Bad- allegedly, in the last season, they didn't always know how they were going to incorporate the machine gun at the end. They thought it was cool, then had to figure out how to make it pay off in the end.

Sajani Fernando

The characters and their relationships with each other evolve but the endgame is that the villain gains power in the end.

Sajani Fernando

Is anyone interested? Any thoughts or ideas about it?

Daniel Velasco Cajias

LOST suffered from the network's mandate to stretch its run longer than the writer's original plan. So they had to divert from character and burn through plot. By the time the ending came, the audience was a mix of early Lost fans (character driven) and late Lost fans (plot driven) and of course, the end is what the writers hoped it would be in the beginning, so the late fans felt "betrayed" by the character driven ending.

Maurice Vaughan

Sajani, I think it would be great as a show. You will have more time to explore the characters, themes, etc. if it's a show.

Sajani Fernando

Maurice Vaughan the friend fails to stop the villain who becomes more powerful than anyone thought he could be. The ending is that the villain gains power but after the friend dies knowing that he failed their friendship but fighting against the villain.

Sajani Fernando

Anyone who wants to work on this with me, let me know! It would be so fun!

The show is in Beth's POV. A month ago, Beth sees Erica being so mean to Keira but never knows why. Because of this, Erica becomes the main suspect. Everyone believes it to be her. By the end of the pilot, a huge evidence will be revealed that points to Erica. For the next episodes, even when Beth t...

I had to leave early yesterday but was just able to catch up by watching the replay. Such a great webinar with helpful information as I am polishing a couple of drama pilots to submit for labs and fellowships. Thank you!

Leila Cohan

@d'anthony johnson I use Final Draft for writing my scripts and Writer's Room Pro for boarding them.

Leila Cohan

@h-d messias I like to start with just a logline, then expand out to the characters, and then start thinking about the pilot. Good luck!

Leila Cohan

@phiwa sukumane Not every story is going to have happy vibes - do what's organic to your story!

Leila Cohan

@Vikki Harris, I don't think male/female leads have to have sexual tension - look at Don and Peggy on Mad Men! That being said, it's an easy source of conflict/story.

Leila Cohan

@Donald Jacobs I have not, but I pitched an interactive show - they're tough sells, but so cool!

Leila Cohan

@yasila cabrejos I think the characters can still have feminist viewpoints and goals while operating within the strictures of society at the time.

Leila Cohan

@alistair shwartz It depends on the structure of the story! Closed-ended is better for film, open-ended is better for TV.

Leila Cohan

@fawaz azim There are a lot of ways, from breaking in as a writers assistant to developing a reputation as another kind of writer. But basically, I like the Steve Martin saying of "be so good, they can't ignore you."

Leila Cohan

@katherine king No need to add act breaks for streaming!

Leila Cohan

@sajani fernando You definitely need an author's permission to use ANY of their work! And I think any plot twist that provides a genuine surprise is an effective one!

Leila Cohan

For those asking about directing your show, it's definitely possible, but unless you're very established as a director, likely won't happen until the show is a success.

Leila Cohan

@isabelle doucette My current room is still on Zoom but more and more are returning to in person - really depends on the showrunner's preference!

Leila Cohan

@kristen kuhns That's unlikely for a project you wrote the pilot for but very possible if you're the author of a book etc. that's adapted for tv.

Leila Cohan

@samuel tracton The fellowships and certain script contests like Austin Film Festival are great for that! Also calling in favors.

Maurice Vaughan

Thanks for answering the questions, Leila. I like that saying by Steve Martin. Have a great, creative week!

Chester Damian

Hello, I have a question: Is Netflix interested in TV Show Ideas without a Script of the pilot? I'm not a screenwriter, I'm a composer/sound designer based in LA. I think I have several good ideas for TV shows and I'm developing them in order to have a Pitch document of about 10 pages to present (thanks to Chris's webinar!) but I don't have a script for the pilot. Thanks in advance for your answer. Claudio

Laurie Ashbourne

What she's saying about shooting the different set ups is so crucial to understand. Screenwriters have to understand what it takes to get what's on the page on the screen. "Coverage" as it's called can radically change the pace of the story and the production.

Hello everyone!!! As a screenwriter l have several scripts that I would like to work with Netflix. Maybe they will take me into account and give me the opportunity. Sorry for this.

Karen "Kay" Ross

@Mohamed ZE - I don't believe there is a certificate, no, since there is no test to confirm your retention. But I would suggest confirming with Kristin, our education coordinator at edu@stage32.com Great question!

Marion N. Toro

I wonder if Jeanette enjoyed "Sense 8" because of their many locations?

Karen "Kay" Ross

Melissa Zbozny

QUESTION: For the water shots that Jeanette is talking about, could special effects be an option if rewriting the scene changes the story's plot? When do you consider special effects when the budget is concerned?

Really grateful to Stage32 and Netflix for these webinars, thank you to all involved. What Jeanette is saying might seem obvious yet this is the first time I'm being forced to think about all these different elements. Vielen Dank Jeanette. This has been very interesting so far. Just curious if you know what specific budget concessions were made for THE BOYS? It’s been a while since I watched it, but it seems to break all the great advice you’ve been giving i.e. it has a HUGE cast, multiple locations, animals, children and of course is very VFX and stunt heavy.

HI Jeanette. My team and I are working on two series (one is dramatic, the other is a comedy) that we'd like to pitch to Netflix. Tell me what do you think about, I think the level of the script of the TV show is getting better from the last 10/15 years otherwise the level of the script of the movies is getting worse. Am I wrong?

QUESTION: How or where in the spec script do you explain to the producer that you know the main location very well (a small town) and you know the whole community will support the shooting of all the episodes? Also, the main Canadian location saves a US company 25% due to the currency difference, and there are other incentives from the provincial government. ~ Thank you for this informative seminar, Jeanette.

Jean-Marc Vallee - who sadly passed away recently - used to say that the first thing he always had to fight for was money for music. When, if at all, do producers bend to the creative demands of the filmmakers? (Smiley face.) (I hail from Cape Town, South Africa.)

As a writer, if I don't plan on selling my show, what elements should I have that would make it valuable to a streamer or broadcaster? Alejandra Perdomo

Should we also consider in the writing process COVID protocoles for the creation of our scripts ?

Karen "Kay" Ross

Yep - cheaper to shoot on a live location, but you have less control over the variables. More expensive to shoot in a studio, but you can control a lot of the variables that can disturb your ability to make your days. Great question, and thank you for the answers, Jeanette!

How did the German writers - the ones you dragged kicking and screaming to the US - respond to writing in a 'Hollywood' style? First thank you for your time and sharing of info. After watching Sean Bean's new series TIME produced by BBC Studios which was only three episodes, so I'm wondering if there is a minimum for the number of episodes that would be needed by a broadcaster?

Karen "Kay" Ross

I'm not sure about that, @Erica Land, but it couldn't hurt to ask. Jason would be the one who would know: J.Mirch@stage32.com

Hi Jeanette. I’m busy with a novel and I’m in my final stages of writing. My goal is to have it converted into a series. The story is similar to Acrimony with a bit of a South African local flavour. Government does give money for locally produced movies. There are some scenes that might need to be shot in Europe but I’d like to connect with you so we can see if this is something that might be of interest to you.

Nancy Frazen

Thank you soooooooo much! So informative and helpful.

Kathi Carey

Good question, Nikki! I'd like to know the answer to that, too!

Is there any benefit in hiding what a pitch is about? Like pretending an 'educational' marketplace is a 'social media platform'?

Great advice about taking a "no" as a learning opportunity.

So agree great webinar and seeing women in these positions of power. Thank you Jeanette for sharing your knowledge.

@Amy Maki I don't think the fantasy genre has to be avoided, it just needs to be a little more savvy. I'm thinking of Ladyhawke: very few special effects (even though "magic" is involved) and the climax of the story occurs without any visual effects, giving so much more weight to the scene.

Melissa Spearman

Thank you for the wonderful presentation Jeanette! I really admire you work, and I cannot wait to check out the extra content that will come with the presentation's recording!

Nikila Nikki Cole

Hi Kathi! Good to see you. I get different answers from different people on this, so am curious to hear what Jeanette says is her preference.

The opening to my TV pilot has a flight of dragons. This is scene is integral to showing who the character. I am quite sure that a producer will see this scene and think of costs. Is there a way to allay their fears. Should I have an idea of how the scene could be shot? It is the only scene with dragons.

Really great presentation! Can't wait for it to be available on-demand, so I can rewatch and really take note on some things.

Jeanette B. Milio

Hi everyone, it was an absolute pleasure to do the seminar this morning. I’m glad you guys enjoy it. I will now make my way through the questions and answer them as soon as possible of course. :)

Jeanette B. Milio

@MartinReese -Not to worry. You will not scare away a producer with a scene of fighting dragons, if the scene does what you say and is important to your concept. You could ( don’t have to) check in with a VFX company and see what they would charge to put the scene together. May be interesting to find out what it costs entail.

Thanks, Jeanette. Actually the dragons aren't fighting they're just flying overhead like birds (a flight of dragons is equivalent to a flock of birds) But I get what you're saying. I do know a couple of VFX folks. It might be helpful to at least have an idea of how it impacts the budget.

Ces Matic Bagtas

@jeanette Thank you so much for the opportunity and for the warm welcome :)

was it only a one day thing?

Jeanette B. Milio

@FahadAldajani - impressed by your German language skills. I'm glad you enjoyed the presentation. @JamesRussel: The projects sounds amazing. Cast should be excited to play these roles. Are you able to (maybe talk to your investors to back) make proper pay-or-play offers? That is likely going to be n...

@CindyHammel - my personal favorites (most ideal for me - again other producers may have other opinions about this) include German, Belgian, UK, South Africa, Spain, Canada, Australia, and Malta (and Puerto Rico, New Mexico, Georgia .. in the U.S.). @MiguelGomez - a 200 page bible is a lot. WOW. Not...

@BelindaA.Allen - Great question and I assume you are referring to "block-shooting". I personally encourage it, because it can save a lot of time and money to shoot all the season scenes in one location, then shoot the next block of season scenes in the next location and so forth. That said, you nee...

@PierreVanSchalkwyk - it would be bad form (and potentially illegal) to shop your project around without your written authorization. I can't speak for everyone, but in my experience, most professional producers would discuss an option with you first, before sharing your idea with anyone. @ElyjahMerc...

@Jorge Ortiz - I personally love including brands in my shows (that's a part of my finance plan in fact and helps me reduce the risk for my investors), but one has to be careful in not "plastering" brands all over the screen, because it could hinder international distribution, due to local TV (and o...

@Denise Crisci - it depends on what it is. We are currently working on a concept that is based on a book series, and we are starting from scratch - so to speak. That said, ideally, I'd like to see a bible and pilot script, and thoughts on show runners, when something is sent to me. @Amita Sarin - it...

@Melanie Arden - I would say that is a Chris question :). @Val Chidiac - I would say it's a personal preference, and I can share that as a producer I benefitted from studying screenplay writing. @Mark Morris - given this seminar was geared toward writers, I focused on that -for the most part - and d...

@Amy Mäki - I would consider "Game Of Thrones" fantasy - it worked well I'd say. I don't think fantasy is a genre to avoid. I do think it can help if its based on an existing IP, but a strong concept can also be of interest to a buyer. @Victoria A.C.Quin-Harkin - if all your characters are essential for the story and concept, and they do not have similar / overlapping traits, then you don't eliminate any.
