Hello, I have a question: Is Netflix interested in TV Show Ideas without a Script of the pilot? I'm not a screenwriter, I'm a composer/sound designer based in LA. What she's saying about shooting the different set ups is so crucial to understand. Screenwriters have to understand what it takes to get what's on the page on the screen. "Coverage" as it's called can radically change the pace of the story and the production.

I have to say, this is really helping in character creation and development, an area where I have been having some difficulty in. Plus the added benefit of this helping keep costs to a minimum is incredible.

Vielen Dank Jeanette. This has been very interesting so far. Just curious if you know what specific budget concessions were made for THE BOYS? It’s been a while since I watched it, but it seems to break all the great advice you’ve been giving i.e. it has a HUGE cast, multiple locations, animals, children and of course is very VFX and stunt heavy.
Question for Jeanette: Will a producer typically pass on a script after the first read based on its budget? In other words, will they typically give you a chance to make changes before passing?

how about war scenes, crowd scenes and historic scenes? Is it ever okay to insert archival footage instead of recreating those scenes? I am talking about a narrative film, or tv series, not a documentary?

QUESTION: How does it work now with series and music, many shows use a song per episode, as clip at the end... Known songs in nice versions (acoustic or so) Are those, arrangements with music producers and the production company? Can the writer propose such songs and the producer sees how on earth to handle fees ... Thats a thing we don't have the possibility here in Colombia, thats why I ask...

Yep - cheaper to shoot on a live location, but you have less control over the variables. More expensive to shoot in a studio, but you can control a lot of the variables that can disturb your ability to make your days. Great question, and thank you for the answers, Jeanette!
How did the German writers - the ones you dragged kicking and screaming to the US - respond to writing in a 'Hollywood' style? Were there fears that they would lose their authentic German-ness, for want of a better term? (Smiley face.) (Here in South Africa we at one stage in our history got to see a whole lot of German series.)

How do I make sure, that my idea is not shared and used without my knowledge? As well how do I approach a producer? Is it a case of calling and making an appointment for a presentation.
Question: When several locations are necessary, is it usually practical to shoot all scenes for multiple episodes during one time at the location if seasonal aspects are not important?
I'm from Cape Town, South Africa, where parts of 'Dark Tide' was shot. (And my apologies for your security issues.) But considering your inflated security bill, what still made it worth your while to film in countries like SA where you assume you can stretch a US dollar? (Although I'm assuming the animatronic shark never came here as that was filmed in Pinewood Studios in the UK.)

Hi Jeanette. I’m busy with a novel and I’m in my final stages of writing. My goal is to have it converted into a series. The story is similar to Acrimony with a bit of a South African local flavour. Government does give money for locally produced movies. There are some scenes that might need to be shot in Europe but I’d like to connect with you so we can see if this is something that might be of interest to you.

@Amy Maki I don't think the fantasy genre has to be avoided, it just needs to be a little more savvy. I'm thinking of Ladyhawke: very few special effects (even though "magic" is involved) and the climax of the story occurs without any visual effects, giving so much more weight to the scene.

The opening to my TV pilot has a flight of dragons. This is scene is integral to showing who the character. I am quite sure that a producer will see this scene and think of costs. Is there a way to allay their fears. Should I have an idea of how the scene could be shot? It is the only scene with dragons.

@MartinReese -Not to worry. You will not scare away a producer with a scene of fighting dragons, if the scene does what you say and is important to your concept. You could ( don’t have to) check in with a VFX company and see what they would charge to put the scene together. May be interesting to find out what it costs entail.

@Amy Mäki - I would consider "Game Of Thrones" fantasy - it worked well I'd say. I don't think fantasy is a genre to avoid. I do think it can help if its based on an existing IP, but a strong concept can also be of interest to a buyer. @Victoria A.C.Quin-Harkin - if all your characters are essential for the story and concept, and they do not have similar / overlapping traits, then you don't eliminate any.

I watched Stage32 webinars (Write comedy/Sci Fi, pilot story structure). Now I see all the story concepts in Scorpion TV series. Awe-some!
What is the term Ms. Cohan is using to describe the pilot where you start in the middle of the action?

I think good dialogue is natural but not cliche. How a character converses shows who they are.
Hi, I'm writing a script about the journey of a boy who becomes a feared villain. And he is challenged by his childhood best friend emotionally and through action as well because his friend disagrees with how he thinks.

D'Anthony, I use Microsoft Word to develop my scripts. I've heard that Prewrite is great for developing scripts. https://prewrite.com/
I use Final Draft 12 to write my scripts. WriterDuet is my backup screenwriting software. WriterDuet is cheaper, but I find Final Draft 12 a lot more useful.

Regarding relationships of the characters, I agree that all characters should have some type of relationship with all the characters of the show, but why is so important that male/female leads of a show have to have a sexual relationship/tension? Example: Benson/Stabler.

Basically, my villain doesn't start out as a villain but he grows to believe that in the fictional world certain people are lesser than him and therefore should not exist whereas his friend who is raised in a family with similar beliefs challenges his friend and tries to make him see that he is wrong. That they all are equal. But the villain only is blinded in pursuit of power and becomes a fanatic. In the end, the villain wages a war against those who he believes to be lesser, and his friend works against him.

Interestingly, I remember reading about how Vince Gilligan and the team wrote Breaking Bad- allegedly, in the last season, they didn't always know how they were going to incorporate the machine gun at the end. They thought it was cool, then had to figure out how to make it pay off in the end.
The characters and their relationships with each other evolve but the endgame is that the villain gains power in the end.

LOST suffered from the network's mandate to stretch its run longer than the writer's original plan. So they had to divert from character and burn through plot. By the time the ending came, the audience was a mix of early Lost fans (character driven) and late Lost fans (plot driven) and of course, the end is what the writers hoped it would be in the beginning, so the late fans felt "betrayed" by the character driven ending.
Sajani, I think it would be great as a show. You will have more time to explore the characters, themes, etc. if it's a show.
Maurice Vaughan the friend fails to stop the villain who becomes more powerful than anyone thought he could be. The ending is that the villain gains power but after the friend dies knowing that he failed their friendship but fighting against the villain.

Jason orphaned and alone always knew he was different because of his magical powers. Ralph was born to the most powerful magical family believing in great purity, always wanted to truly belong to someone, somewhere without judgment, and do something right with his life. When the two of them meet each other at school, they become inseparable and fall into an easy friendship over shared textbooks and hot cups of tea. As they grow up, cracks begin to surface in their perfect friendship as Jason begins to be attracted to lure of dark magical power that can kill the lesser powerful magical beings and Ralph tries to break out of his family's maniac beliefs and make his friend see the light. Both of them disagree on their political beliefs and finally, the crack in the glass becomes the breaking point. Jason leaves Ralph's friendship without remorse gathering followers for a war against lesser magical powerful beings and Ralph joins those who fight against Jason hoping to find something to stop him but in the end, Jason's power prevails as the war to end all wars begins and Ralph dies knowing that he has failed. Ralph shows no remorse for his actions.

In the beginning Xani is just an incident businessman who helps run the gym. But eventually we find out he is a former hitman.
I mean, kira is killed by either Erica or Xavier because she knows something she isn't meant to know

Which characters may benefit from Keira's death?
A malevolent spirit that followed and killed Keira due to a family coverup. Beth becomes a suspect due to her ties to the family that Keira hid secrets from.
Establish that all characters had motives for killing Kira. Maybe she was having an affair with Avi. Perhaps Erica was selling steroids and Kira found out.

What is the level of Beths newness to the type of work or to the area. Each one a suspect it could be a case of Xavi exercising his 2 face nature, knowing that Erica has a past it is easier for him to escape his wife by framing her over something she is technically involved in as the boss of Erica.

Jason was on the verge of being thrown out of the orphanage when the cult leader recruits him and to test his loyalty - asks Jason to cast a spell to open a tomb rumored to house a mummy from Aztec that can grant its power to a strong magician.
He meets Ralph when they cast spells to win quarters at the local arcade pinball machine. They are caught and arrested when Ralph's father bails them both from jail (Now Jason owes Henry) etc etc.
So resolve issues such as " always wanted to truly belong to someone, somewhere without judgment" - present all such ideas in story form with emotional stakes. EXAMPLE - Ralph - an adopted child is always kept out of family meetings discussing the legend of the family magic...etc etc etc
This - "gathering followers for a war against lesser magical powerful beings" becomes - Jason hypnotises the cultists and they follow him and he sends them to hypnotise bank employess in robbery to fund Jason's plot to take over the world.
Add emotional stakes to your story.
Maybe different characters get picked off but it's not any of the spin clients.
Maybe pickef off not in studio
What if one of the characters is turned into a police informant? Maybe Xavi since he is married to Erica.

What if another person connected to Beth and Erica or Kira dies and season 1 is all about finding the connection
Keira was using an ALIAS, so we have to discover her real name and identity
Kira is Xavi's daughter and Beth's sister which is why she came to the studio in the first place. She wants to find out what happened.

Maybe the murder leads to a wider conspiracy about a chain of gyms that double as cults. Maybe the bikes are used in a satanic ritual that the people are unaware they are participating in
Keira is really an alien who goes from body to body until they are not needed anymore
Beth is an illusion made up by Erica and Xavi knows that and plays with Erica's mind so he get what he wants from her.

@d'anthony johnson I use Final Draft for writing my scripts and Writer's Room Pro for boarding them.
@h-d messias I like to start with just a logline, then expand out to the characters, and then start thinking about the pilot. Good luck!
@phiwa sukumane Not every story is going to have happy vibes - do what's organic to your story!
@Vikki Harris, I don't think male/female leads have to have sexual tension - look at Don and Peggy on Mad Men! That being said, it's an easy source of conflict/story.
@Donald Jacobs I have not, but I pitched an interactive show - they're tough sells, but so cool!
@yasila cabrejos I think the characters can still have feminist viewpoints and goals while operating within the strictures of society at the time.
@alistair shwartz It depends on the structure of the story! Closed-ended is better for film, open-ended is better for TV.
@fawaz azim There are a lot of ways, from breaking in as a writers assistant to developing a reputation as another kind of writer. But basically, I like the Steve Martin saying of "be so good, they can't ignore you."
@katherine king No need to add act breaks for streaming!
@sajani fernando You definitely need an author's permission to use ANY of their work! And I think any plot twist that provides a genuine surprise is an effective one!
For those asking about directing your show, it's definitely possible, but unless you're very established as a director, likely won't happen until the show is a success.
@isabelle doucette My current room is still on Zoom but more and more are returning to in person - really depends on the showrunner's preference!
@kristen kuhns That's unlikely for a project you wrote the pilot for but very possible if you're the author of a book etc. that's adapted for tv.
@samuel tracton The fellowships and certain script contests like Austin Film Festival are great for that! Also calling in favors.
